Grounded theory study on the psychological and behavioural processes of medical nurses in response to patient incivility.

BACKGROUND: Patient incivility is a significant source of work-related stress for nurses, particularly in highly interactive departments such as internal medicine. Although such behaviours are low in intensity, they occur frequently, continuously depleting nurses' emotional and psychological resources and impacting their well-being and the safety of nursing care. Existing research predominantly focuses on the impact at an overall level, lacking in-depth understanding of nurses' individual cognition, coping strategies, and internal psychological processes within specific situations. This study

An Integrative Review of Nurse-to-Nurse Incivility, Hostility, and Workplace Violence: A GPS for Nurse Leaders.

Bullying, lateral violence, and incivility are real phenomena in the nursing workplace and remain widespread across all care settings. The American Nurses Association recommends zero tolerance for any form of violence from any source and adopting evidence-based strategies to mitigate incivility and bullying. This integrative review examined the evidence regarding nurse-to-nurse incivility, bullying, and workplace violence for 4 nurse populations-student, new graduate, experienced, and academic faculty. Ganong and Cooper's review methodology structured the evidence synthesis. Twenty-one article

The Relationship between Workplace Incivility and Helping Behavior: Roles of Job Dissatisfaction and Political Skill.

This article investigates the mediating role of job dissatisfaction in the relationship between employees' perceptions of workplace incivility and their helping behavior, as well as the buffering role of political skill in this process. Three-wave, time-lagged data collected from employees and their supervisors revealed that employees' exposure to workplace incivility diminished their helping behavior through their sense of job dissatisfaction. This mediating role of job dissatisfaction was less salient, however, to the extent that employees were equipped with political skill. For organization

The Level and Frequency of Faculty Incivility as Perceived by Nursing Students of Lorestan University of Medical Sciences.

Background: Little evidence exists concerning students' perception of faculty incivility. Given the growing trend of incivility and the stressful nature of these behaviors, the present study aimed to investigate the level and frequency of faculty incivility as perceived by nursing students. Methods: A stratified random sample of 178 students from four nursing faculties of Lorestan University of Medical Sciences participated in the present cross-sectional study. The Incivility in Nursing Education-Revised Survey, consisting of 24 items, was used to investigate the prevalence and frequency of fa

Tit for tat or good for evil? Linking customer incivility, hostility, guilt, and employee behaviors.

The existing literature overemphasizes the negative effects of customer incivility on service employees. However, the positive effects of customer incivility on employee behavior are rarely mentioned. Drawing on affective events theory and attribution theory, we used a moderated dual-mediator causal model to explore the effect of customer incivility on employees' revenge behavior and customer-oriented behavior through hostility and guilt, and the moderating role of customer blame attribution. An empirical study with a sample of 366 employee-supervisor pairs and two-wave, two-source data indica

Licensed practical nurses' experiences of incivility while working in acute care settings: A scoping study.

Workplace incivility toward registered nurses is well documented, yet the experiences of licensed practical nurses (LPNs) and equivalent roles in acute care settings remain understudied, despite their essential contributions to the nursing workforce. This scoping study examined published literature on workplace incivility experienced by LPNs in acute care and identified gaps in the evidence. Studies were included if they focused on LPNs (or similar roles such as licensed vocational nurses, enrolled nurses, or second-level nurses), employed in an acute care hospital, reported at least one incid

Surgeon Incivility in the Preoperative Setting: A Multi-institutional Crossover Study on Anesthesiology Residents' Decision-Making.

BACKGROUND: Incivility in the perioperative setting is recognized as a threat to patient safety and workforce well-being. Anesthesiology residents are in a critical phase of developing professional judgment, making them potentially vulnerable to interpersonal dynamics. We sought to evaluate the impact of surgeon incivility on residents' decisions to either proceed with or postpone surgery in simulated cases characterized by clinical equipoise. METHODS: We conducted a prospective, randomized, blinded, crossover study at two academic medical centers (Mount Sinai Health System and University of

"It is Essentially About Treating Each Other Well": Insights from Faculty on Incivility in Nursing Education.

STUDY BACKGROUND: Incivility in nursing educational institutions, which may be perpetrated by both students and faculty, is troubling given that such institutions have a mandate to prepare students for caring, relational nursing practice. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to contribute to understanding nursing academic incivility through an examination of nursing faculty's perspectives on student and faculty incivility. METHODS: The study was conducted using a mixed methods, descriptive, survey design with collection and analysis of quantitative and qualitative data. The sample consiste

Introducing the Strategic Scripting, Repetitive Practice, Reflection, and Debriefing Model: Evolution of Cognitive Rehearsal to Address Incivility.

