Teaching Manual Signs to Adults With Mental Retardation Using Matching-to-Sample Procedures and Stimulus Equivalence.

The objective of this study was to teach manual signs through an automated matching-to-sample procedure and to test for the emergence of new conditional relations and imitative behaviors. Seven adults with mild to severe mental retardation participated. Four were also hearing impaired. Relations between manual signs (set A) and pictures (set B) were initially taught, followed by the training of corresponding printed words (set C) and pictures (set B). Further presentations of conditional discriminations tested for the emergence of AC, followed by tests for the emergence of imitative signing be

Associations Between Types of Imitation and Receptive and Expressive Language Skills in Preschoolers With Autism.

PURPOSE: Imitation and language are associated in autistic children. However, imitation involves various types. This cross-sectional study examined the associations between different imitation abilities and receptive and expressive language skills in autistic preschoolers while controlling for nonverbal IQ (NVIQ). Additionally, these associations were explored separately in two subgroups based on language level. METHOD: A sample of 176 autistic preschoolers, aged 2-6 years, was assessed using (semi)structured behavioral tasks measuring imitation (elicited object, gestural, and verbal imitatio

IBCB: Efficient Inverse Batched Contextual Bandit for Behavioral Evolution History.

Traditional imitation learning focuses on modeling the behavioral mechanisms of experts, which requires a large amount of interaction history generated by some fixed expert. However, in many streaming applications, such as streaming recommender systems, online decision-makers typically engage in online learning during the decision-making process, meaning that the interaction history generated by online decision-makers includes their behavioral evolution from novice expert to experienced expert. This poses a new challenge for existing imitation learning approaches that can only utilize data fro

If I told you everyone picked that (non-affordant) tool, would you? Children attend to conventional language when imitating and transmitting tool use.

This study explored how conventional versus instrumental language influenced children's imitation and transmission of non-affordant tool use. Rather than examining children's imitation of unnecessary actions that do not impede goal completion, we examined children's conformity with a modeled behavior that may result in sacrificing goal completion. Children (N = 96 4- to 6-year-olds) were presented with either a conventional or instrumental description of a model's actions before watching the model choose a non-affordant tool. Children who heard conventional language imitated and transmitted th

Neural representations involved in observed, imagined, and imitated actions are dissociable and hierarchically organized.

The fact that action observation, motor imagery and execution are associated with partially overlapping increases in parieto-frontal areas has been interpreted as evidence for reliance of these behaviors on a common system of motor representations. However, studies that include all three conditions within a single paradigm are rare, and consequently, there is a dearth of knowledge concerning the distinct mechanisms involved in these functions. Here we report key differences in neural representations subserving observation, imagery, and synchronous imitation of a repetitive bimanual finger-tapp

Cerebral correlates of imitation of intransitive gestures: An integrative review of neuroimaging data and brain lesion studies.

The aim of the present review is to investigate the cerebral correlates, more particularly the role of the parietal lobe, when imitating intransitive gestures, a task highly sensitive to apraxic errors. By providing an integrative review of functional imaging and brain lesion studies, we focused our attention on the meaning of gestures (meaningful and meaningless) and the body parts (finger and hand). We found that imitation of intransitive gestures is relying upon a bilateral brain network including fronto-parietal areas irrespective of meaning or body parts. Moreover, we observed that while

Imitate that one: dolphins spontaneously interpret human pointing gesture in a novel context.

Understanding whether non-human animals interpret human pointing as cooperative communication remains a central question in comparative cognition. Pointing is a foundational aspect of human communication, yet success in traditional object-choice tasks could theoretically reflect conditioned responses rather than comprehension of communicative intent. Recent work therefore focuses on testing flexible, spontaneous use of gestures in novel contexts. Here, we examined whether bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) could interpret a human point to solve a new problem in a modified "do-as-I-do" ta

Thymic mimicry: The art of imitation.

Display of tissue self-antigens within the thymus is critical for the regulation of self-reactive T cells. In this issue of JEM, Michelson et al. (2023. J. Exp. Med.https://doi.org/10.1084/jem.20230461) continue to advance our understanding of self-antigen representation by medullary thymic epithelial cells, identifying a new role for Hnf4γ in the regulation of thymic mimetic cells as well as their peripheral counterparts.

The autocracy of meaning: Intact visuo-imitative processes may not compensate for meaningful gestures.

The dual-route models of action distinguish between a semantic and a non-semantic visuo-motor route to execute different types of gestures. Despite the large amount of evidence in support to the model, some aspects are debated. One issue concerns the recruitment of the visuo-motor route to correctly execute meaningful gestures when the semantic route is damaged. Debated predictions of the dual-route model were investigated in a sample of 32 patients with left hemisphere stroke lesions compared to 27 healthy controls. Group analysis showed that patients were equally impaired on meaningful and m

Neural activation during imitation with or without performance feedback: An fMRI study.

