Hymenolepis diminuta: ultrastructural abnormalities in worms from C57 mice.

Ultrastructural studies, including stereological analyses of micrographs, have been made of five-worm primary infections of Hymenolepis diminuta from C57 mice to determine whether the immune destrobilation/rejection process was accompanied by significant changes in the fine structure of the scolex tegument. Destrobilation/rejection of worms occurred from Days 9-12 after infection. For the first 5 days after infection, the scolex tegument showed no detectable differences in ultrastructure compared with that of "control" worms from either Wistar rats or immunosuppressed C57 mice. By Day 6, large…

Immunological memory in mice to adult Hymenolepis diminuta (Cestoda).

Following a primary infection with Hymenolepsis diminuta mice were found to be strongly resistant to a challenge infection over a period of eight months. Challenge was by three cysticercoids administered orally, or by inserting into the duodenum one 7-day-old strobilate worm recovered from a donor mouse. Autopsy of immunized mice 6, 8, and 9 days after challenge showed that challenge worms established but that, with few exceptions, only shunted or destrobilated worms remained. Autopsy of recently immunized mice, at daily intervals following challenge, confirmed that transplanted worms establis

Human infection with Hymenolepis diminuta: case report from Spain.

We report a case of Hymenolepis diminuta infection in a human. The patient was a 5-year-old girl referred to us through the onset of a cyanotic attack. Treatment with a single dose (10 mg/kg of body weight) of praziquantel was ineffective, but the parasite was eradicated after three treatment cycles with the same drug at dosages of 25 mg/kg/day for 5 days.

Thymus dependence of tapeworm (Hymenolepis diminuta) elimination from mice.

Although normal mice eliminated the lumen-dwelling intestinal cestode Hymenolepis diminuta by day 21 post-cysticercoid inoculation, congenitally thymus-deficient (nude) mice maintained their work burdens. Nude mice grafted with thymus glands or injected with thymus cells eliminated their worms.

Concurrent infections of the trematode Echinostoma caproni and the tapeworms Hymenolepis diminuta and Hymenolepis microstoma in mice.

Superimposing the intestinal tapeworm Hymenolepis diminuta on an established infection with the trematode Echinostoma caproni or simultaneous infection of mice with H. diminuta and Hymenolepis microstoma caused destrobilation and expulsion of H. diminuta, whereas establishment and growth of H. microstoma under the same infection regimes were not affected. In contrast, simultaneous superimposition of H. diminuta and H. microstoma on an established E. caproni infection caused destrobilation and expulsion of both H. diminuta and H. microstoma.

VOLATILES IN FECES OF RATS INFECTED WITH THE TAPEWORM HYMENOLEPIS DIMINUTA.

It has been known for over 25 yr that feces from rats infected with the tapeworm Hymenolepis diminuta are more attractive to tenebrionid beetle intermediate hosts than feces from uninfected rats. Although it has been demonstrated that a volatile chemical (or chemicals) in infected rat feces attracts the intermediate host Tribolium confusum, the volatile chemical(s) have never been identified. This study aimed to identify and compare the volatiles in the feces of rats before and after infection with H. diminuta. Four 8-wk-old female Sprague Dawley rats were infected with H. diminuta. Fecal samp…

[Hymenolepis diminuta infection in an adult's lung: a case report].

Hymenolepis diminuta is a common parasite of rats and mice, but is very rare in humans with cases reported from various parts of the world. Here, we reported a case of Hymenolepis diminuta infection involving both the respiratory and digestive tracts in a 49-year-old male patient whose initial imaging and symptoms were strikingly similar to pneumonia. Since no disease-causing pathogens were found during routine examinations, we considered respiratory infection by specific pathogens before metagenomic next-generation sequencing of broncho-alveolar lavage fluid confirmed the diagnosis of Hymenol…

A case of Hymenolepis diminuta in a young male from Odisha.

