The illness behavior of patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease with and without endoscopic esophagitis.

The aim of this study was to determine if patients who experience heartburn but have no objective evidence of gastroesophageal reflux disease are responding appropriately to their symptoms. One hundred and forty patients who had been referred for investigations of heartburn (75 males, 65 females, mean age 48 years) answered an Illness Behavior Questionnaire. All patients underwent pH monitoring tests, and endoscopy results were obtained for 119 patients. There was objective evidence of reflux disease on endoscopy or pH monitoring in 105 patients and no objective evidence of reflux in 35 patien

HIV risk behavior of psychiatric patients with mental illness: a sample of Brazilian patients.

OBJECTIVE: The prevalence of HIV among psychiatric patients is higher than general population rates worldwide. Many risk behaviors have been identified in studies from both developing and developed countries, though sampling limitations restrict the generalizability of their results. The objective of this study was to report findings from the first national sample of psychiatric patients about lifetime practice of unsafe sex and associated factors. METHOD: A national multicenter sample of adults with mental illness was randomly selected from 26 public mental health institutions throughout Bra

A behavioral economic perspective on smoking persistence in serious mental illness.

Serious mental illness (SMI) is associated with disproportionately high rates of cigarette smoking. The identification of factors that contribute to persistent smoking in people with SMI may lead to the development and adoption of tobacco control policies and treatment approaches that help these smokers quit. This commentary examines factors underlying smoking persistence in people with SMI from the perspective of behavioral economics, a discipline that applies economic principles to understanding drug abuse and dependence. Studies, conducted in the Northeastern US within the past 30years, tha

Sexual behavior of homeless mentally ill men at risk for HIV.

OBJECTIVE: The authors investigated sexual behaviors related to HIV transmission among homeless mentally ill men in a New York City shelter. A previous study of a similar population found HIV prevalence to be 19%. METHODS: In standardized interviews with 122 men, data on sexual behaviors for the previous 6 months were collected. The frequency and nature of sexual episodes that may facilitate HIV transmission were examined. In addition, sexual risk behaviors among broadly defined diagnostic groups were compared. RESULTS: Of the 122 men, 65 (53%) had sex, 56 with women and 20 with men (11 who

The Relationship between Lifestyle Behaviors and Mental Illness in Women in College.

Women, particularly those in college, have the highest prevalence of any mental illness (MI), which negatively impacts social connection, academic performance, and health. Research into alternative treatment methods suggests that lifestyle behaviors are safer and more effective than medication at reducing MI symptoms. This study explores the relationship between lifestyle behaviors and MI in college women through an online survey. The survey included a food frequency questionnaire (Diet History Questionnaire II) and questions about lifestyle behaviors, symptoms of MI, and sociodemographic info

Pharmacologic management of behavioral instability in medically ill pediatric patients.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Behavioral instability in children and adolescents is a vexing problem faced by many clinicians. This dilemma is magnified when it presents in a child with an acute medical condition. Effective treatment in these cases with medications may help to reduce morbidity and facilitate appropriate medical care for the underlying condition. RECENT FINDINGS: There are many reviews, but few studies examine the treatment of behavioral instability in the pediatric population. There are even fewer that address behavioral instability in the presence of a comorbid medical condition. Many

Cognitive/behavioral therapy of anxiety in the medically ill: cardiac settings.

Anxiety appears to be a strong risk factor for ischemic heart disease (IHD) and specifically fatal IHD. However, no randomly assigned, controlled, clinical trial targeting anxiety yet exists demonstrating an impact on objective cardiac outcomes. Situational anxiety is frequent in cardiac populations and can diminish quality-of-life by increasing symptoms/disability and result in unnecessary medical system utilization. "Noncardiac" chest pain is common both in patients with objective coronary disease and in patients whose cardiac workup is negative. Both presentations of chest pain respond to c

Sexually inappropriate behaviors in seriously mentally ill children and adolescents.

This study examined the prevalence and clinical correlates of sexually inappropriate behaviors in all youth treated at a tertiary care public sector psychiatric hospital over a 5-year period. A retrospective chart review was completed on 499 subjects. Subjects were grouped in four mutually exclusive categories: no inappropriate sexual behaviors (n = 296), hypersexual (n = 82), exposing (n = 39) and victimizing (n = 82) behaviors. Those with histories of sexually inappropriate behaviors had much higher rates of being sexually abused (82 vs. 36%), and also had higher rates of physical abuse and

Parental Mental Illness, Borderline Personality Disorder, and Parenting Behavior: The Moderating Role of Social Support.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Parental mental disorders, particularly borderline personality disorder (BPD), impair parenting behavior. Consequently, the children exhibit an elevated risk for psychopathology across their lifespan. Social support for parents is thought to moderate the relationship between parental mental illness and parenting behavior. It may dampen negative effects and serve as starting point for preventive interventions. This paper provides a literature overview regarding the impact of social support on the sequelae of parental mental illness and BPD for parenting behavior. RECENT FIND

Knowledge, perceptions and health behavior pertaining to Schistosoma mansoni related illness in Machakos district, Kenya.

This study on indigenous knowledge, preferences and health behavior among households and traditional healers in an area endemic Schistosomiasis mansoni in central Kenya showed that the population used modern and traditional health services interchangeably for intestinal illness with similar results. Cultural, economic and social factors in the utilization of different health services were identified. Antischistosomal treatment in the study population resulted in higher cure rates than those observed either hospital and health center treatment or the use of herbal medicines. Kamba knowledge and

Influence of individual illness perception on readiness to change behavior in patients with anorexia nervosa.

BACKGROUND: Treating patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) is generally prolonged or often ineffective. A key factor influencing treatment is the high level of ambivalence patients feel regarding the necessary behavioral changes. We examined the trajectories of patients' readiness to change throughout their inpatient stay, considering the influence of their illness perceptions. METHODS: Data from clinical routine monitoring at the Department of Psychosomatic Medicine at Medical University Innsbruck, collected between 2015 and 2024, were analyzed. Monitoring included questionnaires assessing rea

Sexual risk behavior among persons dually diagnosed with severe mental illness and substance use disorder.

Persons dually diagnosed with severe mental illness (SMI) and substance use disorder (SUD) have disproportionately high rates of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). This study examined the relationship between multiple sexual risk behaviors among persons with active, remitted, and no SUD. Participants were 152 adults with SMI recruited from multiple treatment sites. A structured interview assessed the participants' psychiatric, psychosocial, and behavioral factors. Rates of sexual risk behavior in the past 3 months were high and differed across the SUD groups. Multivariate lo

Psychological factors in functional gastrointestinal disorders: characteristics of the disorder or of the illness behavior?

OBJECTIVE: This study examines factors affecting the frequency of physician consultations by individuals with functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGD) in a group of subjects with functional dyspepsia or irritable bowel syndrome. Systematic selection of persons who were already seeing a physician for one of these problems was avoided by conducting an epidemiological field study rather than a clinical study. METHODS: A representative sample of the German population (N=2201) completed a questionnaire that included, in addition to the criterion (number of physician visits in the past 12 months
