First report and molecular identification of a reptilian tick, Amblyomma helvolum (Acari: Ixodidae), infesting wild green iguanas, Iguana iguana (Reptilia: Iguanidae), in southern Taiwan.

The genetic identity of the reptilian tick, Amblyomma helvolum, infesting wild green iguanas (Iguana iguana) in Taiwan, was examined. Genetic identity was determined by analyzing the 16S mitochondrial DNA gene sequences obtained from 11 Taiwan A. helvolum compared with other Amblyomma species, with two Dermacentor species and two Rhipicephalus species serving as outgroups. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that all the Taiwan specimens were genetically affiliated with a monophyletic group of A. helvolum and can be discriminated from other Amblyomma species. Our results provide the first genetic i

Steroid hormones and aggression in female Galápagos marine iguanas.

We studied steroid hormone patterns and aggression during breeding in female Galápagos marine iguanas (Amblyrhynchus cristatus). Females display vigorously towards courting males after copulating (female-male aggression), as well as fight for and defend nest sites against other females (female-female aggression). To understand the neuroendocrine basis of this aggressive behavior, we examined changes in testosterone (T), estradiol (E2), corticosterone (CORT), and progesterone (P4) during the mating and nesting periods, and then measured levels in nesting females captured during aggressive inter

Rapid prehistoric extinction of iguanas and birds in Polynesia.

The Tongoleleka archaeological site on Lifuka Island, Kingdom of Tonga, is a rich accumulation of pottery, marine mollusks, and nonhuman bones that represents first human contact on a small island in Remote Oceania approximately 2,850 years ago. The lower strata contain decorated Lapita-style pottery and bones of an extinct iguana (Brachylophus undescribed sp.) and numerous species of extinct birds. The upper strata instead feature Polynesian Plainware pottery and bones of extant species of vertebrates. A stratigraphic series of 20 accelerator-mass spectrometer radiocarbon dates on individual

Genome Complexity Reduction High-Throughput Genome Sequencing of Green Iguana (Iguana iguana) Reveal a Paradigm Shift in Understanding Sex-Chromosomal Linkages on Homomorphic X and Y Sex Chromosomes.

The majority of lizards classified in the superfamily Iguanoidea have an XX/XY sex-determination system in which sex-chromosomal linkage shows homology with chicken (Gallus gallus) chromosome 15 (GGA15). However, the genomics of sex chromosomes remain largely unexplored owing to the presence of homomorphic sex chromosomes in majority of the species. Recent advances in high-throughput genome complexity reduction sequencing provide an effective approach to the identification of sex-specific loci with both single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and restriction fragment presence/absence (PA), and

Oral fibrosarcoma in a black iguana (Ctenosaura pectinata).

A case of oral fibrosarcoma in a 13-yr-old male black iguana (Ctenosaura pectinata) is reported here. The iguana exhibited new tissue formation involving a large part of the maxilla and hard palate, which histologically and ultrastructurally corresponded to a primary fibrosarcoma of the oral cavity. Although there are reports of fibrosarcomas in other reptiles, such as snakes and crocodiles, no reports of this neoplasm in the oral cavity of an iguana were reported, which suggests that it is either infrequent or infrequently sampled for histological diagnosis. As an isolated case in an adult ig

Pasteurellosis in a spiny-tailed iguana (Ctenosaura pectinata).

This report describes the first fatal case of pasteurellosis caused by a probable novel Pasteurellaceae strain in a lizard. The case involved a 5-year-old male spiny-tailed iguana (Ctenosaura pectinata) exhibiting severe multifocal bacterial granulomatous myocarditis and pneumonia, along with marked congestive hepatomegaly and ascites associated with cardiac lesions. Bacterial proliferation was observed in the heart, lungs, and liver, suggesting hematogenous dissemination. Strain P25039, which is closely related to Pasteurella testudinis, Chelonobacter oris, and Testudinibacter aquarius, has b

Green iguana nephrology: a review of diagnostic techniques.

There is still much to learn about renal physiology and pathophysiology in reptiles. In the case of the green iguana, initiating causes are often inferred from poor husbandry and nutrition, or extrapolated from histopathologic interpretations made late in the course of the disease, or at postmortem. The link between parathyroid hormone and renal disease in humans has been well documented and, given the high prevalence of clinical (and subclinical) secondary nutritional hyperparathyroidism in iguanas, this certainly warrants further investigation in saurians [31,32,34,35]. Apart from hyperparat

Exotic pets are new allergenic sources: allergy to iguana.

