Dietary β-Glucan From the Marine Diatom Chaetoceros muelleri Enhances Immune Responses and Resistance of Nile Tilapia to Tilapia Lake Virus Infection.

This study evaluated the immunomodulatory effects of dietary β-glucan derived from the marine diatom Chaetoceros muelleri on immune responses and survival of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) following Tilapia Lake Virus (TiLV) infection. Juvenile tilapias were fed diets supplemented with 0.1% or 0.2% β-glucan for 14 days prior to viral challenge. Fish were subsequently challenged with TiLV and immune-related gene expression was analysed in spleen and liver tissues. Fish fed the 0.1% β-glucan diet showed significantly lower cumulative mortality (26.67%) compared with the control group (55.5

Immunostimulatory effects of dietary fucoidan from Padina boergesenii on growth, digestive performance, immune response and transcription of immune-related genes in Channa striata and disease resistance to Aeromonas hydrophila.

The objective of this research was to evaluate the antibacterial properties against Aeromonas hydrophila and histological responses, immunological mechanisms, gene expression and disease resistance in Channa striata. The fish were separated into five groups and given meals with various amounts of fucoidan diet (0%, 0.5%, 1.5%, 2.5%, and 3.5%) for 45 days. The study's findings show that adding 2.5% fucoidan to the diet resulted in a significant improvement in the final weight, weight gain, and specific growth rate (SGR) of C. striata. Furthermore, the feed conversion ratio (FCR) decreased signi

A dietary sulfated polysaccharide from edible green alga Caulerpa chemnitzia modulates immune responses associated with host metabolism and gut microbiota in cyclophosphamide-induced immunosuppressed mice.

Sulfated polysaccharides from edible marine algae have attracted increasing interest as dietary components with immune-supporting potential. Caulerpa chemnitzia, an edible green alga widely distributed in Indo-Pacific regions, has long been consumed fresh as a vegetable and is rich in sulfated polysaccharides. In our previous study, a sulfated polysaccharide fraction (CRVP) isolated from the edible green alga Caulerpa chemnitzia was structurally characterized and shown to regulate macrophage immune responses in vitro. However, its in vivo immunomodulatory effects and functional relevance as a

Postoperative nutrition in the setting of enhanced recovery programmes.

Patients undergoing major surgery for gastrointestinal cancer are at high risk of developing or worsening malnutrition and sarcopenia. In malnourished patients, preoperative nutritional support may not be sufficient and so postoperative support is advised. This narrative review addresses several aspects of postoperative nutritional care in the setting of enhanced recovery programmes. Early oral feeding, therapeutic diet, oral nutritional supplements, immunonutrition, and probiotics are discussed. When postoperative intake is insufficient, nutritional support favouring the enteral route is reco

[Calories, proteins - what does the intensive care patient need?].

It is increasingly recognized that the nutrition of critically ill patients is a highly complex activity with many unanswered questions. Much research has been performed showing that early enteral nutrition helps to avoid complications. In addition, it has already been shown that the calorie goal as the sole diet goal rather plays a minor role, if one pays attention to sufficient supply of proteins. The diet of the different patient groups with their very individual physiological conditions and their very different diseases are another difficile question in nutritional therapy. The question ab

Immunomodulatory and histopathological effects of dietary lauric and benzoic acids on deltamethrin-induced mucosal immune disruptions in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus).

Deltamethrin (DLM), a pyrethroid insecticide and common aquatic contaminant, impairs immunity in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). This study evaluated the protective effects of lauric acid (LA) and benzoic acid (BA), both individually and in combination, against DLM-induced mucosal injury and immunosuppression. One hundred fifty juvenile Nile tilapia were distributed into five groups: a negative control, a positive control (DLM group) for 60 days, and three groups pre-fed with either 1 g/kg lauric acid, 1 g/kg benzoic acid, or their combination for 30 days prior to a subsequent 30-day DLM

The role of diet in the prevention and treatment of Inflammatory Bowel Diseases.

Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) - Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) - are chronic conditions characterised by relapsing inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. They represent an increasing public health concern and an aetiological enigma due to unknown causal factors. The current knowledge on the pathogenesis of IBD is that genetically susceptible individuals develop intolerance to a dysregulated gut microflora (dysbiosis) and chronic inflammation develops as a result of environmental triggers. Among the environmental factors associated with IBD, diet plays an important ro

Dietary myo-inositol exerts pleiotropic effects on T cell activation, antioxidant defense and fatty acid metabolism to enhance anti-bacterial immunity in tilapia.

