Progressive addition lenses (PALs) are ophthalmic lenses to correct presbyopia by providing improvements of near and far vision in different areas of the lens, but distorting the periphery of the wearer's field of view. Distortion-related difficulties reported by PAL wearers include unnatural self-motion perception. Visual self-motion perception is guided by optic flow, the pattern of retinal motion produced by self-motion. We tested the influence of PAL distortions on optic flow-based heading estimation using a model of heading perception and a virtual reality-based psychophysical experiment.

A patient without a previous history of seizures had a generalized tonic-clonic seizure followed by multiple complex visual hallucinations and illusions (CVHIs) lasting weeks. The patient reported a total of 19 different CVHIs. EEGs performed revealed rhythmic right temporal activity occurring only during the CVHIs. Treatment with antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) resolved the CVHIs and normalized the EEG. An attempt at discontinuation of one AED resulted in a resurgence of the CVHIs and EEG abnormality.

Illusory motion of the unseen stationary forearm can be elicited by vibration of the biceps brachii or triceps brachii muscle. We have studied in 12 individuals how sight of part of the arm alone or in relation to other objects affects such vibration-induced, illusory motion of the forearm.
