Cyto-, dendro- and fibro-architectonic studies on the chicken hypothalamus.

Based on the chicken hypothalamic analysis using the Nissl, Golgi-Cox and silver staining methods, a first attempt to make the cyto-, dendro- and fibro-architectonic atlases of the frontal planes at the same level was performed. In the preparations stained with Nissl method, the hypothalamus was subdivisible basically into the preoptic, rostral and caudal hypothalamic regions, each of which was composed of medial and lateral parts respectively. A well-defined boundaries between the preoptic and rostral hypothalamic regions was decided at the level of the rostral margin of the commissura rostra

[Reactions of hypothalamic neurons to stimulation of the pelvic and sciatic nerves].

Unit activity of posterior, tuberal and anterior parts of the hypothalamus was studied during stimulation of the pelvic nerve in anesthetized and immobilized cats. Comparative analysis showed that neurons of the posterior hypothalamus were more responsive (89.6%) and had a shorter mean latency (33.3 +/- 2.4 msec) than neurons of more rostral parts of the hypothalamus. The focus of maximal pelvic-induced unit activity seems to be located in the posterior hypothalamus. The unit responses of the posterior hypothalamus evoked by pelvic nerve stimulation had long recovery cycles and were suppressed

[Parasympathetic discharges of the pelvic nerve during stimulation of different hypothalamic structures].

The characteristics of evoked responses in pelvic nerve elicited with electrical stimulation of posterior, tuberal, anterior hypothalamus and preoptic area were studied in anesthetized and immobilized cats. The complex response in pelvic nerve consisted of waves I, II, III with latencies from 13 to 28, 52 to 96, 113 to 256 msec, resp. The evoked responses of lowest thresholds and shortest latencies were obtained from the posterior hypothalamus. These data suggest that hypothalamic parasympathoactivating neurons are localized mostly in the posterior hypothalamus. After high frequency (100/sec,

CNS-endocrine pancreas system. I. The hypothalamus response to insulin deficiency.

The anterior, medial and posterior hypothalamic nuclei in alloxan-diabetic male rats were studied by karyometry. Selective responsiveness of separate nuclei of the medial basal hypothalamus (MBH) and the anterior hypothalamus was revealed. In the MBH cell nuclear-size changes were most prominent in the ventromedial nucleus and less pronounced, but significant, in the arcuate nucleus. In the anterior hypothalamus a significant response was produced by the supraoptic nucleus. The authors do not exclude the possibility that the reaction of the neurosecretory cells of the supraotic nucleus is indi

Panic-like defensive behavior but not fear-induced antinociception is differently organized by dorsomedial and posterior hypothalamic nuclei of Rattus norvegicus (Rodentia, Muridae).

The hypothalamus is a forebrain structure critically involved in the organization of defensive responses to aversive stimuli. Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)ergic dysfunction in dorsomedial and posterior hypothalamic nuclei is implicated in the origin of panic-like defensive behavior, as well as in pain modulation. The present study was conducted to test the difference between these two hypothalamic nuclei regarding defensive and antinociceptive mechanisms. Thus, the GABA(A) antagonist bicuculline (40 ng/0.2 µL) or saline (0.9% NaCl) was microinjected into the dorsomedial or posterior hypothala

The release of catecholamines in hypothalamus and locus coeruleus is modulated by peripheral chemoreceptors.

To investigate whether impulses from chemoreceptors influence the release of catecholamines in the hypothalamus and the locus coeruleus, the two brain areas were superfused simultaneously and bilaterally with artificial cerebrospinal fluid through push-pull cannulae. The release of catecholamines was determined in the superfusate before and during chemoreceptor stimulation by bicarbonate solution saturated with carbon dioxide (CO2-NaHCO3) or KCN. Experiments were carried out on intact cats after carotid body denervation (CD). Intracarotid infusion of CO2-NaHCO3 increased arterial blood pressur

Posterior hypothalamic lesions advance the onset of puberty in the female rhesus monkey.

