Comparative enzymology of venoms from stinging Hymenoptera.

Venoms from 20 species of stinging Hymenoptera, including nine species of ants and nine species of social wasps, were quantitatively analyzed for the following enzymic activities: phospholipase A, hyaluronidase, lipase, esterase, protease, acid phosphatase, alkaline phosphatase and phosphodiesterase. Phospholipase and hyaluronidase were present in all the venoms, with activity levels generally higher among the wasps than the ants (P less than 0.05). Lipase was present in high activity in several social wasp venoms and one ant venom, in low levels in two other ant venoms and absent from four te

Assessment of Hymenoptera and Non-Hymenoptera Insect Bite and Sting Allergy Among Patients of Tropical Region of West Bengal, India.

West Bengal, India, is inhabited by abundance and variety of insects that triggers sensitization in some humans to inhalant allergens and/or insect stings/venoms. Lack of research on this topic prevented accurate diagnosis and proper follow-up treatments to patients suffering from insect-induced allergies. The aim of our study was to identify the allergy-causing insects and evaluate resulting sensitization among a study population in West Bengal, India. The skin prick test (SPT) evaluated sensitivity of 450 patients who sought treatment at the Allergy and Asthma Research Center from July 2017

Melittobia acasta (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) female longevity and life stage-dependent parasitism using commercially managed Megachile rotundata (Hymenoptera: Megachilidae) as hosts.

Melittobia acasta Walker is one among other hymenopterous parasitoids of Megachile rotundata F. Commercial M. rotundata populations are employed to pollinate North American alfalfa for seed production. This wasp can be prolific when using M. rotundata as a host and can reduce or destroy bee stocks. Hundreds of M. acasta female offspring can develop in a single M. rotundata cell and disperse to infest other cells, producing thousands of more parasitoids. In this study, we determined (i) upon what bee life stages M. acasta females choose to lay eggs and if those eggs ultimately become adults and

Immunotherapy and biologicals for the treatment of allergy to Hymenoptera stings.

Introduction: Venom immunotherapy (VIT) is an effective treatment for Hymenoptera venom allergy. The occurrence of severe reactions (SRs) to VIT, although infrequent, hampers the achievement of tolerance to insect stings. Risk factors for such reactions include allergy to honeybee venom, concomitant mast cell disorders, and the build-up phase of VIT. A role for omalizumab has come forward in recent years. Areas covered: This article reviews the available literature on the efficacy of omalizumab in preventing SRs and allowing the attainment of VIT maintenance doses. Pre- and co-treatments with

Hymenoptera Anaphylaxis as a Clonal Mast Cell Disorder.

Up to 7% of adult patients with Hymenoptera venom allergy may suffer from a clonal mast cell disease. Patients with clonal mast cell disease and Hymenoptera venom anaphylaxis are commonly males, without skin lesions, and anaphylaxis is characterized by hypotension and syncope in the absence of urticaria and angioedema. A normal value of tryptase does not exclude a mastocytosis. The diagnosis of a mast cell disease leads to several therapeutic consequences concerning the treatment of Hymenoptera venom allergy as matter of fact these patients have to undergo long-life venom immunotherapy, to pre

Key Issues in Hymenoptera Venom Allergy: An Update.

In this review, the Hymenoptera Allergy Committee of the SEAIC analyzes the most recent scientific literature addressing problems related to the diagnosis of hymenoptera allergy and to management of venom immunotherapy. Molecular diagnosis and molecular risk profiles are the key areas addressed. The appearance of new species of hymenoptera that are potentially allergenic in Spain and the associated diagnostic and therapeutic problems are also described. Finally, we analyze the issue of mast cell activation syndrome closely related to hymenoptera allergy, which has become a new diagnostic chall

Massive hymenoptera envenomation in a 3-year-old.

BACKGROUND: Envenomation by a large number of hymenopterans can cause significant morbidity and mortality due to venom load. We present the first case of massive Hymenoptera envenomation by native US Hymenoptera. CASE: A 3-year-old boy and his family were hiking in Oregon and were attacked by yellow jackets. On emergency department arrival, the child was uncomfortable and vomiting. Vital signs were normal; physical examination showed more than 90 punctate lesions on the head and neck, and 30 below the neck without urticaria. Initial laboratory values were normal except for a white blood cell

A case of anaphylaxis: horse-fly or hymenoptera sting?

In literature it has been described a high risk of systemic reaction after blood-sucking Dyptera bites, like mosquitoes and horsefly, in people sensitive to hymenoptera. A 51 year old man, allergic to hymenoptera venom and with a history of i.v. reaction after Mueller, who has been treated with Vespula sp. ITS for the last 3 years, was stung by a yellow, black and green insect on the neck. Five minutes after the bite, he suffered generalized hitching and urticaria, oral cavity and lower limbs paresthesia, followed by lost of consciousness. At the Emergency Room he was successfully treated with

Rush hymenoptera venom immunotherapy is efficacious and safe.

