For female adolescents with anorexia nervosa, body weight at admission as a predictor of treatment outcome in the day hospital setting was examined. A retrospective review of patient charts was completed to determine success or failure in the day hospital program based on weight above or below 85% of ideal body weight. There was not a greater risk of failure in the day hospital program for patients with ideal body weight below 85% compared to those patients with an ideal body weight of ≥ to 85%. Body weight did not predict day hospital success in adolescents with anorexia nervosa in this study

The effects of two kinds of calorie intake, 30 kcal and 60 kcal per kg of ideal body weight with the same amount of protein, on glucose tolerance and the metabolism of thyrotoxicosis was studied. A diet of 30 kcal per kg of ideal body weight was not sufficient for the thyrotoxicosis, and all the patients lost body weight. On a diet of 60 kcal per kg of ideal body weight, weight reduction was minimal and the urinary nitrogen and blood lactate levels increased. Insulin secretion also increased on a 60 kcal diet, but there was no deterioration of glucose tolerance even in cases of thyrotoxicosis

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) affects 12-21% of women in the childbearing age and is the most common cause of hyperandrogenaemia and anovulatory infertility. There is an increase in insulin resistance in both overweight and lean women with PCOS. Exercise treatment is mandatory among the overweight women due to sufficient evidence that it can improve the signs and symptoms of PCOS. This has not been fully investigated among the lean. However, new randomized controlled trials show that structured physical exercise can also improve insulin sensitivity, hyperandrogenaemia and menstrual frequenc

INTRODUCTION: Incorrect positioning of the body in space increases the tension of the myofascial tissue and overloads the skeleton. It is important to look for factors that affect the deterioration of body posture that could be eliminated. Understanding the interrelationship between the positioning of individual body segments should be the key knowledge for those involved in the prevention and correction of faulty body posture. The study aimed to determine the relationship between the degree of physiological curvatures of the spine and the incidence of incorrect knee position.

Assessment of ideal body weight in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients is important for clinical practice. Fluid overload may produce hypertension, reduced arterial distensibility, left ventricular hypertrophy. All these are risk factors for mortality in PD patients: cardio- and cerebrovascular events are the main causes of morbidity and mortality in PD population. Nowadays, a clear and widely accepted definition of ideal body weight in PD patients does not exist. Probably the ideal body weight is the weight at which the extra cellular volume is normal. Many different tools have been used to ass

Liposomal amphotericin B (LAmB) is used in the treatment of opportunistic fungal and parasitic infections, including leishmaniasis. Given its lack of known teratogenicity in pregnancy, LAmB is a preferred agent for treatment for these patients. However, significant gaps remain in determining optimal dosing regimens for LAmB in pregnancy. We describe the use of LAmB for a pregnant patient with mucocutaneous leishmaniasis (MCL) using a dosing strategy of 5 mg/kg/day for days 1-7 using ideal body weight followed by 4 mg/kg weekly using adjusted body weight. We reviewed the literature for LAmB dos

Women who enter pregnancy at a weight above or below normal weight, defined as a body mass index (BMI) of 18.5-24.9 (calculated as weight in kg/height in m2), are more likely to experience adverse pregnancy outcomes and to have infants who experience adverse health outcomes. For example, prepregnancy underweight (BMI <18.5) increases the risk for small-for-gestational-age births, whereas prepregnancy overweight (BMI 25.0-29.9) and obesity (BMI ≥30.0) increase risks for cesarean delivery, large-for-gestational-age births, and childhood obesity (1). Given these outcomes, Healthy People 2020 incl

OBJECTIVE: We examined weight dissatisfaction (actual weight minus self-stated ideal weight) and weight goal (normative weight minus self-stated ideal weight) subjective indices in a large clinical sample to determine how the indices discriminate between diagnostic categories and relate to other measures of body image disturbance.
METHOD: Approximately 200 anorexic, bulimic, and eating disorder not otherwise specified (NOS) participants reported their self-stated ideal weight and completed the Mizes Anorectic Cognitions (MAC) Questionnaire, Eating Disorders Inventory (EDI), and Restraint Scal

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to assess whether early menarche in normal-weight girls is associated with excess weight, abdominal obesity and metabolic changes at the end of sexual maturation.
SUBJECTS/METHODS: This is a cohort study of 255 normal-weight girls aged 10-18 years attending public schools in the city of Recife, Pernambuco, Northeast of Brazil. The following data were collected in 2007 and 2012: anthropometric; lifestyle, socioeconomic and demographic data; lipid profile; and self-assessed sexual maturation.
RESULTS: Eighty-four girls (32.9%) had early me

