BACKGROUND: Whether Hyrax maxillary expander is an effective treatment for maxillary transverse deficiency as well as expansion of the upper airway is still controversial. The study's purpose was to evaluate 3D changes in upper airway dimensions of adolescent patients measured primarily by cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) after rapid maxillary expansion (RME) with the Hyrax maxillary expander.
METHODS: Studies up to 1 April 2024 were searched in the following databases: PubMed/MEDICINE, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and Embase. Inclusion criteria were clinical trials and cohort studie

PURPOSE: It is known that a correct transverse maxillary dimension is a key factor for a stable occlusion, which brings functional and esthetic benefits for the patient. In patients presenting maxillary atresia and the completion of bone growth, a highly recommended option for correction is the surgically assisted rapid maxillary expansion (SARME) associated with the Hyrax appliance. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of tooth anchorage variations of the Hyrax appliance in SARME through finite element analysis, evaluating which anchorage option might be associated with m

BACKGROUND: Zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis (ZCL) is endemic in Palestine and transmitted by Phlebotomus sand flies. They inhabit dens of hyraxes, the reservoir animal. Control measures were implemented since 1996 but cases still occur. We estimated the effect of insecticide thermal fogging inside hyrax dens on sand fly density and leishmania infection.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: During July-September 2019, we conducted a 12-week controlled interrupted time series study in two control and one intervention sites containing three hyrax dens each. We implemented Permethrin thermal fogging

While anthropogenic land-use changes threaten wildlife globally, some species take advantage of such changes and disperse into urban areas. The wildlife in urban areas often promotes conflicts with humans, notably when the animals are associated with the spread of zoonotic diseases. In Israel, current urban invasion of rock hyraxes (Procavia capensis) draws public attention, since the species is a reservoir host of cutaneous leishmaniasis, a serious skin disease. The rock hyrax, however, has seldom been studied in densely populated areas, and the drivers for its urban expansion, as well as its

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of surgically assisted rapid maxillary expansion on the sagittal and vertical maxillary planes. Thirty-three adult patients aged between 18 and 40 years who required surgically assisted rapid maxillary expansion were included in this study. They were divided into two groups: the Haas type expander (16) and the Hyrax type expander (17). All patients were subjected to subtotal LeFort I osteotomy with pterygomaxillary disjunction. Lateral cephalometric radiographs were taken during the preoperative assessment (T1), soon after completion of the

Cutaneous leishmaniasis caused by Leishmania major (zoonotic, ZCL) and L. tropica (anthroponotic, ACL) is found in most countries of the Eastern Mediterranean Region. Phlebotomus papatasii is the proven vector of L. major and rodents Rhombomys opimus, Psammomys obesus, Meriones spp. and Gerbillus spp. serve as animal reservoirs. Ph. sergenti is the vector of L. tropica in the majority of endemic foci. On the other hand; in the Eastern African highlands (mainly Ethiopia and Kenya), stable foci of L. aethiopica are maintanined by hyraxes and transmitted by Ph. longipes and Ph. pedifer. In this p

Given the current rate of habitat loss, particularly in the tropics, reliable data on the population size and habitats of wild animals are crucial for initiating conservation and management activities in specific areas. Wildlife ecologists have not studied the ecology of most medium-sized mammals in detail. The rock hyrax (Procavia capensis) is one such medium-sized mammal that has not been well-studied in Ethiopia. Therefore, we conducted this study to determine the population size and examine local residents' attitudes toward the rock hyrax in the Zegie Peninsula, Ethiopia. We applied the st

BACKGROUND: Distalization in orthodontics is one of conservative treatment modalities that result in gaining space especially in dental orthodontic cases of class ΙΙ molar relationship.
AIM: A prospective parallel double group randomized clinical trial aimed to compare the distalization effects of the skeletally anchored modified Leaf Expander versus the skeletally anchored modified conventional Hyrax Expander. Skeletally anchored distalizers for orthodontic treatment are better than dentally anchored distalizers (Superiority).

Anterior maxillary distraction osteogenesis (AMDO) is often used for the correction of maxillary retrognathia in select cleft lip and palate cases. The restoration of alveolar arch continuity is desirable before the initiation of AMDO in these cleft maxillary deformities; however, AMDO is technically difficult in a patient with coexisting alveolar cleft where there is a discontinuity of the defect that presents a challenge in terms of adequate vector control of the movement of the anterior segment and the potential risk of tipping of teeth, which already have compromised anchorage/bone support
