Warming-driven shifts in floral traits generate flower-pollinator size mismatch and decrease reproductive output.

Plant-pollinator interactions are essential for maintaining pollination services but may be sensitive to disruption from climate change. Higher temperatures can reduce flower size, nectar availability, and other floral traits, and shorten pollinator tongue and increase body size. This could, in turn, reduce flower-pollinator size matching, leading to difficulties accessing nectar and effectively transferring pollen between flowers. However, the effects of climate change on plant-pollinator trait matching are rarely experimentally tested. We conducted a 2-year simulated warming experiment and a

Spatial partitioning of floral volatiles provides a "chemosensory roadmap" for bumblebee pollinators.

How do plants with structurally complex flowers promote effective pollination? From the pollinator's perspective, complex flowers can be reimagined as mechanical puzzles that require the manipulation of a 3D object in search of a concealed reward.1 The spatial partitioning of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) within flowers may help flower-naive pollinators to successfully complete such puzzles, thereby increasing their foraging proficiency and, from the plant's perspective, promoting flower constancy and pollination efficiency.2,3 Here, we construct "chemosensory roadmaps" for Impatiens capen

Anti-inflammatory effects of cavidine in vitro and in vivo, a selective COX-2 inhibitor in LPS-induced peritoneal macrophages of mouse.

Cavidine is an isoquinoline alkaloid which is isolated from Corydalis impatiens. In traditional Tibetan herb, C. impatiens has been widely used for treatment of skin injuries, hepatitis, cholecystitis, and scabies. The present study aimed to evaluate its anti-inflammatory effect and investigate the mechanisms underlying this anti-inflammatory action. We used different inflammation model animals and lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced murine peritoneal macrophages to examine the anti-inflammatory function of cavidine. Results indicated pretreatment with cavidine (i.p.) decreased xylene-induced ear

[The colonization of plants by Yersinia pestis EV in an experiment].

The penetration of Y. pestis (strain EV) into the stem of Impatiens walleriana via its roots, submerged into microbial suspension, was observed under experimental conditions. This was indicative of the colonization of plants by Y. pestis, thus confirming the possibility of their preservation in plants during periods between epizootics at the territories of natural foci.

Unveiling the submerged secrets: bumblebee queens' resilience to flooding.

In a previous study, an experimental oversight led to the accumulation of water filling a container housing diapausing bumblebee queens. Surprisingly, after draining the water, queens were found to be alive. This observation raises a compelling question: can bumblebee queens endure periods of inundation while overwintering underground? To address this question, we conducted an experiment using 143 common eastern bumblebee (Bombus impatiens) queens placed in soil-filled tubes and subjected to artificially induced diapause in a refrigerated unit for 7 days. Tap water was then added to the tubes

Herbivory and relative growth rates of Pieris rapae are correlated with host constitutive salicylic acid and flowering time.

Treatment of plants with exogenous salicylic acid (SA) improves resistance to many bacterial pathogens, but can suppress resistance to insect herbivores. While plants vary naturally in constitutive SA, whether such differences are predictive of resistance to insect herbivores has not been studied previously. We examined the possible role of this endogenous SA in structuring the interactions between the cabbage white butterfly, Pieris rapae, and ten hosts in the mustard family (Brassicaceae). Because P. rapae has multiple generations that utilize different hosts across the year, we included fiv

Invasive Plants as a Source of Polyphenols with High Radical Scavenging Activity.

The wide occurrence and expansive nature of invasive plant species are worldwide problems because these plants by their competitive character can lead to the loss of biodiversity. As a result, they significantly disrupt ecosystems, create economic damage and threats to human health, and diminish the quality of recreational resources. Therefore, sustainable, bio-based solutions are needed for their control, focusing on the utilization of their biomass after eradication. To better understand the potential application possibilities of invasive plants and their potential role in bioeconomy, specie

Possible Synergistic Effects of Thymol and Nicotine Against Crithidia bombi Parasitism in Bumble Bees.

Floral nectar contains secondary compounds with antimicrobial properties that can affect not only plant-pollinator interactions, but also interactions between pollinators and their parasites. Although recent work has shown that consumption of plant secondary compounds can reduce pollinator parasite loads, little is known about the effects of dosage or compound combinations. We used the generalist pollinator Bombus impatiens and its obligate gut parasite Crithidia bombi to study the effects of nectar chemistry on host-parasite interactions. In two experiments we tested (1) whether the secondary

Linking vector biology, transmission, and genome architecture in southeastern orthotospoviruses.

Orthotospoviruses remain major threats to specialty and row crops in the southeastern United States through thrips-borne, persistent-propagative transmission. We synthesize the emergence and biology of tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) and soybean vein necrosis virus (SVNV), with context from impatiens necrotic spot virus, groundnut ringspot virus, and tomato chlorotic spot virus (TCSV). TSWV has a broad host range and global importance, whereas SVNV has a narrower known host range but continues to expand across soybean-producing regions. Comparative genomic analyses suggest distinct evolutiona

Bumblebees use and repair artificial honeypots.

