Genetic diversity is rapidly lost from small, isolated populations by genetic drift. Measuring the level of genetic drift using effective population size (N e) is highly useful for management. Single-cohort genetic N e estimators approximate the number of breeders in one season (N b): a value < 100 signals likely inbreeding depression. Per-generation N e < 1000 estimated from multiple cohort signals reduced adaptive potential. Natural populations rarely meet assumptions of N e-estimation, so interpreting estimates is challenging. The detrimental effects of matings between relatives are well known. However, few studies determine the extent to which inbreeding depression in males is due to natural or sexual selection. Importantly, measuring fitness or key fitness components, rather than phenotypic traits allows more accurate estimation of inbreeding depression. We investigate how differences in inbreeding and juvenile diet (i.e. early stressful environment) influence a key component of male fitness, namely their reproductive success. We experimentally created inbred and outbred male mosquitofish (Gambusia holbrooki) by m

Island populations are at heightened risk of inbreeding due to reduced mating opportunities with unrelated conspecifics. Extensive inbreeding can result in inbreeding depression (reduced fitness of individuals with related parents). Alexander Archipelago wolves (Canis lupus ligoni) are a geographically isolated subspecies that occur in the Southeast Alaskan panhandle, USA, and coastal British Columbia, Canada. Wolves on the Prince of Wales Island complex (POW) in Southeast Alaska are expected to have lower levels of resiliency because they are a small, insular population that has experienced h

In small, closed populations such as the Lipizzan horse, maintaining genetic diversity while limiting inbreeding is a key challenge in conservation breeding. The Lipizzan is an indigenous Slovenian breed with a small population and restricted gene flow from other subpopulations. Inbreeding is traditionally monitored with pedigree-based coefficients, but these often underestimate realised autozygosity, particularly when pedigree depth is limited. This study compared pedigree-based inbreeding (F_PED) with four genomic estimators (F_HOM, F_ROH, F_HBD, F_GRM) in 329 Slovenian Lipizzan horses genot

BACKGROUND: Ricinus communis L. is a large plant from the spurge family (Euphorbiaceae), grown for industrial and medicinal purposes. In this research, progenies obtained from three types of reproduction, including apomixis, self-pollination, and open-pollination from a worldwide collection of castor bean (14 genotypes), were evaluated based on yield components and agro-morphological traits and the amount of inbreeding depression and apomixis advantages were estimated in each genotype using offspring. In addition, the expression of eight candidate genes for apomixis (including Helic, SERK, BBM

The 'genetic paradox of invasions' refers to successful invasive populations originating from low founder numbers. Theory predicts that such invaders should exhibit reduced genetic diversity and increased inbreeding, which should restrict their evolutionary potential and often lead to inbreeding depression. Here, we provide evidence for an invader succeeding against these odds by demonstrating strikingly strong inbreeding in a highly successful, invasive freshwater mussel. Using whole-genome resequencing data, we show that zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) from thriving invasive populations

We present results of comparisons between consanguineous and control couples and their children in Southern Brasil. Multiple regression, t-test and chi 2 analyses were applied to the data. The following variables were investigated; Parents: structure of first cousin marriages, latitude and longitude of birthplaces, cohabitation time, rurality, marriage age, occupation, number of liveborn children, and frequency of twinning. Schoolchildren: clinical data as classified into 24 discontinuous traits, each one subdivided into two categories (number and severity), and seven continuous traits (weight

A captive colony of collared lemmings (Dicrostonyx groenlandicus) from northern Alaska produced a male-biased sex ratio of 67% males for about three generations. These lemmings have a pair of autosomes fused to the sex chromosomes. Thus, males have two copies of some (formerly autosomal) sex-linked genes: One set is X-linked; the other can be described as Y-linked. Given such a karyotype, deleterious recessive alleles on the autosomal portion of the X chromosome are more resistant to selection than truly autosomal loci because they can be eliminated by homozygosity only in females. The male-bi

Despite 40 years of conservation of the critically endangered Chinese alligator (Alligator sinensis), the genomic underpinnings of its status remained uncharted. Genome sequencing data of 244 individuals uncovered relatively low overall genomic diversity/heterozygosity and long runs of homozygosity, with captive populations exhibiting higher heterozygosity and smaller inbreeding coefficients compared to wild individuals. The decreased level of inbreeding in the captive population demonstrates the contribution of the large captive breeding population. The estimated recent effective population s

BACKGROUND: Levels of inbreeding in cattle populations have increased in the past due to the use of a limited number of bulls for artificial insemination. High levels of inbreeding lead to reduced genetic diversity and inbreeding depression. Various estimators based on different sources, e.g., pedigree or genomic data, have been used to estimate inbreeding coefficients in cattle populations. However, the comparative advantage of using full sequence data to assess inbreeding is unknown. We used pedigree and genomic data at different densities from 50k to full sequence variants to compare how di

