The utility of hyperspectral imaging in patients with chronic venous disorders.

OBJECTIVE: The underlying pathophysiology of lower limb changes in chronic venous disorders (CVD) may involve alteration in microcirculation and tissue oxygenation. Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) is a noninvasive tool that is used clinically to measure transcutaneous oxygenation in peripheral artery disease and diabetic foot disease. However, there has been little application in venous disease. The aim of this study was to determine if transcutaneous oxygenation in the lower limb, as measured by HSI, changes depending on the clinical component of the Clinical-Etiological-Anatomical-Pathophysiolog

Hyperspectral Ophthalmoscope Images for the Diagnosis of Diabetic Retinopathy Stage.

A methodology that applies hyperspectral imaging (HSI) on ophthalmoscope images to identify diabetic retinopathy (DR) stage is demonstrated. First, an algorithm for HSI image analysis is applied to the average reflectance spectra of simulated arteries and veins in ophthalmoscope images. Second, the average simulated spectra are categorized by using a principal component analysis (PCA) score plot. Third, Beer-Lambert law is applied to calculate vessel oxygen saturation in the ophthalmoscope images, and oxygenation maps are obtained. The average reflectance spectra and PCA results indicate that

Hyperspectral imaging as a novel diagnostic tool in microcirculation of wounds.

UNLABELLED: Monitoring of perfusion is a cornerstone in surgery, phlebology and basic science to proof wound healing by interventions. In chronic wound management it is of utmost importance to realize and parametrize wound bed perfusion to verify actual, and plan further treatment by noninvasive diagnostics. Up to now monitoring is based on visual inspection of wounds as conventionally practiced over more than decades. The main problems of visual inspection are the lack of standardization and comparability because of interindividual variations. Therefore technical performance with contact free

High-throughput pharmaceutical classification via short-range interferometric hyperspectral imaging.

Short-wave infrared hyperspectral imaging (SWIR-HSI) enables rapid, non-destructive material characterization with high potential for process analytical technology and pharmaceutical screening. Here, we demonstrate high-throughput, full-field SWIR-HSI using Fourier transform spectroscopy (FTS) coupled with deep learning. Conventional FTS typically requires thousands of sampling points over a wide optical path difference (OPD) range to resolve spectral features. By directly processing raw interferograms with deep learning, bypassing conventional Fourier transformation, we achieved 98.9% pixel-l

Hyperspectral imaging combined with GA-SVM for maize variety identification.

The demand for identification of maize varieties has increased dramatically due to the phenomenon of mixed seeds and inferior varieties pretending to be high-quality varieties continuing to occur. It is urgent to solve the problem of efficient and accurate identification of maize varieties. A hyperspectral image acquisition system was used to acquire images of maize seeds. Regions of interest (ROI) with an embryo size of 10 × 10 pixel were extracted, and the average spectral information in the range of 949.43-1709.49 nm was intercepted for the subsequent study in order to eliminate random nois

Hyperspectral Imaging Detects Clitoral Vascular Issues in Gender-Affirming Surgery.

The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy of hyperspectral imaging (HSI) as an intraoperative perfusion imaging modality during gender affirmation surgery (GAS). The hypothesis posited that HSI could quantify perfusion to the clitoral complex, thereby enabling the prediction of either uneventful wound healing or the occurrence of necrosis. In this non-randomised prospective clinical study, we enrolled 30 patients who underwent GAS in the form of vaginoplasty with the preparation of a clitoral complex from 2020 to 2024 and compared patients' characteristics as well as HSI data regarding

Hyperspectral Raman Imaging for Automated Recognition of Human Renal Amyloid.

In the clinical setting, routine identification of the main types of tissue amyloid deposits, light-chain amyloid (AL) and serum amyloid A (AA), is based on histochemical staining; rarer types of amyloid require mass spectrometry analysis. Raman spectroscopic imaging is an analytical tool, which can be used to chemically map, and thus characterize, the molecular composition of fluid and solid tissue. In this proof-of-concept study, we tested the feasibility of applying Raman spectroscopy combined with artificial intelligence to detect and characterize amyloid deposits in unstained frozen tissu

Optical recognition of constructs using hyperspectral imaging and detection (ORCHID).

Challenges to deep sample imaging have necessitated the development of special techniques such as spatially offset optical spectroscopy to collect signals that have travelled through several layers of tissue. However, these techniques provide only spectral information in one dimension (i.e., depth). Here, we describe a general and practical method, referred to as Optical Recognition of Constructs Using Hyperspectral Imaging and Detection (ORCHID). The sensing strategy integrates (1) the spatial offset detection concept by computationally binning 2D optical data associated with digital offsets

Colorectal cancer detection by hyperspectral imaging using fluorescence excitation scanning.

Hyperspectral imaging technologies have shown great promise for biomedical applications. These techniques have been especially useful for detection of molecular events and characterization of cell, tissue, and biomaterial composition. Unfortunately, hyperspectral imaging technologies have been slow to translate to clinical devices - likely due to increased cost and complexity of the technology as well as long acquisition times often required to sample a spectral image. We have demonstrated that hyperspectral imaging approaches which scan the fluorescence excitation spectrum can provide increas

Advances in Hyperspectral Image Reconstruction From RGB Images for Food Quality Evaluation.

Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) provides detailed spectral and spatial data, making it an essential tool for non-destructive and rapid assessment of quality attributes in agricultural products. Despite its numerous applications in the food industry, widespread adoption has been limited due to the high cost and complexity of traditional hyperspectral imaging systems. To address these challenges, hyperspectral reconstruction from RGB images has emerged as a promising solution. RGB images/data can be obtained from simpler and cheaper sensors such as those found on cellphones. With recent advancements

Personalized digital pipeline for basal cell carcinoma delineation using hyperspectral imaging.

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common form of skin cancer with the current diagnostic procedures relying on surgical excisions and histopathological analyses. Incomplete removal of the tumor necessitates additional surgery, which is both costly and time-consuming. To address this, non-invasive diagnostic techniques capable of determining the dimensions of skin cancer preoperatively are urgently needed. This work presents the development of an automated diagnostic pipeline for delineating BCC, using hyperspectral imaging (HSI), combined with machine learning (ML). HSI is a non-invasive,

A Dual-Camera High-Resolution Hyperspectral Imaging System for the Retina.

Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) emerged as a powerful tool for biomedical applications, particularly in the analysis and discrimination of biological tissues. In this study, we developed a dual-camera system that integrates hyperspectral imaging with high-resolution RGB imaging to capture detailed retinal images. We tested different pan-sharpening algorithms to enhance the spatial resolution of the hyperspectral images, combining the spectral details of HSI with the spatial details of RGB imaging. We developed algorithms to estimate the diameter of retinal vessels and the oxygenation rate. We vali

Use of hyperspectral imaging to predict healing of diabetic foot ulceration.

Our main objective was to validate that hyperspectral imaging via a new portable camera carries the potential to provide a reliable clinical biomarker that can predict DFU healing. We recruited patients with diabetic foot ulceration (DFU) without peripheral arterial disease, infection or other serious illness. Using an hyperspectral imaging (HSI) apparatus, post-debridement hyperspectral images were taken evaluating the ulcer size, periwound oxyhemoglobin (OxyHb), deoxyhemoglobin level (DeoxyHb) and oxygen saturation (O2 Sat) for four consecutive visits. Twenty-seven patients were followed, ou

Intraoperative reperfusion assessment of human pancreas allografts using hyperspectral imaging (HSI).

BACKGROUND: The most common causes of early graft loss in pancreas transplantation are insufficient blood supply and leakage of the intestinal anastomosis. Therefore, it is critical to monitor graft perfusion and oxygenation during the early post-transplant period. The goal of our pilot study was to evaluate the utility of hyperspectral imaging (HSI) in monitoring the microcirculation of the graft and adequate perfusion of the intestinal anastomosis during pancreatic allotransplantation. METHODS: We imaged pancreatic grafts and intestinal anastomosis in real-time in three consecutive, simulta

A plug-and-play Hyperspectral Imaging Sensor using low-cost equipment.

Hyperspectral Imaging Sensors (HSI) obtain spectral information from an object, and they are used to solve problems in Remote Sensing, Food Analysis, Precision Agriculture, and others. This paper took advantage of modern high-resolution cameras, electronics, and optics to develop a robust, low-cost, and easy to assemble HSI device. This device could be used to evaluate new algorithms for hyperspectral image analysis and explore its feasibility to develop new applications on a low-budget. It weighs up to 300 g, detects wavelengths from 400 nm-1052 nm, and generates up to 315 different wavebands

Hyperspectral and Color Imaging of Solvent Vapor Sorption Into Porous Silicon.

A porous silicon thin film photonic crystal (rugate) sample with both a radial gradient in the rugate reflectance band wavelength and two spatially separated pore-wall surface chemistries (methylated and oxidized) was monitored by hyperspectral and color imaging while it was dosed with vapors of acetone, ethanol, heptane, 2-propanol, and toluene at concentrations ranging from 100 to 3,000 mg m-3. The shift in the wavelength of the rugate reflectance band maximum at each position along a transect across the two surface chemistries, as derived from the hyperspectral imaging, could discriminate b

Tissue perfusion in DIEP flaps using Indocyanine Green Fluorescence Angiography, Hyperspectral imaging, and Thermal imaging.

Flap necrosis continues to occur in skin free flap autologous breast reconstruction. Therefore, we investigated the benefits of indocyanine green angiography (ICGA) using quantitative parameters for the objective, perioperative evaluation of flap perfusion. In addition, we investigated the feasibility of hyperspectral (HSI) and thermal imaging (TI) for postoperative flap monitoring. A single-center, prospective observational study was performed on 15 patients who underwent deep inferior epigastric perforator (DIEP) flap breast reconstruction (n=21). DIEP-flap perfusion was evaluated using ICGA

Depth estimation from hyperspectral images based on chromatic aberration.

Chromatic aberration results in the focal length varying across different wavelengths, leading each wavelength to focus on objects at different distances. Based on this phenomenon, we propose a depth estimation network based on spectral chromatic aberration. Since there are no publicly available datasets for training spectral depth estimation networks, we constructed a large-aperture spectral imaging system and utilized its inherent chromatic aberration to acquire hyperspectral images. The corresponding ground-truth depth maps were obtained using monocular structured light 3D measurement techn