The effects of experimental lesions in the posterior hypothalamus and the anterior hypothalamus on menarche and first ovulation were examined in nonhuman primates. With the aid of x-ray ventriculography, bilateral lesions were made by passing a radiofrequency current through a thermister electrode in the posterior hypothalamus (n = 7) or the anterior hypothalamus (n = 6) of female rhesus monkeys at 18 months of age. Four animals that received sham lesions as well as four normal females of a similar age served as controls. All animals were caged individually and examined daily for vaginal bleed

Hypothalamic beta 2-adrenoceptor control of renal sympathetic nerve activity and urinary sodium excretion in conscious, spontaneously hypertensive rats.

The contributions of beta 1-, B2-, and alpha 2-adrenoceptors in the posterior hypothalamus to the increased renal sympathetic nerve activity and decreased urinary sodium excretion resulting from environmental stress (air jet) in conscious spontaneously hypertensive rats were examined. Air stress increased mean arterial pressure and renal sympathetic nerve activity (54% from 7.0 +/- 0.7 integrator resets/min), and decreased urinary sodium excretion (44% from 2.7 +/- 0.4 microEq/min per 100 g body weight). After bilateral injection of ICI 118,551 (beta 2-adrenoceptor antagonist) into the posteri

PRL and ACTH secretion following acute heat exposure, in intact and in hypothalamic deafferentated male rats.

Adult male rats, intact or bearing complete, anterior or posterior hypothalamic deafferentiations (CHD, AHD AND PHD, respectively) were acutely exposed to environmental temperature of 36 degrees C, and serum PRL and ACTH concentrations were determined by RIA. In intact animals, heat exposure resulted in elevated serum PRL and ACTH levels. None of the deafferentations affected basal serum PRL concentrations, whereas those of ACTH were elevated in both CHD and AHD, but not in PHD groups, as compared to intact controls. The PRL heat response was completely absent in CHD, attenuated in AHD, and de

Immediate hypotensive after-effects of posterior hypothalamic lesions in awake rats with spontaneous, renal, or Doca hypertension.

If the posterior hypothalamus contributes to elevate blood pressure in hypertension by increasing sympathetic vasomotor activity, then lesions of the posterior hypothalamus should lower blood pressure more in hypertensive than in normotensive rats. To test this hypothesis without complications caused by anaesthesia, aortic pressures were recorded from indwelling catheters in awake rats before and after selective hypothalamic destruction. In normotensive rats rats, bilateral lesions of the medial areas of the posterior hypothalamus always lowered blood pressure while those in the anterior hypot

The hypothalamus: anatomy and functions.

The neuroanatomy of the human hypothalamus is reviewed with special interest focused on its neuroendocrine role. The magnocellular neurons in the supraoptic and paraventricular nuclei are the site of synthesis of the nonapeptides antidiuretic hormone and oxytocin and their carriers, the neurophysins. They are in close relation with the posterior lobe of the pituitary which contains their axonal neurosecretory endings. The parvocellular neurons are scattered around the third ventricle, from the preoptic area towards the infundibulum. They control the adenohypophysis by the releasing hormones fo

Diurnal changes in the plasma concentrations of LH and hypothalamic contents of LHRH-I and LHRH-II in the domestic hen.

Diurnal changes of LH secretion in sexually immature hens of 9, 11, 13 and 15 weeks of age consisted of 25-40% increases in the mean concentrations of LH in plasma between 15.00 and 18.00 h, i.e. between 2 h before and 1 h after the onset of darkness. During this time there was a tendency for the mean contents of LHRH-I in the anterior hypothalamus and posterior hypothalamus to increase by 21-74% and 20-56% respectively. In hens of 9 and 15 weeks, diurnal changes in the plasma concentration of LH closely paralleled those of LHRH-I content in the posterior hypothalamus. In contrast, the diurnal

Modifications in gonadotropin control and reproductive behavior in the female rat by hypothalamic and preoptic lesions.

