Lessons Learned Applying the Icelandic Prevention Model to Youth Mental Health and Well-Being in Idaho.

BACKGROUND: The US is facing a youth mental health crisis. The Icelandic prevention model (IPM) may represent one promising way to address it. This paper describes using the IPM to promote youth mental health, with special attention given to the guiding principle of "embracing public schools as the natural hub of community efforts to support children and adolescents." CONTRIBUTIONS TO PRACTICE: Communities for Youth (C4Y) leads academic-community partnerships that facilitate community-level approaches to improving youth mental health. While implementing the IPM, C4Y has learned valuable lesso

Genetic analysis of West Nile virus isolates from an outbreak in Idaho, United States, 2006-2007.

West Nile virus (WNV) appeared in the U.S. in 1999 and has since become endemic, with yearly summer epidemics causing tens of thousands of cases of serious disease over the past 14 years. Analysis of WNV strains isolated during the 2006-2007 epidemic seasons demonstrates that a new genetic variant had emerged coincidentally with an intense outbreak in Idaho during 2006. The isolates belonging to the new variant carry a 13 nt deletion, termed ID-Δ13, located at the variable region of the 3'UTR, and are genetically related. The analysis of deletions and insertions in the 3'UTR of two major linea

Incidence, Distribution, and Pathogenicity of Fungi Growing on Sugar Beet Roots on Top of Outdoor Piles in Idaho.

Sugar beet roots in Idaho are held under ambient conditions in outdoor storage piles, which can lead to fungal growth and rot and substantial sucrose loss. Thus, the incidence, distribution, and pathogenicity of fungi associated with fungal growth on the surface of sugar beet roots on top of outdoor piles was investigated. The surface fungal growth on sugar beet roots held on top of 14 Idaho outdoor piles (tarped ventilated [TV] piles and piles with no tarps or ventilation [NTV] at seven locations) was assessed in 2018 to 2019 and 2019 to 2020. Cladosporium spp. were the only fungi covering mo

137Cs Lake Sediment Depth Profiles and Inventories Within Four Lakes of Idaho's Sawtooth Wilderness.

A total of 68 sediment cores from four freshwater alpine lakes in Idaho's Sawtooth Wilderness were collected during the summer of 2017. The objectives of the study were to determine depth distributions of Cs in the cores using gamma spectrometry and to estimate the sedimentation rates of the lakes from the identified geochronological peaks linked to nuclear fallout. The Cs radioactivity above reference-area values was detected in all studied lakes. The maximum Cs concentrations measured in each lake's sediment ranged from 74.0 ± 6.09 to 255 ± 7.48 Bq kg. Factors such as elevation, latitude, an

Geographic Distribution and Neuropathology of Elaeophora schneideri in Shiras Moose (Alces alces shirasi) in Idaho, USA.

Elaeophorosis, infection by the filarial worm Elaeophora schneideri, is a parasitic disease of wild ungulates in North America; however, our understanding of the relevance of E. schneideri to moose (Alces alces) morbidity and mortality is incomplete. Between March 2020 and July 2022, necropsy and histopathology were performed on 61 Shiras moose (Alces alces shirasi) in Idaho, US. Among the 41 adults (greater than 1 yr old), 21 moose were from northern Idaho, and 20 were from southeastern Idaho. Elaeophorosis was diagnosed in 24% (10 of 41). All 10 infected moose were from southeastern Idaho; n

Food insecurity among Latina women in Idaho and Washington: structural vulnerability, psychosocial factors, and cardiometabolic risk.

INTRODUCTION: Latina women in the United States face overlapping nutritional, social, and cardiometabolic vulnerability, yet how food insecurity, excess weight, and cardiometabolic risk co-occur in underrepresented communities remains insufficiently characterized. We examined food insecurity among Latina women in Idaho and Washington as a marker of vulnerability and situated it within a broader context of excess weight, prediabetes risk, and structural and psychosocial disadvantage. METHODS: Cross-sectional survey data were collected from 199 self-identified Latina women recruited through a s

Modeling seasonal aphid (Hemiptera: Aphididae) dispersal into Idaho seed potato fields to inform potato virus Y management.

