Hyoid bone compression‑induced carotid dissecting aneurysm: A case report.

Bony structures around the carotid artery, such as the styloid process and the hyoid bone, can cause dissection, compression, plaque formation and plaque rupture of the carotid artery. The present study aimed to present a novel case of hyoid bone elongation causing dissecting aneurysm of the carotid artery. However, the patient had no permanent neurologic symptoms. An 80-year-old man presented with right hemiparesis for >5 h despite preventive therapy with antiplatelets and statins. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed acute infarction in the left parietal lobe. Contrast-enhanced computed tomog

Hyoid bone position in subjects with different vertical jaw dysplasias.

OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that there is no difference in hyoid bone position among subjects with different vertical jaw dysplasias. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seventy-one North Indian adult male and female subjects in the age range of 15 to 25 years were selected for the study. Based on the vertical growth pattern of the face, subjects were divided into Group I (n = 24; subjects in whom both Frankfort mandibular plane angle [FMA] and basal plane angle measured 20 to 25 degrees), Group II (n = 17; subjects in whom both FMA and basal plane angle measured <15 degrees), and Group III (n = 30;

Tenderness over the hyoid bone can indicate epiglottitis in adults.

Adult acute epiglottitis is a rare but life-threatening disease caused by obstruction of the airway. The symptoms and signs of this disease may be nonspecific without apparent airway compromise. We encountered 3 consecutive cases of adult patients with this disease in a single 5-month period in one physician's office. In all cases, physical examination revealed tenderness of the anterior neck over the hyoid bone. These observations assisted us in identifying this rare disease quickly. We suggest that tenderness over the hyoid bone should raise suspicion of adult acute epiglottitis.

[Isolated hyoid bone fracture due to blunt trauma: case report].

Fractures of the hyoid bone are very rare. Diagnosis of hyoid fracture is difficult and can be made only with a strong degree of suspicion. We report a case of isolated hyoid bone fracture due to blunt trauma to the neck. A 26-year-old woman was admitted to emergency department for motor vehicle accident. She complained of dysphagia and anterior neck discomfort. Physical examination showed hyperemia and tenderness of neck. A tomographic scan of neck was performed. The findings demonstrated hyoid fracture. Patient was observed with medical therapy for 24 hours and discharged with recommendation

Assessment of Hyoid Bone Movement by Simultaneous Ultrasound and Videofluoroscopic Imaging.

Ultrasound imaging shows promise for bedside tracking of oropharyngeal swallowing structures, but has not been validated against videofluoroscopy. The hyoid bone is readily visible on both ultrasound and fluoroscopy and has multiple muscular attachments involved in execution of swallowing movements. This study aims to validate ultrasound measurements of hyoid motion by quantitatively comparing simultaneously recorded ultrasound and videofluoroscopy data. Participants (N = 23) were recruited from standard-of-care videofluoroscopy studies during which an ultrasound array was positioned submental

Glomus tumor of the hyoid bone: a case report and literature review.

Hyoid glomus tumors represent an exceptionally rare clinical entity. This study details a case presentation of a hyoid glomus tumor accompanied by a comprehensive systematic review, aiming to expand the clinical and pathological understanding of these uncommon neoplasms while evaluating therapeutic approaches. CT imaging revealed hyoid bone destruction with features suggestive of a borderline neoplasm. Histopathological examination demonstrated local spindle-shaped cells exhibiting a chicken claw-like morphology, which showed strong immunoreactivity for SMA, calponin, and collagen type IV - fi

Simple bone cyst of the hyoid: A radiological diagnosis and follow-up.

Simple bone cyst (SBC), also known as unicameral bone cyst, is a benign, fluid-filled cystic lesion that mainly appears in the long bones of young patients. Simple bone cysts are considered dysplastic or reactive lesions of bone. The most common locations for SBCs are the proximal humerus and femur. Lesions may occasionally be found in the jawbones. Simple bone cysts often have no clinical impact and are usually detected during routine radiographic examinations unless a gross pathologic fracture occurs. When symptoms develop, they may include mild pain, local tenderness and swelling. Computed

An isolated hyoid bone fracture caused by blunt trauma to the neck.

Hyoid bone fractures due to blunt trauma are exceedingly rare. Here, we present an isolated hyoid bone fracture caused by blunt trauma as well as a detailed discussion of the injury and treatment options. A 32-year-old male was admitted to emergency department with odynophagia and severe neck pain. He had been hit in the neck with a metal rod during a fight. Computed tomography scan revealed a fracture on hyoid bone and local swelling of adjacent soft tissues. The patient\'s head was elevated, and ice packs were used to reduce the swelling. Diclofenac sodium and prednisolone were administered.

Exceptional localisation of an ectopic parathyroid adenoma at the level of the hyoid bone.

Primary hyperparathyroidism is characterised by high parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels and concomitant hypercalcaemia. Ninety per cent is caused by solitary parathyroid adenomas, 10% by multiple adenomas, hyperplasia and carcinomas. Less than 0.1% of the inferior parathyroid glands are ectopically located. This case is of a 54-year-old woman with hypercalcaemia 3.05 mmol/L and high PTH 22 pmol/L. Scintigraphy and CT scan of the neck in 2009 showed no signs of ectopic tissue. After treatment with Aredia (pamidronate disodium) infusion, calcium decreased to 2.73 mmol/L. In 2010 the serum calcium

Osteoradionecrosis of the hyoid bone--a novel application of the Sonopet ultrasonic aspirator.