Effects of small hypothalamic and preoptic area lesions on vaginal cyclicity, ovulation and ovarian weights of female rats were examined. Animals were then gonadectomized and tested for lordosis behavior following injections of estrogen alone and estrogen plus progesterone. Male sex behavior was also measured during daily treatment with testosterone. Relative to sham operated rats, lesions in the dorsal preoptic area produced a significant increase in lordosis behavior, virtual elimination of male sex behavior, and only marginal effects on ovarian function. Animals with lesions in the ventral

Conditional Viral Tract Tracing Delineates the Projections of the Distinct Kisspeptin Neuron Populations to Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone (GnRH) Neurons in the Mouse.

Kisspeptin neurons play an essential role in the regulation of fertility through direct regulation of the GnRH neurons. However, the relative contributions of the two functionally distinct kisspeptin neuron subpopulations to this critical regulation are not fully understood. Here we analyzed the specific projection patterns of kisspeptin neurons originating from either the rostral periventricular nucleus of the third ventricle (RP3V) or the arcuate nucleus (ARN) using a cell-specific, viral-mediated tract-tracing approach. We stereotaxically injected a Cre-dependent recombinant adenovirus enco

Hypothalamic involvement in multiple system atrophy: A structural MRI study.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate hypothalamic atrophy and its clinical correlates in multiple system atrophy (MSA) in-vivo. BACKGROUND: MSA is characterized by autonomic dysfunction and parkinsonian/cerebellar manifestations. The hypothalamus regulates autonomic and homeostatic functions and is also involved in memory and learning processes. METHODS: 11 MSA, 18 Parkinson's Disease (PD) and 18 Healthy Controls (HC) were included in this study. A validated and automated hypothalamic segmentation tool was applied to 3D-T1-weighted images acquired on a 3T MRI scanner. MSA hypothalamic volumes were comp

Distribution of corticotropin releasing factor(s) activity in neural and extraneural tissues of the rat.

Distribution and dose-response characteristics of corticotropin releasing factor(s) (CRF) activity in the central nervous and extraneural tissues of the rat were examined with a sensitive CRF bioassay using ACTH secretion by cultured rat adenohypophyseal cells. Dose-response curves for hypothalamus were steeper than and not parallel to those for cerebral cortex, liver, serum or human urine. The minimum effective dose was smallest for the posterior pituitary. CRF activity of the basal hypothalamus was considerably higher than that in other parts of the hypothalamus, and was unaltered by 2.5 or

Electrophysiology and Structural Connectivity of the Posterior Hypothalamic Region: Much to Learn From a Rare Indication of Deep Brain Stimulation.

Cluster headache (CH) is among the most common and debilitating autonomic cephalalgias. We characterize clinical outcomes of deep brain stimulation (DBS) to the posterior hypothalamic region through a novel analysis of the electrophysiological topography and tractography-based structural connectivity. The left posterior hypothalamus was targeted ipsilateral to the refractory CH symptoms. Intraoperatively, field potentials were captured in 1 mm depth increments. Whole-brain probabilistic tractography was conducted to assess the structural connectivity of the estimated volume of activated tissue

Precocious development of the testes in chicks following parasagittal knife cuts of the lateral hypothalamic area.

Early development of the testes was effected in chicks following parasagittal knife cuts through the entire lateral hypothalamic area (extending from preoptic to mammillary region). Associated with the accelerated development of the testes was a significantly reduced body weight compared to sham-operated controls (P less than 0.05). Bilateral cuts involving solely the anterior or posterior hypothalamic regions did not cause precocious puberty. At this time the critical fiber tracts which were bilaterally sectioned and their associated neurohumoral mechanism responsible for the initiation of se

Biosynthesis of vasopressin.

The nonapeptide vasopressin is synthetized as part of a longer common precursor polypeptide, together with its carrier protein neurophysin and a glycopeptide of unknown function. The gene for this common precursor has been isolated and sequenced and shown to comprise three exons encoding, respectively, the protein domains approximately corresponding to the N-terminal leader peptide and hormone, to most of the neurophysin, and to the glycopeptide. In the Brattleboro rat, the hereditary hypothalamic diabetes insipidus, characteristic of this strain, has been shown to be caused by a single nucleo