Although furry animals are known sources of respiratory allergy, scaly animals are assumed not to be allergenic. Exotic animals such as iguanas are becoming increasingly common pets. Nevertheless, these animals are not suspected to be allergenic. We present the case of a 42-year-old woman suffering from allergic rhinoconjunctivitis and asthma caused by a pet iguana. Clear IgE-sensitization and respiratory allergy to iguana scales is demonstrated, suggesting that scaly pets should be taken into account as possible allergenic sources.

Exploring the stability of sex chromosome systems in Anolis and other iguanas.

Sex determination was once thought to be unstable in ectothermic vertebrates, but several highly diversified groups of non-avian reptiles, such as iguanas sensu lato (Pleurodonta), appear to have conserved sex chromosomes. However, this statement has been criticized as being based on a parsimonious conclusion from limited sampling. Here, we tested sex chromosome homology in a further 35 species of pleurodont lizards, mainly of the family Anolidae. We demonstrated sex chromosome homology based on the comparison of the gene dosage of X-specific genes by quantitative PCR. Including these new data

Locating Nesting Sites for Critically Endangered Galápagos Pink Land Iguanas (Conolophus marthae).

Invasive alien species control is recognized worldwide as a priority action to preserve global biodiversity. However, a lack of general life history knowledge for threatened species can impede the effectiveness of conservation actions. Galápagos pink land iguanas (Conolophus marthae) are endemic to Wolf Volcano, Galápagos, Ecuador. These iguanas are threatened by invasive alien species, particularly feral cats, that may affect their small population size. To guarantee the long-term survival of C. marthae, the Galápagos National Park Directorate is considering, along with an ongoing campaign of

In vivo locomotor strain in the hindlimb bones of alligator mississippiensis and iguana iguana: implications for the evolution of limb bone safety factor and non-sprawling limb posture.

Limb postures of terrestrial tetrapods span a continuum from sprawling to fully upright; however, most experimental investigations of locomotor mechanics have focused on mammals and ground-dwelling birds that employ parasagittal limb kinematics, leaving much of the diversity of tetrapod locomotor mechanics unexplored. This study reports measurements of in vivo locomotor strain from the limb bones of lizard (Iguana iguana) and crocodilian (Alligator mississippiensis) species, animals from previously unsampled phylogenetic lineages with non-parasagittal limb posture and kinematics. Circadian rhythm of iguana electroretinogram: the role of dopamine and melatonin.

The amplitude of the b-wave of the electroretinogram (ERG) varies with a circadian rhythm in the green iguana; the amplitude is high during the day(or subjective day) and low during the night (or subjective night). Dopamine and melatonin contents in the eye are robustly rhythmic under constant conditions; dopamine levels are high during the subjective day, and melatonin levels are high during the subjective night. Dopamine and melatonin affect the amplitude of the b-wave in an antagonistic and phase-dependent manner: dopamine D2-receptor agonists injected intraocularly during the subjective ni

Fine structural changes of bone cells in experimental nutritional osteodystrophy of green iguanas.

Lizards, especially iguanids and varanids, frequently develop nutritional osteodystrophy in captivity, but its pathogenesis is incompletely understood. Green iguanas fed an experimental diet low in calcium (0.2%) and adequate in phosphorus (1.1%) developed severe osteoporosis characterized by flattened inactive osteoblasts, marked resorption of endosteal bone by large multinucleated osteoclasts, and pronounced resorption of cortical bone by osteocytic osteolysis. Iguanas fed an experimental diet low in both calcium (0.1%) and phosphorus (0.2%) developed osteoporosis with osteomalacia character

Novel herpesvirus in the critically endangered Galapagos pink land iguana.

Virus surveillance in wildlife is important to understanding ecosystem health, taxonomy, and evolution. Nevertheless, viruses in reptiles, and specifically in squamates, continue to be understudied. Herein, we conducted a health assessment on the critically endangered Galapagos pink land iguana (Conolophus marthae) and the vulnerable Galapagos land iguana (Conolophus subcristatus). We collected oral and/or cloacal swabs from 47 clinically healthy iguanas and tested for adenovirus (cloacal swabs, n = 47) and herpesvirus (oral swabs, n = 45) using broad-spectrum PCRs. Two out of 38 (5.3 %) Galap