Hymenolepis diminuta also known as rat tapeworm rarely causes hymenolepiasis in humans. We report a case of H. diminuta infection in an 18-year-old male farmer who presented with intermittent pruritic maculopaular rashes and dull aching left iliac fossa pain for 6 months. Patient was cured with 2 doses of praziquantel 20 mg/kg on day 0 and 7.

[Establishment of Hymenolepis diminuta-animal model and morphology of cysticercoid].

AIM: To observe the morphological changes in the process of the development of Hymenolepis diminuta. METHODS: The life cycle of Hymenolepis diminuta was established between Rattus domesticus albus and Triboliun castaneum. The morphology of cysticercoid were observed microscopically, and the ultrastructure of the body surface of cysticercoid were observed by scanning electron microscopy. RESULTS: Three phases including the mature stage, the blister stage and the protective outer membrane-forming stage during the growing course of cysticercoid were observed microscopically. Under scanning elec…

Behavioural adaptation of the tapeworm Hymenolepis diminuta to its environment.

Hymenolepis diminuta migrates up the small intestine in response to feeding the host 1 g of glucose. Locomotion during migration may result from fixed patterns of retrograde peristaltic-like waves in the strobila of the tapeworm which propel the organism against the normal expulsive forces in the small intestine. The peristaltic-like locomotory waves occur in a gradient along the strobila with a frequency of 24.9 +/- 0.9 cycles/min in the anterior segments of the worm, decreasing linearly to 6.6 +/- 1.4 cycles/min in the posterior segments of the worm. Chemical signals, isolated from the small…

Host age and the growth and fecundity of Hymenolepis diminuta in the rat.

Five, 20, and 80 cysticercoid infections of Hymenolepis diminuta were established in 1-, 2- and 5-month-old male Wistar rats. Worm numbers, dry weights and egg outputs were determined on day 28 post infection. Worm recovery was found to be independent of cysticercoid dose in 1-month-old rats, but density-dependent in older rats. Density dependence affected both worm dry weight and egg production in all 3 age classes of host studied. However, at the highest dose both dry weight and egg production were significantly decreased in 2- and 5-month-old rats compared with 1-month-old rats. The results…

Study of the effects of insulin on the migration of Hymenolepis diminuta in rats.

The effects of insulin on worm (Hymenolepis diminuta) migration was studied. Insulin injection (20 U/kg, s.c.) significantly increased gastric acid output but did not affect the serotonin content of blood, intestinal lumen or worms. The drug produced, dose-dependently, posteriad migration of the worms in rats without pylorus-ligation but ligation of the pylorus prevented this migration. It is concluded that the hypersecretion of gastric acid induced by insulin is responsible for the posteriad migration of H. diminuta in rats.

Hymenolepis diminuta: effects of amoscanate on energy metabolism and ultrastructure.

Amoscanate possesses chemotherapeutic activity against schistosomes, and in higher doses against many other helminths including filariids and Hymenolepis diminuta. The primary mode of action of this compound is unknown. Effects of the drug on the carbohydrate metabolism as well as on the tegumental and nephridial epithelia of H. diminuta were examined. At various time intervals after administration of the drug to rats infected with H. diminuta, the parasites were recovered and incubated in glucose-salts medium for 90 min. Chemotherapy resulted in decreases in succinate, lactate, and acetate re…

Transplantation of Hymenolepis diminuta into naive, immune and irradiated mice.

Almost 100% of 7- to 10-day-old Hymenolepis diminuta became established when surgically transplanted from donor mice into the duodenum of naive recipient mice. Transplanted tapeworms survived 8-12 days, by which time they had survived much longer in total than they would have done in the donor. Mice previously immunized by a primary infection rejected transplants within 4 days. Sub-lethal irradiation (550 rad) delayed rejection by immune mice but such mice still rejected worms much more quickly than did naive mice. Surgery was shown to delay by 2-3 days the rejection of worms by naive mice, an…
