Daily hyperhydration effect on electrolyte deficiency of endurance-trained subjects during prolonged hypokinesia.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of a daily intake of fluid and salt supplementation (FSS) on the deficiency of electrolytes, which is characterized by higher rather than lower plasma concentration of electrolytes during prolonged hypokinesia (HK) (decreased number of km taken per day). Forty long distance runners aged 22-25 yr with a peak VO2 65.4 mL min(-1) kg(-1) with an average 14.2 km d running distance were selected as subjects. They were equally divided into four groups: 1) unsupplemented control subjects (UCS); 2) unsupplemented hypokinetic subjects (UHS); 3) supplement

[Ultrasonic diagnosis of the changes in human tibia during 370-day antiorthostatic hypokinesia].

Nine volunteers, aged 27 to 41 years, were exposed to 370-day head-down tilting during which their tibia bones were examined by measuring acoustic parameters with the aid of exponential point concentrators located at a 15 mm distance. Although the bone acoustic profile showed individual variations, the decrease of the average ultrasound velocity in the middle part and the gradient of the ultrasound velocity in the distal part of the diaphysis occurred primarily in the first half of the bed rest study, thus reflecting changes in bone adaptation to mechanical loads (redistribution of elastic pro

Diagnosis of vascular parkinsonism: A new tool for gait hypokinesia occurring in older persons.

INTRODUCTION: Reliable diagnosis of vascular parkinsonism (VaP) in the presence of a gait hypokinesia is an issue that is encountered in geriatrics. The EVAMAR-AGEX study was focusing on the phenomenon of recurrent falls in older persons (OP) with this parkinsonian gait. The present study is focusing on the diagnosis of VaP-related parkinsonian gait by developing a diagnostic guidance model adapted to OP. METHODS: Data from baseline and the 2-year follow-up visit were used to carry out univariate analysis and calculation of odds ratios, allowing to identify relevant variables to include in th

Familial NEDD4L variant in periventricular nodular heterotopia and in a fetus with hypokinesia and flexion contractures.

BACKGROUND: Mutations in the HECT domain of NEDD4L have recently been identified in a cohort of eight patients with a syndromic form of bilateral periventricular nodular heterotopia (PVNH) in association with neurodevelopmental delay, cleft palate, and toe syndactyly (PVNH7). METHODS: Case report based on NGS sequencing. RESULTS: Here, we describe a girl with a novel heterozygous NEDD4L missense variant, p.Tyr679His, and characteristic clinical findings, including bilateral periventricular nodular heterotopia, cleft palate and mild toe syndactyly. Molecular testing from peripheral blood iden

[Role of signs of fetal hypokinesia in the diagnosis of spinal muscular atrophy of neonatal onset].

INTRODUCTION: Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is characterized by early degeneration of anterior horn cells. The most frequent and severe type of neonatal onset is Werdnig-Hoffmann disease. The neurologic and genetic characteristics of SMA are well-known. The aim of this study was to analyze the dysmorphologic features of this disease. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We present an analysis of 10 cases of SMA identified among 27,864 infants with congenital defects registered by the Spanish Collaborative Study of Congenital Malformations (ECEMC) between April 1976 and December 1998. We also report a clinic

Nosology of fetal hypokinesia sequence based on CNS abnormalities: is there an Aase-Smith syndrome?

Aase-Smith syndrome (ASS) is usually defined as a dominantly inherited combination of arthrogryposis, Dandy-Walker malformation and cleft palate. We describe a sporadic case of foetal akinesia with abnormal fossa posterior, fitting the diagnosis of ASS, and discuss the nosology of this entity among syndromes with distal arthrogryposis. ASS shows a "hybrid" phenotype: adults with mild ASS could be classified as distal arthrogryposis, whereas severely affected newborns overlap with the Marden-Walker phenotype, which is recessively inherited. The specificity of the disorder comes from the coexist

Deep profiling of nocturnal hypokinesia in multiple system atrophy and its clinical implications.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Patients with multiple system atrophy (MSA) spend more time supine overnight. Assessing nocturnal hypokinesia (NH) in MSA via video polysomnography (VPSG) is limited in metrics and analysis depth. This study deconstructs NH by sleep-wake phases, develops new VPSG-based body transition parameters, and explores their utility in understanding NH's pathogenesis and therapeutic implications in MSA. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed VPSG data of 150 participants - 58 MSA, 42 obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), and 50 controls. We analyzed the proportion of sleep in each body positio

Novel compound heterozygous ATP1A2 variants in a patient with fetal akinesia/hypokinesia sequence.