A 66-year-old man with a history of squamous cell carcinoma of the right tonsil presented to the emergency department with two life-threatening episodes of haemoptysis 9 months after completion of chemoradiation. He was evaluated to rule out recurrent malignancy, and was determined to have osteoradionecrosis of his hyoid bone that had led to an oropharyngeal fistula. Given the proximity to branches of the external carotid, he was offered tracheostomy and resection of the protruding necrotic bone with ultrasonic bone aspirator, which was placed down the shaft of the laryngoscope to minimise dam

Manual strangulation: experimental approach to the genesis of hyoid bone fractures.

Discovery of a fracture of the hyoid bone during forensic autopsy is a feature that raises suspicions of constriction of the neck. Studies have shown the influence of gender and build of the individual on the morphology of this bone. Our aims were to confirm these findings and to develop an experimental protocol for simulating manual strangulation in order to determine the force required to fracture the hyoid bone and the influence of anthropometric parameters on this force. A total of 77 intact hyoid bones were obtained, scanned, modeled, measured and embedded in resin. Using a hydraulic pres

Causes of laryngeal cartilage and hyoid bone fractures found at postmortem.

The principal aims of this retrospective study were to assess the prevalence and causes of laryngo-hyoid fractures found in coroners' adult postmortem examinations over a five-year period. In 78 of 1930 cases (4%), there was a fracture of the larynx (thyroid or cricoid cartilage) or hyoid bone. The thyroid cartilage alone was fractured in 38 cases; the hyoid bone alone was fractured in 19 cases; the larynx and hyoid bone were both fractured in 21 cases, including one which involved the cricoid cartilage. There was no evidence of surface injury to the neck in 14.1% of cases. The majority (44/78

Isolated hyoid bone fracture: a case report and review of the literature.

Isolated hyoid bone fractures secondary to trauma other than strangulation are rare and have few, if any, complications. We report a case of an isolated hyoid bone fracture that resulted in sudden and severe upper airway compromise. Diagnosis of these fractures is difficult and usually can be made only with a strong degree of suspicion. Patients who suffer neck injuries in whom a hyoid fracture is diagnosed or strongly suspected should be observed for 48 to 72 hours, considered for endoscopy, and treated as warranted.

Ossification centre of the hyoid bone in DiGeorge syndrome and tetralogy of Fallot.

The incidence of radiographic visibility of the ossification centre of the body of the hyoid bone in radiographs taken during the first month of life was analysed for 34 autopsied infants: 16 with DiGeorge syndrome (DGS), 14 with tetralogy of Fallot (TOF), four with interrupted aortic arch (IAA) and a further 13, surviving infants with non-DGS TOF or non-DGS IAA. The incidence of visible hyoid ossification centre (HOC) was 75.7% in a control series of infants with neither congenital heart disease (CHD) nor DGS. Autopsied patients with DGS, TOF without DGS, and IAA without DGS showed a signific

Reconsideration of hyoid bone syndrome-A case series with a review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Hyoid bone syndrome is a type of faciocervical pain and occasionally concomitant clicking larynx that is caused by degeneration and/or elongation of the greater horn of the hyoid bone at the attachment of the stylohyoid ligament. CASES PRESENTATION: We report five patients who presented with deep-seated, dull, aching, throat pain that radiated from neck, accompanying by throat clicking while speaking, swallowing, yawning, and turning head. Most notably, one of them also complained an intermittent ulcer hemorrhage in the tongue base. Diagnostic tests included physical palpation of

Hyoid bone impingement contributing to symptomatic atherosclerosis of the carotid bifurcation.

Symptomatic carotid artery disease caused by hyoid bone compression is rare, although scant reports describe cerebrovascular events due to this mechanical interference leading to entrapment, embolism, dissection, atherosclerotic stenosis, and pseudoaneurysm formation. This report describes a patient presenting with left-sided paresis and paresthesia who was found to have focal right carotid stenosis secondary to impingement of the carotid bulb by an elongated hyoid bone. Whereas previous cases describe hyoid bone resection, we describe successful management with endarterectomy and carotid mobi

An Unusual Cervical Mass in the Hyoid Bone: Intermediate-Grade Chondrosarcoma.

We describe a case of a 31-year-old woman with a chondrosarcoma of the hyoid bone. The patient presented with a mass in the left submandibular region. Fine-needle aspiration cytology suggested chondroma, but further imaging investigation with CT revealed an exophytic tumor originating from the body of the hyoid bone. Histopathology of the surgical specimen confirmed the diagnosis of a intermediate-grade chondrosarcoma. Chondrosarcomas account for 11% of all bone cancers. Primary sites of the head and the neck include the nasal cavity, the skull base, the maxilla, the mandible. Chondrosarcomas

Osteochondroma of the Hyoid Bone: A Previously Unrecognized Location and Review of the Literature.

Osteochondroma is a benign cartilaginous neoplasm and the most common benign tumor of bone. Osteochondromas occur primarily in the axial skeleton with a predilection for the distal femur, and relatively few cases occur in the head and neck region. The majority of cases of osteochondromas in the head and neck region affect the mandibular condyle, with fewer cases reported in the skull base and the neck. To our knowledge, there is no reported case of osteochondroma of the hyoid bone documented in the English literature. We thus report the first case of a hyoid bone osteochondroma, presenting as

Composite hyoid bone graft interposition for the treatment of laryngotracheal stenosis.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic laryngotracheal stenosis (LTS) remains a challenging problem for otolaryngologists. A composite hyoid bone interposition graft has the potential to be an ideal graft because the head and neck surgeon can obtain the graft in the same operative field with good vascular supply from the muscle pedicle. METHODS: A composite hyoid interposition graft was used to provide structural support for the reconstructed lumen of the larynx or trachea in 2 cases of LTS. RESULTS: Two patients underwent successful decannulation with acceptable laryngeal function over a long-term observati