BACKGROUND: Although rapid venom immunotherapy (VIT) protocols have been shown to be safe and effective, this issue has not yet been clarified in Turkey. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the side effects of rush VIT as well as early clinical and immunological responses in patients with a venom allergy. METHODS: Eighteen patients who had a history of severe systemic reactions after Hymenoptera sting were included in the study. The diagnosis was made on the basis of positive skin test reactivity and the presence of specific IgE in serum to either bee or vespid venoms. Fourteen

Natural history of Hymenoptera venom sensitivity in adults.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiologic studies of Hymenoptera venom allergy in adults show a prevalence of positive venom skin test results, RASTs of 15% to 25%, or both, but most such individuals have had no systemic reactions to stings. The clinical significance and natural history of this apparently common sensitivity is uncertain. OBJECTIVE: We sought to determine the natural history of venom sensitization by observing the rate of decrease or increase in sensitivity in normal adults over 5 to 10 years. The clinical significance of these findings is related to the frequency of systemic reactions to sti

Comparison of diagnostic tests for hymenoptera sting allergy.

The authors examined correlations among individual Hymenoptera venom skin tests, venom radioallergosorbent tests (RAST), venom-induced leukocyte histamine release (LHR) assays and individual Hymenoptera whole body extract (WBE) skin tests in 37 patients with histories of systemic reactions to Hymenoptera stings. Significant positive correlations were seen between the venom skin test results and results from either the venom RAST or the LHR assay for most venoms. There was a relatively high frequency of positive WBE skin tests in association with other negative tests. The ultimate diagnostic te

The use of the radioallergosorbent test in the diagnosis of Hymenoptera anaphylaxis.

IgE antibody levels to Hymenoptera (honey bee, hornet, wasp or yellow jacket) venom or venom sac were measured in the serum of ninety-six patients with a history of immediate hypersensitivity reactions to these insect stings. Normal levels of IgE antibody were found in fourty-four of these patients tested. The severity of the systemic reaction was similar in those patients with normal and elevated IgE antibody levels, and the interval from the systemic reaction to antibody determination was also similar. In twelve patients with a definite reaction to honey bee venom, the IgE antibody was eleva

Hymenoptera venom-induced anaphylaxis and hereditary alpha-tryptasemia.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To discuss the association between the common dominantly inherited genetic trait hereditary alpha-tryptasemia (HαT) and hymenoptera venom-induced anaphylaxis (HVA). RECENT FINDINGS: Elevated BST has been correlated with more severe systemic anaphylaxis in humans in a number of settings - most notably in HVA. Clonal mast cell disease, in particular, systemic mastocytosis, is frequently associated with elevated BST, and is a major risk factor for severe HVA. However, clonal mast cell diseases are believed to be rare, whereas HVA is relatively more common. HαT affects an estim

Cross-reacting carbohydrate determinants and hymenoptera venom allergy.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Insect venom allergy is an important cause of anaphylaxis. Venom immunotherapy assume the clear identification of the culprit insect, but this is impeded by Immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies to cross reactive carbohydrate determinant (CCD) epitopes of common glycoproteins. Here we give an overview about inducers, importance, and relevance of anti-N-Glycan CCD IgE antibodies. RECENT FINDINGS: Pollen exposure and insect stings induce anti-CCD IgE antibodies interfering with in-vitro tests for allergy diagnosis due to extensive IgE cross-reactivity. Instead of being biological

Mining and engineering of active PB transposons in Hymenoptera.

PiggyBac (PB) transposons, such as the canonical transposon from Trichoplusia ni and the more recently discovered Mage from Lepidoptera, are "cut-and-paste" mobile genetic elements widely harnessed as non-viral vector systems for gene therapy and transgenesis. Despite the ecological and economic significance of the insect order Hymenoptera, the evolutionary history and functional diversity of PB transposons within this group remain largely unexplored. To address this gap, we conducted a systematic investigation of PB transposons across 287 hymenopteran species. Our analysis revealed a widespre

The Mesosoma of Protanilla (Leptanillinae) and the Groundplan of the Formicidae (Hymenoptera).

The study of ant morphology is advancing through parallel insights provided by phylogenomics-which provides a statistically robust basis for comparison and evolutionary inference-and phenomics via the application of microcomputed tomography (µ-CT) for the efficient and precise documentation of anatomy. The information provided by µ-CT is complex and rich, allowing for the quantification of geometry and biomechanically relevant variables, as well as comparative morphology via 3D rendering. Recently, the complete musculature of the thorax, propodeum, and legs was documented for the first time in