Potato virus Y (PVY) is an aphid-transmitted pathogen that severely limits global potato production, especially in seed potato systems. Understanding the phenology and relative abundance of different aphid vector species should clarify seasonal PVY risk and allow optimization of timing of appropriate management tactics. This study aimed to characterize seasonal patterns of alate aphid activity in Idaho seed potato fields. Data were collected over 5 yr (2015, 2016, 2019, 2020, and 2021) using bucket traps to monitor alate aphid movement. Generalized additive mixed models were used to analyze th

A Qualitative Analysis of Choice-Driving Factors for Emergency Department Utilization Among Medicare Advantage Patients in Idaho.

BACKGROUND: Emergency department (ED) utilization among Medicare Advantage patients has been a growing concern. Many patients opt for ED visits, which can lead to overcrowding and increased healthcare costs. Understanding the underlying reasons for this preference is crucial for developing strategies to optimize healthcare delivery and reduce unnecessary ED visits. PURPOSE: The current project aimed to understand the reasons Medicare Advantage patients choose to seek care in the ED setting. METHODS: Patients completed interviews to understand drivers behind their choice to seek care in the E

From RAMP to Triplex RT-qPCR: Modernizing Arbovirus Surveillance and Confirming the First Aedes aegypti in Idaho.

West Nile virus (WNV) remains the most frequently reported locally acquired arboviral infection in the United States, yet many small and mid-sized mosquito abatement districts lack the diagnostic capacity and integrated data systems needed for rapid detection and response. The Canyon County Mosquito Abatement District (CCMAD) in southwestern Idaho undertook a multi-year capacity-building effort to expand arbovirus surveillance, standardize mosquito identification and pooling procedures, and implement triplex RT-qPCR testing for WNV, Western equine encephalitis virus (WEEV), and St. Louis encep

Elevated Body Temperature Associated with Ketamine Combinations during Capture of Gray Wolves (Canis lupus) in Idaho, USA.

Capture and handling of wildlife is essential to answering pertinent questions about ecology and biology. It is important to refine methods to increase animal welfare and safety. Gray wolves (Canis lupus) have been captured annually in Idaho, USA, for management or research purposes since their reintroduction in 1995-96. Two wolves died of hyperthermia during aerial darting in 2015. A retrospective analysis of 490 captures between 1999 and 2018 was conducted to identify factors that might contribute to the likelihood of hyperthermia (body temperature ≥41 C) when using anesthetic drugs in wolve

Hidden in the woods: A new species of Hexura (Araneae, Mygalomorphae, Antrodiaetidae) from a highly restricted range in Idaho.

A new species of Hexura Simon, 1885 is described from a very restricted geographic range in the Rocky Mountains of Idaho, 500 km east of the previously known distribution of the genus in the Coastal Ranges and western Cascade Mountains of Oregon and Washington. This work provides the first taxonomic information for this group in almost 50 years, including a phylogenomic framework for the genus within the mygalomorph superfamily Atypoidea, based on Ultraconserved elements (UCEs). Hexura vandal sp. nov. can be distinguished from the other two described species by a combination of morphological,

A new species of myxozoan (Myxosporea) from the brain and spinal cord of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) from Idaho.

A new species of Myxosporea, Myxobolus neurotropus n. sp., is described from the brain and spinal cord of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) from Duncan Creek, Owyhee County, Idaho. Spores are oval, have 2 pyriform polar capsules, and possess a thick spore wall (sutural rim) with a short intracapsular offshoot. The mean spore dimensions are length 11.8 microm, width 10.8 microm, and thickness 8.8 microm. This myxozoan is compared to other described Myxobolus species found in cranial tissues of salmonids in terms of spore morphology and phylogenetic analysis. Because it is found in brain and s

Associations of the Potato Psyllid and "Candidatus Liberibacter solanacearum" in Idaho with the Noncrop Host Plants Bittersweet Nightshade and Field Bindweed.

Zebra chip disease (ZC) in potato (Solanum tuberosum L. [Polemoniales: Solanaceae]) can produce unmarketable tubers with striped necrotic patterns. ZC is associated with the bacterium "Candidatus Liberibacter solanacearum" (Lso), which is transmitted by the potato psyllid, Bactericera cockerelli (Šulc) (Hemiptera: Triozidae). Potato psyllids are associated with numerous noncrop host plants, especially from the Solanaceae and Convolvulaceae; however, the contribution and importance of these hosts to ZC epidemiology in potato is poorly understood. To clarify seasonal phenologies on two such host
