The International journal of eating disorders1993eng
The authors investigated the significance of vomiting for hyperamylasemia and sialadenosis in patients with bulimia nervosa. Hyperamylasemia was found in 61% of the bulimics and in 20% of the restrictor anorectics but in no patients with binge-eating syndrome. In more than three fourths of the bulimics there was a close positive correlation between the frequency of vomiting and total serum amylase levels. Both frequency and type of vomiting seem to be relevant to the extent of salivary gland enlargement. The significance of vomiting for the etiopathology of hyperamylasemia and for the diagnosi

Serum amylase level was determined in 129 cases (225 episodes) of chronic respiratory failure at acute exacerbation and in 59 cases (62 episodes) of pneumonia without respiratory failure as control. Cases with accompanying diseases, such as acute pancreatitis, parotiditis, ileus and renal dysfunction, which were expected to develop hyperamylasemia were excluded. The 225 episodes were divided according to the causes of acute exacerbation into 4 groups: pneumonia, bronchitis, right heart failure without infection, and others (e. g. hemoptysis). Hyperamylasemia (greater than 400 S-U) was observed

General surgical complications after cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) are infrequent but serious. No prospective studies have evaluated their incidence. We analyzed in such a study 135 patients who were to undergo CPB. Among these 135 patients, an abdominal complication developed in 6.6%; it contributed to 2 of the 5 deaths. Postoperative hyperamylasemia was found in 36% of patients, but only 2 had overt pancreatitis. The hyperamylasemia was not due to the salivary component, pulmonary complications, or prolonged CPB (r = 0.22). A gastrointestinal hemorrhage occurred in 7 patients. No patients had

Elevated serum amylase has been frequently observed in COVID-19 patients, but whether hyperamylasemia results from a direct or indirect pancreatic effect or other mechanisms remains debated. Our study aimed to investigate the association between hyperamylasemia, pancreatitis, and COVID-19 severity. We retrospectively analyzed 1858 patients who visited the emergency department of Fondazione Policlinico Gemelli-IRCCS in Rome during the first two years of the pandemic. All had a confirmed COVID-19 diagnosis and underwent serum amylase evaluation. Clinical and laboratory data, including oxygen the

BACKGROUND/AIMS: We investigated the relationship between percutaneous papillary balloon dilatation (PPBD) and hyperamylasemia after PPBD.
METHODOLOGY: We studied the rate of pancreatitis and asymptomatic hyperamylasemia after PPBD for choledocholithiasis in 64 symptomatic patients. Pancreatitis was defined as epigastric pain combined with at least a 3-fold rise in serum amylase at 24 hours after PPBD. Asymptomatic hyperamylasemia was defined as a rise in serum amylase (normal range, 50 to 160 IU/L) without epigastric pain.
RESULTS: The stones were successfully pushed out into the duodenum i

145 clinical observations of 114 patients with Crohn's disease and 65 observations of 47 patients with ulcerative colitis were analyzed prospectively concerning the prevalence of pathologically elevated levels of serumamylase or -lipase and acute pancreatitis. Painless hyperamylasemia or hyperlipasemia were found in 18 of 114 patients with Crohn's disease (15.8%) and in 10 of 47 patients with ulcerative colitis (21.3%) without morphological abnormalities on ultrasound. Range of elevated serumamylase levels differs from 35 to 68 U/L (Ref.-value less than 34 U/L), range of serumlipase levels var

BACKGROUND: Serum amylase is secreted by salivary glands and pancreas and is used for the diagnosis of pancreatic and parotid diseases. A number of factors can elevate the level of serum amylase including pancreatic diseases, salivary disease, gastrointestinal diseases, liver diseases, gynecologic disease, cholecystitis, peritonitis, renal failure, and drug induced.
METHODS: We reported a case with abnormally elevated serum amylase, namely hyperamylasemia. Abdominal B-ultrasound, abdominal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), parotid computed tomography (CT), gastroscopy, and colonoscopy were us

Although pancreatitis is rare in pediatric burn patients, elevated pancreatic enzymes have been recently observed among toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) patients. This clinical phenomenon has implications particularly for the nutritional management of patients involved. The objective of this study was to assess the frequency of sustained, elevated amylase, and lipase enzymes among children with TEN or Stevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS) and to evaluate the utilization of enteral nutrition support in this population. Medical records of 24 patients admitted to our hospital between January 1994 and Oc

