What is the central question of this study? Does baroreceptor unloading during passive hyperthermia contribute to increases in ventilation and decreases in end-tidal carbon dioxide during that exposure? What is the main finding and its importance? Hyperthermic hyperventilation is not mitigated by expanding central blood volume and reloading the cardiopulmonary baroreceptors via rapid saline infusion or by reloading the arterial baroreceptors via phenylephrine administration. The absence of a reduction in ventilation upon reloading the baroreceptors to pre-hyperthermic levels indicates that car

Hyperthermia and exertional heat illness increase gastrointestinal (GI) permeability, although whether the latter is only via hyperthermia is unclear. The aim of this pilot study was to determine whether different changes in GI permeability, characterized by an increased plasma lactulose:rhamnose concentration ratio ([L:R]), occurred in exercise hyperthermia in comparison to equivalent passive hyperthermia. Six healthy adult male participants (age 25 ± 5 years, mass 77.0 ± 6.7 kg, height 181 ± 6 cm, peak oxygen uptake [ V·O2peak ] 48 ± 8 ml.kg-1 .min-1 ) underwent exercise under hot conditions

Stress exposure activates the autonomic nervous system and leads to a body temperature increase (stress-induced hyperthermia, SIH). On the other hand, an activation of the immune system in response to an infection leads to fever. Both processes increase body temperature, and the relation between SIH and infection-induced fever has been subject to debate. It is not clear whether SIH is a form of fever, or whether both processes are more or less distinct. We therefore examined the relation between SIH and infection-induced fever by looking at the effects of a GABA(A) receptor agonist (diazepam)

Malignant hyperthermia is a pharmacogenetic disorder that manifests clinically as a hypermetabolic crisis when a patient with a mutation in the ryanodine or dihydropyridine receptor genes is exposed to neuromuscular blocking agents. Depolarizing neuromuscular agents are known to cause malignant hyperthermia, but cases caused by nondepolarizing agents are rarely reported. We present a case consistent with malignant hyperthermia after receipt of cisatracurium, a nondepolarizing anesthetic agent. A 57-year-old male patient presented with shortness of breath and increased edema of the lower extrem

PURPOSE: Hyperthermia has been shown to affect both central and peripheral nervous systems. However, the consequences of these alterations on the proprioceptive mechanisms underlying human movement control remain unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of passive hyperthermia on various measures of proprioception and balance, two key components of injury prevention and movement efficiency.
METHODS: After a familiarization session, 14 volunteers (8 males, 6 females) completed two experimental sessions in temperate (CON, 24°C) and hot (HOT, 44°C-50°C) conditions, in a count

Malignant hyperthermia (MH), an inherited myopathia varying in severity and course, is induced by halogenated anesthetic agents and depolarizing muscle relaxants. First recognized as a distinct disease entity in 1960, MH is defined as an anesthesia-related disease due to the agents by which it is triggered. Given the wide use of these preparations in prehospital emergency medicine and intensive care treatment, physicians in other disciplines may also encounter MH.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Studies were designed to examine the effects of dietary fats on metabolic effects of 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA, Ecstasy). These effects included hyperthermia, expression of uncoupling protein (UCP1 and 3) in brown adipose tissue or skeletal muscle and plasma free fatty acid (FFA) levels.
EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: Male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed either a high-fat diet (HFD, 60% kcal) or a lower fat isocaloric controlled diet (LFD, 10% kcal) for 28 days before MDMA challenge.
KEY RESULTS: No significant differences were observed between LFD and HFD groups i

Malignant hyperthermia (MH) was observed in three cases of Halothane anesthesia performed in six littermate pigs. In two pigs, MH was totally reversed by the intravenous administration of Dantrolene 2 or 3 mg/kg. In one pig, an injection of 2 mg/kg reversed the MH symptoms transiently Dantrolene had no effect on the serum lactate values elevated in the MH-positive pigs. The therapeutic use of Dantrolene appears to be indicated in the stress-susceptible pigs.

An isospherical array of ultrasonic transducers designed for hyperthermia treatment of malignant tumors in humans was employed in studies of transient cavitation in tissues during ultrasonic heating. Both in vitro and in vivo studies revealed the presence of transient cavitation within tissues during ultrasonic heating, as indicated by the detection of the first half-order subharmonic of insonifying ultrasound with an interrogating transducer. The applied power to the focal region of the array required to exceed cavitation thresholds in tissue was 75 +/- 8 W/cm2, a level considerably higher th

The hyperthermic response to pyrogen was not potentiated by caffeine or theophylline administered i.p. into cats or rabbit. Injection of these drugs into the anterior hypothalamus or into the third cerebral ventricle in cats was also without effect on pyrexia. These results support the hypothesis that cyclic AMP in the anterior hypothalamus does not mediate pyrogen-induced hyperthermia in cats.