The authors assessed associations of body size perception and weight change over 13 years in black men and women and white men and women from the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) Study (1992-2005). The perceptions of self and ideal body size were measured by using the Stunkard 9-figure scale at the year 7 examination (1992-1993). Figures were classified into underweight, normal weight, overweight, and obese. Self-ideal discrepancy yielded 4 body size satisfaction categories. Body mass index (BMI) (measured at years 7, 10, 15, and 20) was the dependent variable in gende

BACKGROUND: We hypothesized that the use of actual body weight might lead to more frequent misdiagnosis of acute kidney injury (AKI) than when ideal body weight is used in underweight and/or obese patients. We examined which definition of body weight is most effective in establishing a urinary diagnosis of AKI in septic patients.
METHODS: Consecutive patients aged ≥ 20 years admitted to the intensive care unit of a university hospital between June 2011 and December 2016 were analyzed. Sepsis was defined in accordance with the Sepsis-3 criteria. AKI was defined as a urinary output of < 0.5 mL/

Adolescent girls with body dissatisfaction (N = 481, SD = 1.4) were randomized to a dissonance-based thin-ideal internalization reduction program, healthy weight control program, expressive writing control condition, or assessment-only control condition. Dissonance participants showed significantly greater decreases in thin-ideal internalization, body dissatisfaction, negative affect, eating disorder symptoms, and psychosocial impairment and lower risk for eating pathology onset through 2- to 3-year follow-up than did assessment-only controls. Dissonance participants showed greater decreases i

AIM: To investigate the relationship between maternal pre-pregnancy body-mass index (BMI) and neonatal birth weight.
METHODS: The observational study included 2906 mothers and their neonates born from 2005 to 2011 at the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics, Split University Hospital Center. Mothers with singleton term pregnancies who were overweight before pregnancy (BMI 25-29.9 kg/m2) were compared with those with normal pre-pregnancy weight (BMI 18.5-24.9 kg/m2). BMI change was assessed as a predictor of birth weight, categorized as small (SGA), appropriate (AGA), or large for gestation

Unfractionated heparin infusion therapy is often administered using a weight-based dosing strategy for the treatment of venous thromboembolism. In the last several decades, the prevalence of obesity in the United States has increased significantly. The applicability of weight-based heparin dosing recommendations in the obese and morbidly obese population is uncertain, as limited data are available. We describe a 388-kg man who was started on an intravenous infusion of heparin according to hospital protocol for suspected pulmonary embolism. The patient was given a 5000-unit heparin bolus follow

INTRODUCTION: We developed screening criteria to identify population health interventions with an equity focus for inclusion on the Public Health Agency of Canada's Canadian Best Practices Portal. We applied them to the area of "healthy weights," specifically, obesity prevention.
METHODS: We conducted a review of the literature and obtained input from expert external reviewers on changes to midstream environments. Interventions had to identify outcomes for groups with an underlying social disadvantage. We included papers with a focus on equity and vulnerable populations, intervention and/or e

The Broca formula was developed in 1871 by Pierre Paul Broca (a French Army Doctor) to help establish ideal body weight or normal body weight. Initially, the Broca Index (BI) was used to work out the normal weight but was later expanded to ideal Body Weight. Ideal Body weight (kg) = [Height (cm)-100]. The common methods used to explore the levels of adiposity include body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, skinfolds, bioelectrical impedance analysis, dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA), computerized tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Even though there have been sever

PURPOSE: Given shared risk and maintaining factors between eating disorders and obesity, it may be important to include both eating disorder intervention and healthy weight management within a universal eating disorder care delivery program. This study evaluated differential eating disorder screening responses by initial weight status among university students, to assess eating disorder risk and pathology among individuals with overweight/obesity versus normal weight or underweight.
METHODS: 1529 individuals were screened and analyzed. Screening was conducted via pilot implementation of the I

BACKGROUND: Rising rates of childhood obesity have become a pressing issue in public health, threatening both the mental and physical well-being of children. Attempts to address this problem are multifaceted, and in England include the National Child Measurement Programme (NCMP) which assesses weight status in English primary school children in reception class (aged 4-5) and in year 6 (aged 10-11), with results being sent out to parents. However the effectiveness and impact of this routine parental feedback has yet to be fully understood. This paper reports one component of a mixed methods stu