Serum concentrations of amylase, lipase, human pancreatic lipase and phospholipase A were measured in 34 patients (average age 28.5 [18-64] years) with anorexia nervosa (9 patients) and bulimia (25 patients). Hyperamylasaemia was demonstrated in 13 of the 34 patients (38%). But in only two of them was there also an elevated concentration of lipase and human pancreatic lipase. Phospholipase A was normal in all. Only one patient with isolated hyperamylasaemia had cholecystolithiasis, which was asymptomatic. In none of the patients with raised enzyme values was there otherwise any evidence of pan

Arginase deficiency is a progressive neurological disorder characterized by episodic hyperammonemia crises. Our patient had been diagnosed with cerebral palsy (spastic paraplegia) in childhood and received rehabilitation. She had suffered parotid swelling since the age of 5 years, prior to liver dysfunction becoming apparent, and then developed hyperamylasemia at 8 years of age. At age 25 years, she presented with hyperammonemia and elevations of aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase. At age 27 years, she was diagnosed with arginase deficiency due to hyperargininemia and abse

RATIONALE: Reports of malignant ovarian tumor with hyperamylasemia are very rare. We present a patient with hyperamylasemia who was diagnosed with a malignant ovarian tumor.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 46-year-old woman was hospitalized complaining of a 2-day history of abdominal discomfort and fever. On physical examination, she showed abdominal distention and tenderness, with rebound pain. Laboratory evaluation showed significantly elevated serum amylase levels. Computed tomography (CT) revealed a solid mass with uneven density in the pelvis.
DIAGNOSES: Based on her clinical symptoms and hyperamyl

European journal of pediatric surgery : official journal of Austrian Association of Pediatric Surgery ... [et al] = Zeitschrift fur Kinderchirurgie1995eng
Patients with choledochal cyst often have repeated attacks of abdominal pain accompanied by hyperamylasemia, and they may be diagnosed as having acute pancreatitis. However, the attacks generally tend to subside in a short period by conservative treatment, and evidence of pancreatitis is rarely observed at the time of surgery. Choledochal cyst is commonly associated with pancreatobiliary maljunction, and high concentrations of pancreatic enzymes in bile are usually observed. When the bile duct pressure increases due to obstructive cholangitis, pancreatic enzymes in bile may regurgitate into th

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS: Previous studies on the development of post-endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (post-ERCP) hyperamylasemia and pancreatitis have focused on different risk factors, either procedure- or patient-related, and also prognostic factors, such as amylase levels together with the occurrence of pancreatic-type pain, which might be implicated. The aim of this study is to identify possible predictive risk factors and also prognostic factors in order to better organize the treatment strategy.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: During a 5-year period, 556 ERCP procedures were perf

Recent studies have cast doubt on the concept of causative association between parathyroidectomy for primary hyperparathyroidism and postoperative pancreatitis. The present study indicated that the relationship was real and that the development of acute pancreatitis after parathyroid surgery was not purely incidental. Acute pancreatitis was observed postoperatively in 3 p. 100 of cases after parathyroidectomy (6/196 cases), in 37 p. 100 after pancreatic surgery (19/51 cases), but never after thyroidectomy (100 cases) or other extra-abdominal operations (100 cases). During the first five postop

BACKGROUND: Elevated pancreatic enzymes and pancreatitis-like imaging findings have been reported in patients with accidental hypothermia; however, their clinical significance remains unclear. This study aimed to explore a serum amylase threshold that may support consideration of computed tomography (CT) for evaluating pancreatitis-like findings in accidental hypothermia and describe the clinical course of affected patients.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective single-center observational study of adult patients with accidental hypothermia admitted to a tertiary emergency and critical care c

OBJECTIVE: To present a case report involving hyperamylasemia caused by tislelizumab and to assess the safety of tislelizumab using the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) database.
BACKGROUND: Although the anti-PD-1 monoclonal antibody tislelizumab is approved by the FDA, the small cohort sample sizes in clinical trials fail to support a thorough safety assessment, especially for immune-related adverse reactions.
CASE REPORT: A 69-year-old patient developed tislelizumab-related hyperamylasemia after 6 cycles of combination immunotherapy with pemetrexed, tislelizumab, and carboplatin.

Aim: Elevated levels of amylase in the blood, known as hyperamylasemia, have been correlated with diabetes and cancer. To investigate the impact of hyperamylasemia on cellular proliferation, it is imperative to design dual inhibitors targeting both α-amylase activity and cancer progression.Materials & methods: Naphthoquinone fused diazepines have been synthesized using multicomponent reaction with high Eco-score of 87 and evaluated for bio efficacy using antioxidant and α-amylase inhibition assay. A correlation between diabetes and cancer has been established via preliminary screening against