In our daily lives, we often receive performance feedback (PF) during imitative learning, and we adjust our behaviors accordingly to improve performance. However, little is known regarding the neural mechanisms underlying this learning process. We hypothesized that appropriate PF would enhance neural activation or recruit additional brain areas during subsequent action imitation. Pictures of 20 different finger gestures without any social meaning were shown to participants from the first-person perspective. Imitation with or without PF was investigated by functional magnetic resonance imaging

Resonance behaviors and mirror neurons.

This article is subdivided into two parts. In the first part we review the properties of a particular class of premotor neurons, the "mirror" neurons. With this term we define neurons that discharge both when the monkey makes a particular action and when it observes another individual (monkey or human) making a similar action. The second part is an attempt to give a neurophysiological account of the mechanisms underlying behaviors where an individual reproduces, overtly or internally, movements or actions made by another individual. We will refer to these behaviors as "resonance behaviors". We

Prenatal behavioral contagion through maternal yawning and fetal resonance.

Yawning is a phylogenetically preserved and highly stereotyped behavior observed across vertebrates.1 In humans, it emerges early in development, as it is already present prenatally.2,3 Qualitative studies show that fetal yawns display a structured motor pattern closely resembling adult yawns, suggesting a role in early sensorimotor organization,4,5 and they have been proposed to support the maturation of brainstem central pattern generators and early synaptic development.6,7 Due to its early emergence in development, prenatal yawning has largely been interpreted as driven by endogenous progra

Non-fluent aphasia and neural reorganization after speech therapy: insights from human sleep electrophysiology and functional magnetic resonance imaging.

Stroke is associated with long-term functional deficits. Behavioral interventions are often effective in promoting functional recovery and plastic changes. Recent studies in normal subjects have shown that sleep, and particularly slow wave activity (SWA), is tied to local brain plasticity and may be used as a sensitive marker of local cortical reorganization after stroke. In a pilot study, we assessed the local changes induced by a single exposure to a therapeutic session of IMITATE (Intensive Mouth Imitation and Talking for Aphasia Therapeutic Effects), a behavioral therapy used for recovery

The role of know-how copying in and beyond social tinkering.

Stage 2 of Chater and Christiansen's (henceforth CC) model involves the ability to copy. Our comment concerns not the order of copying in CC's model, but their time estimate of its origins. CC treat copying as present in apes and implied by early stone tools, and hence (presumably) had by the last common ancestor. Here we argue for a later onset.

Contagious yawning is stronger in wolves than in dog-admixed wolves.

Behavioural contagion occurs when the behaviour of one individual elicits the same behaviour in another individual observing the event, and it is considered one of the fundamental mechanisms promoting group coordination and cohesion in social species, including humans. Empirical research on behavioural contagion has focused primarily on yawning and has shown evidence of it in several animal species. Here, we studied behavioural contagion in 2 groups of captive wolves (N = 20) and 3 groups of captive dog-admixed wolves (N = 13). We conducted behavioural observations of naturally occurring yawni

Failure in pantomime action execution correlates with the severity of social behavior deficits in children with autism: a praxis study.

Here we describe the performance of children with autism, their siblings, and typically developing children using the Florida Apraxia Battery. Children with autism showed the lowest performance in all sections of the test. They were mostly impaired in pantomime actions execution on imitation and on verbal command, and in imitation of meaningless gestures. Interestingly, a correlation was found between performance in pantomime actions and the severity of social behavior deficits. We conclude that the presence of a rigid internal model prevents the execution of an exact copy of the observed pant

Exploring Virtual Doppelgangers as Movement Models to Enhance Voluntary Imitation.

Virtual Reality (VR) setups offer the possibility to investigate interactions between model and observer characteristics in imitation behavior, such as in the chameleon effect of automatic mimicry. We tested the hypothesis that perceived affiliative characteristics of a virtual model, such as similarity to the observer and likability, will facilitate observers' engagement in voluntary motor imitation. In a within-subjects design, participants were exposed to four virtual characters of different degrees of realism and observer similarity (avatar numbers AN=1-4), ranging from an abstract stickpe

Bayesian evidence for the neural dissociation between finger and hand imitation skills.

For limb apraxia-a heterogeneous disorder of higher motor cognition following stroke-an enduring debate has arisen regarding the existence of dissociating neural correlates for finger and hand gestures in the left hemisphere. We re-assessed this question asking whether previous attempts analyzing pooled samples of patients with deficits in only one and patients with deficits in both imitation types might have led to systematically biased results. We conducted frequentist and Bayesian, voxelwise, and regionwise lesion symptom mappings on (i) the full sample (N = 96) in which all patients with h