BACKGROUND: Hemolysis is a potential complication of catheter-based ventricular assist devices (CVADs), but severe hyperthermia is a rare occurrence that significantly affects further management and outcomes.
CASE SUMMARY: A young man with toxic methamphetamine-associated cardiomyopathy presented with cardiogenic shock, prompting placement of a CVAD. He soon developed severe hyperthermia unresponsive to cooling measures. The hyperthermia ultimately subsided with removal of the device.
DISCUSSION: Hemolysis and renal failure are known complications of CVAD placement. The hyperthermia in this

CLN3 disease (MIM# 204200), the most prevalent of the neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses (NCL), is an autosomal recessive disorder with juvenile onset characterized by blindness, epilepsy, dementia, psychiatric manifestations, and motor deterioration. Problems related to behavior, emotions and thought are among the main features. Antidepressant and antipsychotic drugs have been employed with variable results. Neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS) has previously been described in two patients with NCL, one with CLN3 disease and one with adult onset NCL of unclear genetic origin. Our aims were to des

Hyperthermia induces seizures in both humans and rodents, but the underlying mechanism remains unknown. The present study showed that hyperthermia, causing rapid increase in body temperature, increases the concentration of glutamate (Glu) released into a cortical perfusate before onset of seizures in rats and that this increase in Glu concentration correlated with a decrease in seizure threshold temperature. These results indicate that increased cortical extracellular Glu induced by hyperthermia contributes to onset of seizures. The same mechanism may be involved in clinical seizures induced b

This report describes three male patients arrested for aggressive and combative behavior, characteristic of phencyclidine intoxication, in whom severe hyperthermia, respiratory failure, and coma developed. Two days after the malignant hyperthermic event, serum transaminase levels rose acutely to extremely high levels with concomitant elevations in bilirubin levels and a fall in prothrombin activity. Liver biopsy specimens in two patients showed marked perivenular necrosis and collapse. No specific treatment was directed at the phencyclidine intoxication. Two of the three patients survived. Sub

Seven patients with malignant liver tumors were treated with Nd:YAG laser induced hyperthermia. The laserthermia was performed during laparotomy using Nd:YAG laser with contact sapphire probes with power settings of 6 W. The contact tip was placed into the middle of the tumor and the temperature in 1.5-2.0 cm from the middle of the tumor was raised and held between 41C and 45C for ten minutes. One fatal complication appeared caused by an air embolism. In the postoperative fine needle biopsies on third and fifth postoperative day the sytologic finding in the tumor was necrosis. However, in 30%

Six goats with myotonia congenita were exposed for 1 h to 1% halothane and a single injection of suxamethonium i.v. in an attempt to induce malignant hyperthermia. No evidence of malignant hyperthermia occurred. Suxamethonium did produce a myotonic response in each goat, lasting 10-20s, which was accompanied by a transient increase in aerobic metabolism as indicated by a decrease in PvO2 from 6.6 to 5.7 kPa, an increase in PaCO2 from 5.1 to 6.1 kPa and an increase in PVCO2 from 5.5 to 6.3 kPa. There was no evidence of any metabolic acidosis since the transient changes in pH and buffer base wer

TRPV1, a member of the transient receptor potential vanilloid subfamily, mediates nociception and thermoregulation. TRPV1-targeting analgesics frequently induce hyperthermia, underscoring the need for structural insights to guide the development of safer compounds. Here, we determined the structures of rat TRPV1 bound to the clinical candidate analgesics AMG517, AMG9810, and SB366791. AMG517 and AMG9810 are deeply situated within the S3-S4 interface of the vanilloid pocket, where they interact with residues from the S3-S6 helices, as well as the S4-S5 linker. These interactions induce local de

Hyperthermia induces heat stress (HS) and injuries in various human organs, or even leads to mortality, yet the underlying mechanism is incompletely uncovered. Our study revealed that HS in macrophages induced concurrent activation of pyroptotic, apoptotic, and necroptotic pathways, and the formation of PANoptosome-like complexes. However, these processes proceeded independently of ROS, as the ROS scavengers N-acetyl cysteine and mito-TEMPO failed to prevent the cell death (PANoptosis) despite effectively suppressing oxidative stress. Instead, HS caused reductive stress marked by NADPH accumul

Impaired thermoregulation and heat intolerance may be intrinsic to autonomic dysfunction in Parkinson's disease due to disturbances in perspiration regulation. Thermoregulatory impairment leading to hyperthermia/heatstroke can be accentuated with the usage of anticholinergics, which block the ability to sweat. Oxybutynin chloride is one of the most used anticholinergic agents in clinical practice for the management of detrusor hyperreflexia secondary to neurogenic bladder dysfunction and is often used in the setting of Parkinson's disease. We present a rare instance of oxybutynin-induced heats
