Electrically enhanced, Nature-Driven microbial attenuation of chromate and dichloromethane in groundwater.

Natural attenuation is a nature-based approach that relies on intrinsic biogeochemical and microbial processes to mitigate mixed heavy metals and organic pollutants in aquifer, yet its efficiency is limited by electron donor scarcity and suppressed microbial activity. Here, a low-energy bioelectrochemical strategy that uses a mild electric field (0.6 V) was introduced to sustainably stimulate the attenuation of chromate [Cr(VI)] and dichloromethane (DCM) co-contamination in groundwater. With minimal electrical input, Cr(VI) and DCM removal reached 95.0 ± 2.6% and 95.2 ± 0.5%, substantially out

Unveiling microbial community structure and metabolic pathway over carbon cloth-titanium nitride-polyaniline biocathode for effective dichloromethane transformation.

Chlorinated volatile organic compounds (Cl-VOCs) have dramatically biotoxicity and environmental persistence due to the presence of chlorine atoms, seriously jeopardizing ecological security and human health. Dichloromethane (DCM) as a model pollutant, is widely applied in solvents, extractants and cleaning agents in the pharmaceutical, chemical and food industries. In this study, highly biocompatible and conductive carbon cloth-titanium nitride-polyaniline (CC-TiN-PANI) bioelectrodes were obtained for DCM degradation in microbial electrolysis cell (MEC). The good adhesion of TiN and PANI on t

Effects of microplastic sorption on microbial degradation of halogenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in water.

Halogenated PAHs (HPAHs) are ubiquitous in the environment and have a toxicity similar to that of dioxin. Microplastics exist widely in the environment, and their sorption allows them to act as carriers of HPAHs, potentially changing the bioavailability of HPAHs. However, to the best of our knowledge related studies are limited. In this study, degrading bacteria of five HPAHs were cultivated from mangrove sediments. Among them, the Hyphomicrobium genus has good degradation ability on 9-BrAnt, 2-BrPhe and 2-ClPhe. The degradation process is in line with the first-order degradation kinetic chara

Combined partial denitrification-anammox with urea hydrolysis (U-PD-Anammox) process: A novel economical low-carbon method for nitrate-containing wastewater treatment.

For the sake of exploring a new economical and low-carbon alternative for real nitrate-containing wastewater treatment, a new combined partial denitrification-anammox with urea hydrolysis (U-PD-Anammox) process was developed. The nitrogen removal performance of this process was investigated through long-term operation in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) and two submerged anaerobic biological filters (SABF). Results showed that the average NO3--N to NO2-N transformation ratio improved to 82.6% with organic carbon source to NO3-N ratio of 1.8, and urea hydrolysis provided sufficient NH4+-N and i

PGPR-Treated Spent Mushroom Substrate Enhances Lignocellulose Degradation, Enzyme Activities, and Microbial Restructuring to Sustain Blueberry Rhizosphere Fertility.

Spent mushroom substrate (SMS) is a major agricultural byproduct whose complex lignocellulosic matrix hinders direct reuse and poses environmental risks when stockpiled. This study evaluated whether pretreatment with plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) could enhance SMS as a soil amendment for blueberry cultivation. Two PGPR-treated SMS formulations, along with raw SMS and a blank control, were applied to blueberry seedlings in a 10-month greenhouse experiment. Plant height, rhizosphere soil nutrients, enzyme activities, lignocellulose fractions, and the microbial communities were moni

Inhibition-level-based carrier selection and kinetic insights for optimised denitrification of saline wastewaters in MBBR.

The moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) provides a high-rate treatment process for the denitrification of saline industrial wastewaters. The carrier structure regulates the biofilm-liquid contact area and can limit the biofilm exposure not only to substrate but also to inhibitors and thus, affects the process performance. However, the potential for biofilms on different carriers to perform differentially under varying salinities remains unexplored as MBBR optimisation strategy. In this study, the nitrogen removal kinetics and biofilm dynamics of methanol-driven denitrification in two MBBRs with

Identification of key degraders for controlling toxicity risks of disguised toxic pollutants with division of labor mechanisms in activated sludge microbiomes: Using nonylphenol ethoxylate as an example.

Efficient management of disguised toxic pollutants (DTPs), which can undergo microbial degradation and convert into more toxic substances, necessitates the collaboration of diverse microbial populations in wastewater treatment plants. However, the identification of key bacterial degraders capable of controlling the toxicity risks of DTPs through division of labor mechanisms in activated sludge microbiomes has received limited attention. In this study, we investigated the key degraders capable of controlling the risk of estrogenicity associated with nonylphenol ethoxylate (NPEO), a representati

Metagenomics coupled with thermodynamic analysis revealed a potential way to improve the nitrogen removal efficiency of the aerobic methane oxidation coupled to denitrification process under the hypoxic condition.

Aerobic methane (CH4) oxidation coupled to denitrification (AME-D) is a promising wastewater treatment process for CH4 utilization and nitrogen removal. However, it is unclear which CH4-derived carbons are suitable for the AME-D process and how these organics are metabolized. In this study, metagenomics coupled with a thermodynamic model were used to explore the microorganisms and their metabolic mechanisms in an AME-D membrane biofilm reactor (MBfR) with high nitrogen removal efficiency. Results revealed that the aerobic methanotrophs of Methylomonas with the CH4-based fermentation potential

Constructing the active surface soil layer with ZVI-biochar amendment for simultaneous immobilization of As and Zn in both contaminated soil and groundwater: Continuous versus intermittent infiltration mode.