ATP1A2 encodes a subunit of sodium/potassium-transporting adenosine triphosphatase (Na+ /K+ -ATPase). Heterozygous pathogenic variants of ATP1A2 cause familial hemiplegic migraine, alternating hemiplegia of childhood, and developmental and epileptic encephalopathy. Biallelic loss-of-function variants in ATP1A2 lead to fetal akinesia, respiratory insufficiency, microcephaly, polymicrogyria, and dysmorphic facies, resulting in fetal death. Here, we describe a patient with compound heterozygous ATP1A2 variants consisting of missense and nonsense variants. He survived after birth with brain malfor

Peculiarities of Pharmacokinetics and Bioavailability of Some Cardiovascular Drugs under Conditions of Antiorthostatic Hypokinesia.

We studied pharmacokinetics and bioavailability of verapamil, propranolol, and ethacizine in healthy volunteers after single oral administration under normal conditions and on the second day of simulated antiorthostatic hypokinesia modeling some effects of microgravity. Under conditions of antiorthostatic hypokinesia, a tendency to a decrease in half-elimination period, mean retention time, and volume of distribution and an increase in the rate of absorption, ratio of maximum concentrations, and relative rate of absorption of verapamil and propranolol were revealed. For ethacizine, a statistic

Hypokinesia and presenile dementia in a Dutch family with a novel insertion in the prion protein gene.

The clinical features and disease course of six patients from a family with autosomal dominant inheritance of presenile dementia and a hypokinetic syndrome are described. In the past, these patients have carried diagnoses of Pick's disease, Huntington's disease, Parkinson-dementia, and one patient was described as suffering from a 'peculiar type of presenile dementia' in a case report. In the two cases examined, the most distinctive neuropathological features were extensive globular deposits of periodic acid-Schiff plus diastase (PAS)-positive material, having tinctural properties of amyloid o

[Comparison of the bone tissue reaction of rats to clinostatic and head-down tilt hypokinesia].

Examination of spongy bones of rats exposed to clino- and antiorthostatic hypokinesia showed that changes in bone mass, bone cells and their precursors were similar in both cases. The bone resorption-bone formation process remained balanced. However, bone responses clino- and antiorthostatic hypokinesia exhibited certain differences. Clinostatic hypokinesia produced greater osteoporosis in the femoral bone, whereas bone losses in the humerus, sternum and pelvis were identical. Antiorthostatic hypokinesia led to osteoporosis that was identical in every bone examined. In addition, clino- and ant

[Reactions of the adrenal cortex to immobilization stress in intact animals and against a background of hypokinesia].

Morphological investigation of the rat adrenal cortex and corticosterone contents in the blood plasma demonstrated certain peculiarities in the adrenal reaction to the primary and repeated immobilization stress in intact animals and after hypokinesia. It has been stated that morphological manifestation to an acute stress reaction kinesia is less pronounced than at an analogous single effect. Investigation on corticosterone content in blood plasma revealed certain functional peculiarities in the adrenal cortex reactions in different variants of the experiments. Five hours after the beginning of

In vivo bone mineral studies on volunteers during a 370-day antiorthostatic hypokinesia test.

Bone mineral of spine, femur, tibia, forearm, calcaneus, hand, and foot was studied on nine volunteers by quantitative computed tomography, neutron activation analysis, single and dual photon absorptiometry during and after long-term hypokinesia. Conditions of long-term space flight were simulated using a 370-day antiorthostatic hypokinesia test. It is shown that the highest mineral losses occur in foot bones including calcaneus. Remedial measures undertaken delay the process of osteoporosis development but do not completely exclude it. The results obtained by different methods are often confl

[Vestibular function of middle-aged persons exposed to 30-day head-down tilt hypokinesia].

Vestibular responses of 15 men (aged 42-50) to 30-day head-down tilt (-8 degrees) were investigated. The test subjects showed atherosclerotic symptoms and neuro-circulatory dystonia of the hypertensive type. They were exposed to the Fitzgerald-Hallpike caloric test, indirect otolithometry (eye counter-rolling reflex according to the method of successively presented images), and motion sickness according to Bryanov. In the pretest period vestibular changes were seen at the level of labyrinths and central formations (change in the nystagmic pattern, dissociation of the components of the caloric

Loss-of-function mutations in SCN4A cause severe foetal hypokinesia or 'classical' congenital myopathy.

Congenital myopathies are a clinically and genetically heterogeneous group of muscle disorders characterized by congenital or early-onset hypotonia and muscle weakness, and specific pathological features on muscle biopsy. The phenotype ranges from foetal akinesia resulting in in utero or neonatal mortality, to milder disorders that are not life-limiting. Over the past decade, more than 20 new congenital myopathy genes have been identified. Most encode proteins involved in muscle contraction; however, mutations in ion channel-encoding genes are increasingly being recognized as a cause of this g
