Housing Programs for Homeless Individuals With Mental Illness: Effects on Housing and Mental Health Outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: This systematic review analyzed the best available research in the United States on permanent supportive housing programs for homeless individuals with mental illness and the effect of these programs on housing status and mental health. It updates older and broader reviews that included weaker studies or those that did not analyze permanent housing as an input and housing and mental health as primary outcomes. METHODS: The literature search (1980-2013) yielded 14 studies (randomized controlled trials and quasi-experimental studies). RESULTS: The studies found that a majority of pa

A Systems Approach to Homelessness Prevention for Older Adults.

An aging population and increase in the number of older adults experiencing homelessness in North America requires a more effective response to prevent and end older adult homelessness. While there are few research evidence-based policy solutions to preventing older adult homelessness, there are several promising practices that with further analysis could point to quality policy reform. Using the five-level typology by Fitzpatrick et al. (2021. Advancing a five-level typology of homelessness prevention. Addressing housing insecurity as a social determinant of health: A systematic review of interventions in healthcare settings.

BACKGROUND: Stable housing is a key social determinant of health. Those experiencing homelessness or housing insecurity are known to have increased healthcare utilization and yet worse healthcare outcomes compared to securely housed individuals. Housing interventions offered via healthcare settings provide an opportunity to reach this population. We conducted a systematic review to 1) identify interventions which address housing insecurity and engage healthcare settings; 2) determine effectiveness of these interventions; and 3) ascertain common characteristics of effective interventions to inf

Nowhere to go: exploring the social and economic influences on discharging people experiencing homelessness to appropriate destinations in Toronto, Canada.

OBJECTIVES: A main component of discharging patients from hospital is identifying an appropriate destination to meet their post-hospitalization needs. In Canada, meeting this goal is challenged when discharging people experiencing homelessness, who are frequently discharged to the streets or shelters. This study aimed to understand why and how the ability of hospital workers to find appropriate discharge destinations for homeless patients is influenced by dynamic social and economic contexts. METHODS: Guided by critical realism, we conducted semi-structured, in-depth interviews with 33 partic

The effectiveness of housing-based interventions and harm reduction among adults experiencing homelessness: a systematic review of recent controlled evidence (2019-2025).

Homelessness is a major public health and social issue, and research on the effectiveness of housing and harm reduction interventions provides fragmented findings that are difficult to compare across studies. The aim of this systematic review was to assess the effects of housing programmes (including Housing First) and alcohol harm reduction interventions among adults experiencing homelessness. Six databases (PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, PsycINFO, and the Cochrane Library) were searched, identifying 1385 records. After screening, 159 publications were assessed in full text, of which

Homelessness and Housing Insecurity: Challenges and Opportunities to Improve Care.

The Psychiatric Consultation Service at Massachusetts General Hospital sees medical and surgical inpatients with comorbid psychiatric symptoms and conditions. During their twice-weekly rounds, Dr Stern and other members of the Consultation Service discuss diagnosis and management of hospitalized patients with complex medical or surgical problems who also demonstrate psychiatric symptoms or conditions. These discussions have given rise to rounds reports that will prove useful for clinicians practicing at the interface of medicine and psychiatry. Prim Care Companion CNS Disord 2026;28(4):26f0418

Exploring a shared vision for success in permanent supportive housing: a community-partnered study in Colorado, USA.

In the United States and within Colorado, the number of persons experiencing homelessness has risen, with over 600,000 counted on a single night in 2023. Limited data integration across healthcare and social services hinders understanding of how permanent supportive housing (PSH) affects health outcomes. Our study in partnership with healthcare experts, housing providers, and a community advisory panel aimed to integrate data from health records, the justice system, and housing case manager notes to create a multidimensional measure of PSH success. Metrics not only included housing retention b

Providing Health Care to People Experiencing Homelessness: Strategies and Challenges for Cross-Sector Initiatives.

UNLABELLED: Policy Points Initiatives that effectively bridge health care and housing sectors in serving people experiencing homelessness (PEH) shared four dimensions: success in matching client preferences with readily achievable options, maintaining intensive interaction, initiating outreach where clients are, and co-locating health and housing services. Analyses of accounts of those with firsthand experience implementing cross-sector programs yielded valuable guidance on strategies for incorporating these dimensions. Changes in policies associated with the new federal administration may pos

Cancer care and treatment during homelessness.

People experiencing homelessness have not yet benefited from the substantial progress made in managing cancers, including advances in chemotherapy and radiotherapy, surgical interventions, multidisciplinary team approaches, and integrated cancer care models. People experiencing homelessness are at higher risks of developing cancers and their mortality due to cancer is twice that of the general population. Potential interventions to improve access to cancer treatment include alliances and active engagement with community organisations and shelters, cancer case management and peer-to-peer suppor

Higher Rates Of Homelessness Are Associated With Increases In Mortality From Accidental Drug And Alcohol Poisonings.

Alcohol and drug overdoses have multiple complex causes. In this article we contribute to the literature that links homelessness, the most extreme form of housing disruption, to accidental SUD-related poisonings. Using plausibly exogenous variation from a state's landlord-tenant policies that influence evictions, we estimated the causal impact of homelessness on SUD-related mortality. We found large effects of homelessness on SUD-related poisonings (for example, a 10 percent increase in homelessness led to a 3.2 percent increase in opioid poisonings in metropolitan areas). Our findings indicat

Automated identification of eviction status from electronic health record notes.

OBJECTIVE: Evictions are important social and behavioral determinants of health. Evictions are associated with a cascade of negative events that can lead to unemployment, housing insecurity/homelessness, long-term poverty, and mental health problems. In this study, we developed a natural language processing system to automatically detect eviction status from electronic health record (EHR) notes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We first defined eviction status (eviction presence and eviction period) and then annotated eviction status in 5000 EHR notes from the Veterans Health Administration (VHA). We d

Subjective housing stability in the transition away from homelessness.

Housing stability is a complex concept to measure. One set of factors under consideration are those based on a personal or subjective sense of stability. We explore the variables associated with subjective stability and explore how subjective stability relates to housing stability across time. We use data from longitudinal, mixed methods research with 85 young people exiting homelessness. We find that subjective stability is a meaningful construct that can be validated through qualitative and quantitative data. The construct is primarily linked to indicators of environmental and social wellbei

A Systematic Review of the Transition from Homelessness to Finding a Home.

Homelessness is associated with premature mortality, increased morbidity, and poor quality of life. Transitioning from homelessness to housing is a complex process, particularly for individuals with mental illness. This article presents a systematic review of 26 empirical studies exploring the transition of adults from homelessness to finding a home. Seven qualitative, 14 quantitative, and 5 mixed-method studies were critically appraised and synthesized yielding persistent qualitative themes such as maintaining stability, making adjustments, and a place called home, and quantitative key catego

The effectiveness of housing interventions and housing and service interventions on ending family homelessness: a systematic review.

Family homelessness has become a growing public health problem over the last 3 decades. Despite this trend, few studies have explored the effectiveness of housing interventions and housing and service interventions. The purpose of this systematic review is to appraise and synthesize evidence on effective interventions addressing family homelessness. We searched 10 major electronic databases from 2007 to 2013. Empirical studies investigating effectiveness of housing interventions and housing and service interventions for American homeless families regardless of publication status were eligible