In this study, the zero valent iron-biochar composite (ZVI-BC) was applied to construct an active surface soil layer for the simultaneous remediation of As-Zn contaminated soil and groundwater, focusing on the influence of the infiltration mode of pumped-up groundwater into soil. The active surface soil treated more contaminated groundwater for As (4.45-5.46 L kg-1 soil) than that for Zn (2.52-3.13 L kg-1 soil) under both continuous and intermittent infiltration modes, with about 98% As and 95% Zn removed from groundwater and retained in the soil. As(V) precipitated with Fe(III) due to ZVI oxi

Effects of substrate fluctuation on the performance, microbial community and metabolic function of a biofilter for gaseous dichloromethane treatment.

Dichloromethane (DCM) is a harmful volatile organic compound that usually originates from pharmaceutical industry. In this study, the treatment of gaseous DCM in a biofilter was investigated by gradually increasing the DCM inlet concentration. Nearly 80% of DCM could be removed when the inlet concentration was lower than 0.30 g m-3. The maximum elimination capacity of 26.6 g m-3·h-1 was achieved at an inlet loading rate of 38.4 g m-3·h-1. However, with the increase in the inlet concentration to more than 0.60 g m-3, the removal efficiency obviously decreased to about 40%. After a starvation pe

Efficient degradation of aqueous dichloromethane by an enhanced microbial electrolysis cell: Degradation kinetics, microbial community and metabolic mechanisms.

Dichloromethane (DCM) has been listed as a toxic and harmful water pollutant, and its removal needs attention. Microbial electrolysis cells (MECs) are viewed as a promising alternative for pollutant removal, which can be strengthened from two aspects: microbial inoculation and acclimation. In this study, the MEC for DCM degradation was inoculated with the active sludge enhanced by Methylobacterium rhodesianum H13 (strain H13) and then acclimated in the form of a microbial fuel cell (MFC). Both the introduction of strain H13 and the initiation in MFC form significantly promoted DCM degradation.

Bacterial community and molecular ecological network in response to Cr2O3 nanoparticles in activated sludge system.

The potential environmental risks of chromium oxide nanoparticles (Cr2O3 NPs) have caused great concerns. However, their possible impacts on activated sludge process are very limited. In this study, we carried out long-term exposure experiments to evaluate the influence of Cr2O3 NPs on wastewater nutrient removal, bacterial community and molecular ecological network (MEN) in the sequencing batch reactor (SBR). It was found that 1 mg/L Cr2O3 NPs increased the effluent concentrations of NO3--N and TP from 6.5 to 15.4 mg/L, and 0.6-2.7 mg/L, indicating the serious deterioration of denitrification

Dual biocontrol strategy: Fluorescent pseudomonads and methylotrophic bacteria in combating Corynespora leaf spot in blackgram.

Blackgram leaf spot, caused by Corynespora cassiicola, is a serious disease that significantly reduces global blackgram production. The non-commercial nature of the crop and growing nutritional significance in recent years made it necessary to implement an economical and environmentally responsible disease management strategy. In this line, twenty isolates each of fluorescent pseudomonads (FP) and facultative methylotrophs (FM) were isolated from the black gram phyllosphere. In vitro dual-culture assays demonstrated the potential of FPs (CBP-05, PPP-01) and FMs (PPM-01, ABM-04) to inhibit the

Auxiliary voltage enhanced microbial methane oxidation co-driven by nitrite and sulfate reduction.

In this study, single-chamber bioelectrochemical reactors (EMNS) were used to investigate the methane oxidation driven by sulfate and nitrite reduction with the auxiliary voltage. Results showed that the methane oxidation was simultaneously driven by sulfate and nitrite reduction, with more methane being converted using the auxiliary voltage. When the voltage was 1.6 V, the maximum removal rate was achieved at 8.05 mg L-1 d-1. Carbon dioxide and methanol were the main products of methane oxidation. Simultaneously, nitrogen, nitrous oxide, sulfur ions, and hydrogen sulfide were detected as prod

Dichloromethane biodegradation in multi-contaminated groundwater: Insights from biomolecular and compound-specific isotope analyses.

Dichloromethane (DCM) is a widespread and toxic industrial solvent which often co-occurs with chlorinated ethenes at polluted sites. Biodegradation of DCM occurs under both oxic and anoxic conditions in soils and aquifers. Here we investigated in situ and ex situ biodegradation of DCM in groundwater sampled from the industrial site of Themeroil (France), where DCM occurs as a major co-contaminant of chloroethenes. Carbon isotopic fractionation (εC) for DCM ranging from -46 to -22‰ were obtained under oxic or denitrifying conditions, in mineral medium or contaminated groundwater, and for labora

Synergistic enhancement of hydrophobic n-hexane biodegradation in a biotrickling filter: Role of hydrophilic VOCs in mass transfer and extracellular polymeric secretion.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from the pharmaceutical industry, such as n-hexane, dichloromethane (DCM), and N, N-dimethylacetamide (DMAC), pose significant environmental and health risks. This study evaluates the performance of a bamboo charcoal-based bio-trickling filter (BTF) in removing these VOCs, comparing two systems: BTF-a, treating only n-hexane, and BTF-b, treating a mixture of n-hexane, DCM, and DMAC. After 26 days of operation at an n-hexane concentration of 100 mg m-3, BTF-b achieved a removal efficiency (RE) of 87.25 % for n-hexane, significantly higher than the 62 %