Insects have long been known to show flexibility when building structures, including the ability to modify and repair them, and incorporate novel materials1. Even honeybee (Apis mellifera) nest cells, known for their highly stereotyped hexagonal geometry, can diverge from this shape2 and be altered by workers3. Compared to those of honeybees, bumblebee (Bombus spp.) nests have been described as "seemingly haphazard"1; found in a variety of cavity types1, they show variation in the size and location of honeypots and other objects built to rear brood of various sizes (Figure 1A). This natural va

Diapausing bumble bee queens avoid drowning by using underwater respiration, anaerobic metabolism and profound metabolic depression.

Overwintering bumble bee queens enter a state of diapause, remaining buried underground until spring. Remarkably, queens of the common eastern bumble bee (Bombus impatiens) can survive complete submersion for at least one week. We investigated the physiological mechanisms enabling this tolerance, testing the hypothesis that submerged diapausing queens rely on both underwater respiration and anaerobic metabolism for survival. Using respirometry, we detected low but consistent CO2 production during submersion, persisting through 4 and 8 days under water. Underwater gas exchange, measured from CO

Conserved and Unique Protein Expression Patterns Across Reproductive Stage Transitions in Social Hymenopteran Queens.

Hymenopteran queens are collectively highly fecund, often long-lived individuals that undergo dramatic physiological changes after they mate and establish a nest. However, the degree to which these changes are conserved among species with different life histories is not well-defined. We conducted a comparative proteomic study investigating differences between reproductive stages (virgin, mated and established queens) of Apis mellifera, Bombus impatiens, B. terrestris and Lasius niger. We analysed haemolymph for all species except L. niger, for which a whole-body analysis was performed due to t

The direct and indirect effects of environmental toxicants on the health of bumblebees and their microbiomes.

Bumblebees (Bombus spp.) are important and widespread insect pollinators, but the act of foraging on flowers can expose them to harmful pesticides and chemicals such as oxidizers and heavy metals. How these compounds directly influence bee survival and indirectly affect bee health via the gut microbiome is largely unknown. As toxicants in floral nectar and pollen take many forms, we explored the genomes of bee-associated microbes for their potential to detoxify cadmium, copper, selenate, the neonicotinoid pesticide imidacloprid, and hydrogen peroxide-which have all been identified in floral ne

Examining the individual and additive effects of cold storage and CO2 narcosis on queen survival and reproduction in bumble bees.

Diapause is a pre-programmed arrest of development allowing insects to survive in unfavorable environments. In adult insects, diapause termination is often followed by a reallocation of macronutrients and a transition to reproduction, and in some insects, this transition can be achieved using narcosis with CO2. However, whether CO2narcosis and diapause act in concert to affect reproduction remains unknown. Here, we investigated the separated and combined effects of diapause and CO2on female reproduction in queens of the common eastern bumble bee Bombus impatiens. Queens were treated with CO2 f

Comet assay application in environmental monitoring: DNA damage in human leukocytes and plant cells in comparison with bacterial and yeast tests.

Urban airborne particulate is a complex mixture of air pollutants, many of which have not been identified. However, short-term mutagenesis tests together with chemicophysical parameter analysis are able to better assess air quality and genotoxic load. The findings of continuous monitoring (January 1991-August 1998) of urban air genotoxicity of a Po Valley town (Italy) on Salmonella typhimurium and Saccharomyces cerevisiae are reported. During this period, various measures (catalytic devices, unleaded fuels, annual vehicle overhaul, etc.) to improve air-dispersed pollutant control were enforced

Impacts and mechanisms of CO2 narcosis in bumble bees: narcosis depends on dose, caste and mating status and is not induced by anoxia.

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is commonly used to immobilize insects and to induce reproduction in bees. However, despite its wide use and potential off-target impacts, its underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. Here, we used Bombus impatiens to examine whether CO2 impacts are mediated by anoxia and whether these mechanisms differ between female castes or following mating in queens. We examined the behavior, physiology and gene expression of workers, mated queens and virgin queens following exposure to anoxia, hypoxia, full and partial hypercapnia, and controls. Hypercapnia and anoxia caused i

Effects of the floral phytochemical eugenol on parasite evolution and bumble bee infection and preference.

Ecological and evolutionary pressures on hosts and parasites jointly determine infection success. In pollinators, parasite exposure to floral phytochemicals may influence between-host transmission and within-host replication. In the bumble bee parasite Crithidia bombi, strains vary in phytochemical resistance, and resistance increases under in vitro selection, implying that resistance/infectivity trade-offs could maintain intraspecific variation in resistance. We assessed costs and benefits of in vitro selection for resistance to the floral phytochemical eugenol on C. bombi infection in Bombus

A simulated natural heatwave perturbs bumblebee immunity and resistance to infection.

As a consequence of ongoing climate change, heatwaves are predicted to increase in frequency, intensity, and duration in many regions. Such extreme events can shift organisms from thermal optima for physiology and behaviour, with the thermal stress hypothesis predicting reduced performance at temperatures where the maintenance of biological functions is energetically costly. Performance includes the ability to resist biotic stressors, including infectious diseases, with increased exposure to extreme temperatures having the potential to synergise with parasite infection. Climate change is a pro
