Vector borne and zoonotic diseases (Larchmont, N.Y.)2010eng
The root and leaf extracts of four plants, Occimum gratissimum, Azadirachta indica, Pterocarpus santalinoides, and Pistia hyptis, were studied for repellent activities against the adults of Simulium damnosum sensu lato. The leaves and roots were extracted with 95% ethanol and the stocks were diluted with paraffin. The repellent activities of the extracts were investigated using human baits along the banks of River Oyan and River Ogun in southwestern Nigeria. The results showed that the root extract of O. grattissium and leaf extract of P. hyptis had highest repellent potentials with 78% and 78

Paracoccidioides spp., a dimorphic pathogenic fungus, is the etiologic agent of paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM). PCM is an endemic disease that affects at least 10 million people in Latin America, causing severe public health problems. The drugs used against pathogenic fungi have various side effects and limited efficacy; therefore, there is an inevitable and urgent medical need for the development of new antifungal drugs. In the present study, we evaluated the transcriptional profile of Paracoccidioides lutzii exposed to argentilactone, a constituent of the essential oil of Hyptis ovalifolia. A

Eplingiella fruticosa (Lamiaceae), formally known as Hyptis fruticosa, is an important aromatic medicinal herb used in folk medicine in northeastern Brazil. We aimed to evaluate the anti-hyperalgesic effect of essential oil obtained from E. fruticosa (HypEO) complexed with βCD (HypEO-βCD) in a chronic widespread non-inflammatory muscle pain animal model (a mice fibromyalgia-like model, FM). The HypEO was extracted by hydro distillation and its chemical composition was determined by GC-MS/FID. Moreover, Fos protein expression in the spinal cord was assessed by immunofluorescence. Paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM) is the cause of many deaths from systemic mycoses. The etiological agents of PCM belong to the Paracoccidioides genus, which is restricted to Latin America. The infection is acquired through the inhalation of conidia that primarily lodge in the lungs and may disseminate to other organs and tissues. The treatment for PCM is commonly performed via the administration of antifungals such as amphotericin B, co-trimoxazole, and itraconazole. The antifungal toxicity and side effects, in addition to their long treatment times, have stimulated research for new bioactive com

Lignans are diphenolic compounds widely distributed in the plant kingdom. They are mainly localised in lignified tissues, seeds and roots. These molecules are involved in plant defence mechanisms, but are also interesting for human health. Flax lignans belonging to the phytoestrogens are metabolised after ingestion into enterolignans that may offer a protection against the onset and development of hormono-dependant cancers. In vitro studies based on mammalian cellular models tend to confirm their beneficial effects observed during epidemiological studies and give us insights about their mechan

Due to increasing insecticide resistance and environment concerns associated with synthetic chemicals, this study evaluates the larvicidal potential of essential oils (EO) extracted from seven plant species using hydro-distillation against Aedes aegypti larvae. The chemical profiles of the volatile oils were characterized through gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The major constituents identified were thymol (74.93%) in Plectranthus amboinicus leaves, terpinen-4-ol (27.13%) in Myristica fragrans nuts, citral (27.55%) in Citrus limon leaves, caryophyllene oxide (36.11%) in Hyptis su

Spinocerebellar ataxia type 3 (SCA3) is an autosomal dominant neurodegenerative disorder that gives rise to motor incoordination and progressive functional disabilities. Although pharmacological interventions have revealed promising prospects in the management of SCA3, adverse effects may become unbearable. The use of herbal remedies in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) may serve as potential alternative medicines to delay the progression of the disease. This systematic review is intended to identify, appraise, and summarize the findings of studies pertaining to the therapeutic roles of herba

BACKGROUND: Carapa procera products, particularly the vegetable oil, are prized for their cosmetic, medicinal and especially insect repellent/insecticide properties. The latter property raises questions about the use of this plant against mosquitoes that transmit pathogens within Ivorian communities, given that Côte d'Ivoire is endemic for malaria. There is no scientific report on the use of C. procera and the plants traditionally used to prevent mosquito bites in Côte d'Ivoire. The aim of this study is therefore to determine the virtues of C. procera known to the people of Côte d'Ivoire and t

BACKGROUND: In developing countries, the practice of food taboo is pervasive. The types of foods considered as taboos and the reasons attached to taboos vary from society to society. Food taboos have been recognized as one of the factors contributing to maternal undernutrition in pregnancy, especially in rural settings. In the rural Acholi community where malnutrition is prevalent, very little is known about these food taboos and misbeliefs. This study, therefore, aims to explore various misbeliefs and food taboos in the time of pregnancy that can influence maternal and child nutrition outcome