Inbreeding can threaten population persistence by reducing disease resistance through the accelerated loss of gene diversity (i.e. heterozygosity). Such inbreeding depression can affect many different fitness-related traits, including survival, reproductive success, and parasite susceptibility. Empirically quantifying the effects of inbreeding on parasite resistance is therefore important for ex-situ conservation of vertebrates. The present study evaluates the disease susceptibility of individuals bred under three different breeding regimes (inbred, crossed with full siblings; control, randoml

Inbreeding depression is a major threat to the long-term viability of small populations. Although captive breeding and genetic rescue are the main alternative in conservation, their genomic impacts are largely unknown, and the unintended effects of these approaches may intensify the depression by introducing new deleterious mutations. Based on whole-genome sequencing data from 247 critically endangered Chinese alligators, we constructed a high-resolution genetic variation map and identified three distinct genetic populations, clarifying their demographic history and further supporting the inde

There is a constant increase in the number of species suffering marked reductions in population size. This reduction in size and the lack of genetic flow may lead to a decrease in genetic variability and to matings between close relatives (i.e. inbreeding) with an ensuing reduction in fitness. It is thus important to understand the mechanism underlying the deleterious effects of inbreeding and to develop reproductive biotechnologies that will allow the reduction of inbreeding depression by facilitating gene exchange between populations. The study of three endangered species of gazelles, Cuvier

Inbreeding increases the risk of certain Mendelian disorders in humans but may also reduce fitness through its effects on complex traits and diseases. Such inbreeding depression is thought to occur due to increased homozygosity at causal variants that are recessive with respect to fitness. Until recently it has been difficult to amass large enough sample sizes to investigate the effects of inbreeding depression on complex traits using genome-wide single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) data in population-based samples. Further, it is difficult to infer causation in analyses that relate degree of

During 15 years of inbreeding of pigs (Canadian Landrace) a semi-inbred line has been developed. The inbreeding coefficient (FX) is 0.84, which theoretically corresponds to between 8-9 generations of brother/sister matings. At the highest inbreeding level (0.84) the mean number of newborn piglets in the litter was 7.2 (5 litters, n = 36) including 5 stillborn (13.8%). The mean birth weight of the litter was 8.56 kg (5 litters, n = 31) the mean piglet birth weight was 1.23 kg and at the age of 21 days the mean weight of a litter was 33.24 kg with a mean piglet weight of 5.44 kg. The aim of this work was to analyze genetic parameters such as the inbreeding coefficient (F), relatedness coefficient (AR) and partial inbreeding coefficient (Fij) of the whole PRE population, and the ancestors which account for 50% of the total genetic variability of the current population, from genealogical information. The average F of the whole PRE population (328,706 animals) has decreased from 8.45% to 7.51% in the least 20 years. The Fij was estimated for the whole PRE population, resulting in a database of 58,772,533 records containing one record for each Fij that each animal receives

BACKGROUND: The patterns of inbreeding coefficients (FIS) and fine spatial genetic structure (FSGS) were evaluated regarding the mating system and inbreeding depression of food-deceptive orchids, Dactylorhiza majalis, Dactylorhiza incarnata var. incarnata, and Dactylorhiza fuchsii, from NE Poland.
METHODS: We used 455 individuals, representing nine populations of three taxa and AFLPs, to estimate percent polymorphic loci and Nei's gene diversity, which are calculated using the Bayesian method; FIS; FST; FSGS with the pairwise kinship coefficient (Fij); and AMOVA in populations.
RESULTS: We d

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Tools showing best conservation practices are becoming critical for rare plant conservation as populations become isolated through habitat fragmentation and changing ecosystem processes. We illustrate the importance of reintroduction and assisted gene flow, using reintroduction of the USA federally threatened Pitcher's thistle (Cirsium pitcheri), a monocarpic perennial endemic to the western Great Lakes sand dunes. We evaluate the success of experimental reintroductions of this species into its dynamic coastal environment and address fundamental issues for rare plant reint

The Thoroughbred horse is a legacy of centuries of selective breeding for speed, emerging from the admixture of British mares and imported Oriental stallions. While previous work explored its genetic diversity, inbreeding, and selection signatures, the breed demographic and selection dynamics during the 20th-century remain poorly understood. Here, we sequenced the genome of Phar Lap, a late-1920s/early-1930s racing champion, and analyzed the largest time-series of Thoroughbred whole-genome sequences, within a global panel of 850 horse genomes. Demographic modeling reveals a marked decline in g

The coexistence of different mating strategies, whereby a species can reproduce both by selfing and outcrossing, is an evolutionary enigma. Theory predicts two predominant stable mating states: outcrossing with strong inbreeding depression or selfing with weak inbreeding depression. As these two mating strategies are subject to opposing selective forces, mixed breeding systems are thought to be a rare transitory state yet can persist even after multiple speciation events. We hypothesise that if each mating strategy plays a distinctive role during some part of the species life history, opposing