Bacterial diseases cause major economic losses in aquaculture, underscoring the need for feed additives that enhance fish immunity. Myo-inositol (MI), an essential nutrient for fish growth, possesses antioxidant and lipid-metabolism modulating properties. However, the role of MI in regulating T cell function remains unclear. In this study, Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) individuals were fed diets containing 850 or 1700 mg/kg MI to evaluate its effects on T cell immunity. The results demonstrated that dietary MI at 850 mg/kg significantly enhanced host anti-bacterial immunity in Nile tila

Dietary lutein mitigates high fat diet and lipopolysaccharide induced intestinal barrier dysfunction and immune inflammatory responses in juvenile black seabream (Acanthopagrus schlegelii).

High-fat diets (HFDs) can impair intestinal homeostasis and innate immune function in fish, whereas nutritional immunomodulation may provide an effective strategy to improve immune response to LPS challenge in aquaculture species. This study investigated whether dietary lutein (LU) alleviates HFD-induced immune dysfunction and improves the response of juvenile black seabream (Acanthopagrus schlegelii) to lipopolysaccharide (LPS) challenge. Fish were fed a normal-fat diet containing 8% lipid, an HFD containing 18% lipid, or the HFD supplemented with 0.125%, 0.25% and 0.50% LU for 10 weeks, foll

Diet, Gut Microbiome and Epigenetics: Emerging Links with Inflammatory Bowel Diseases and Prospects for Management and Prevention.

Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) represent a growing public health concern due to increasing incidence worldwide. The current notion on the pathogenesis of IBD is that genetically susceptible individuals develop intolerance to dysregulated gut microflora (dysbiosis) and chronic inflammation develops as a result of environmental triggers. Among the environmental factors associated with IBD, diet plays an important role in modulating the gut microbiome, influencing epigenetic changes, and, therefore, could be applied as a therapeutic tool to improve the disease course. Nevertheless, the current

Perioperative administration of fucoidan induced changes in immune cell composition and resulted in no beneficiary outcomes in the acute phase of postoperative neurocognitive recovery.

For many of the versatile functions of polysaccharides as natural ingredients in human foods, the immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory activities of fucoidan, partly owing to its high sulfate content, attracted extensive attention in its potential application in cancer therapy as well as in prevention of neurodegeneration. In this study, we characterized the impact of long-term supplementation of Undaria pinnatifida-derived fucoidan on the gene expression and immune cell abundance in mouse PBMCs. Despite the significantly increased Th17 cells and activated NK cells, naïve B cells were substa

The impact of enteral immunonutrition on gut microbiota in colorectal cancer and gastric cancer patients in the preoperative period-preliminary results of randomized clinical trial.

INTRODUCTION: Immunonutrition is a part of nutritional interventions in gastrointestinal cancer patients. It seems to be especially important in the preoperative period to reduce, among others, surgery-related complications. The relation between the immune system and gut microbiota has been previously analyzed. However, the influence of immunonutrients on the composition of gut microbiota is still unclear. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the impact of enteral immunonutrition on gut microbiota in gastric/colorectal cancer patients in the preoperative period. PATIENTS AND METHODS

Fish Oil-Containing Injectable Lipid Emulsions in Parenteral Nutrition: Immunomodulation and Clinical Outcomes in Critically Ill Patients-Narrative Review.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Injectable lipid emulsions are an integral component of parenteral nutrition, providing energy as well as essential fatty acids. However, conventional soybean oil-based emulsions, which are rich in omega-6 fatty acids, are associated with a risk of exacerbating pro-inflammatory responses and immunosuppression, which is of particular importance in critically ill patients. The aim of this review is to present the significance of the composition of modern injectable lipid emulsions, with particular emphasis on emulsions containing fish oil as a source of omega-3 fatty acids (

Perioperative Immunonutrition for Elective Surgery: Review of Mechanisms, Summary of Evidence, and Future Directions.

Surgical trauma triggers a complex metabolic and inflammatory response that can profoundly affect patient recovery and clinical outcomes. The magnitude of this stress response correlates with surgical complexity, patient comorbidities, and baseline nutritional status. Immunonutrition refers to the strategic use of specific nutrients, including arginine, glutamine, omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, and nucleotides, to modulate immune and inflammatory responses beyond their basic nutritional value. These pharmaconutrients possess distinct immunomodulatory properties that may attenuate surgica

Nutritional Challenges and Strategies in Obese Critically Ill Patients with Gynecological Cancer: A Narrative Review.

Critically ill obese patients with gynecological cancer represent a high-risk population with complex nutritional needs. Although excess adiposity may suggest adequate energy reserves, it often conceals sarcopenia, micronutrient deficiencies, and functional malnutrition, contributing to impaired wound healing, immune dysfunction, prolonged mechanical ventilation, increased susceptibility to infections, and adverse oncologic outcomes. Obesity-associated inflammation, insulin resistance, and tumor-driven catabolism further exacerbate metabolic stress and complicate nutritional management in the