BACKGROUND: Incivility in nursing remains a pervasive and complex issue that undermines nurse well-being, team functioning, and patient safety. For two decades, cognitive rehearsal (CR) has served as a foundational evidence-based strategy to help nurses mitigate uncivil behaviors. METHOD: Traditional CR relies on linear, scripted responses and may not fully prepare nurses for the dynamic, unpredictable, and high-stakes nuances of real-world academic and health care work environments. The author reconceptualizes CR as a rigorous, experiential process and introduces scenario-based simulation wi

Not Just How Many but Who Is on Shift: The Impact of Workplace Incivility and Bullying on Care Delivery in Nursing Homes.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Much of the literature examining the staffing-care quality link in long-term care (LTC) homes focuses on staffing ratios; that is, how many staff are on shift. Far less attention is devoted to exploring the impact of staff members' workplace relationships, or who is on shift. As part of our work exploring workplace incivility and bullying among residential care aides (RCAs), we examined how RCAs' workplace relationships are shaped by peer incivility and bullying and the impact on care delivery. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Using critical ethnography, we conducted 10

The moderating role of adverse childhood experiences in the relationship between workplace incivility and suboptimal health status among nurses.

BACKGROUND: Nurses, as the largest and most patient-facing group in healthcare systems, play a vital role in delivering high-quality care. However, they constantly work in high-risk and high-stress environments. Workplace incivility, a subtle yet pervasive stressor, may cause persistent harm to nurses' health. Identifying how different sources of incivility affect nurses' suboptimal health status and examining whether adverse childhood experiences moderate this relationship are essential for developing targeted health promotion strategies. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted in

Change of heart, change of mind, or change of willpower? Explaining the dynamic relationship between experienced and perpetrated incivility change.

As organizational scholarship increasingly recognizes the dynamic nature of interpersonal stressors like workplace incivility, the present study investigates workplace incivility change and the mechanisms through which it affects employees. Whereas prior research demonstrates that employees who experience workplace incivility are likely to engage in similar behavior because of depleted self-control, the current investigation draws on Metcalfe and Mischel's (1999) dual-process model to examine additional affective and cognitive mechanisms underlying this dynamic process. We propose that interce

Registered Nurses' Experiences With Incivility During the Early Phase of COVID-19 Pandemic: Results of a Multi-State Survey.

BACKGROUND: Incivility among workers in the health sector is recognized as an occupational hazard. The COVID-19 outbreak brought sudden and profound changes to many health care settings, many of which have been identified as antecedents to workplace incivility. The purpose of this retrospective study was to explore the experiences of registered nurses with workplace incivility, cyber-incivility, and incivility outside of work during the early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: This mixed-methods study used convenience sampling. Data were collected from June to September 2020 via an onli

Explaining the negative impact of workplace incivility on work and non-work outcomes: The roles of negative rumination and organizational support.

Research studies have shown that workplace incivility is associated with numerous negative work and non-work outcomes. The underlying mechanisms explaining why workplace incivility is associated with these outcomes, as well as contextual buffers of these relationships, have received less attention. This study extends workplace incivility research by examining the mediating role of negative rumination as a potential factor undergirding the relationship between experiences of incivility from colleagues at work and detrimental outcomes. We also investigated perceived organizational support and fa

Demand-Matched Self-Efficacy and Perceived User Incivility in Healthcare: A Two-Wave Study and an Exploratory Training Intervention.

AIM(S): To examine which of three functionally distinct, demand-relevant self-efficacy beliefs showed the most consistent prospective association with baseline-adjusted changes in perceived user (i.e., patients, relatives and visitors) incivility, psychosomatic symptoms and job satisfaction among healthcare workers, and whether a targeted training programme can strengthen this resource in acute nursing settings. DESIGN: Two linked studies: Study 1 used a two-wave change-over-time design, and Study 2 used an exploratory pre-post intervention design. METHODS: In Study 1, 74 healthcare workers

Effect of workplace incivility on end-of-work negative affect: examining individual and organizational moderators in a daily diary study.

Although previous studies have linked workplace incivility with various negative outcomes, they mainly focused on the long-term effects of chronic exposure to workplace incivility, whereas targets' short-term reactions to incivility episodes have been largely neglected. Using a daily diary design, the current study examined effects of daily workplace incivility on end-of-work negative affect and explored potential individual and organizational moderators. Data collected from 76 full-time employees across 10 consecutive working days revealed that daily workplace incivility positively predicted

The dark side of Gen-AI-assisted clinical work collaboration: work alienation, trait emotional intelligence, and instigated interprofessional incivility.

Generative artificial intelligence (Gen-AI) is becoming increasingly embedded in clinical work, yet its darker interpersonal and psychological consequences in hospital settings remain underexamined. Drawing on human-AI collaboration research and the strain process within job demands-resources (JD-R) theory, this study investigates whether Gen-AI-assisted clinical work collaboration increases instigated interprofessional incivility among physicians and nurses, whether work alienation mediates this relationship, and whether trait emotional intelligence (trait EI) conditions the alienation-incivi

Little things matter: a daily diary study of the within-person relationship between workplace incivility and work-related rumination.

Workplace incivility is a low-intensity, counterproductive work behavior associated with negative health outcomes and organizational consequences (e.g., turnover intention). In the present study, I used a daily diary design to investigate the short-term within-person effects of workplace incivility on work-related rumination. Time pressure was included in the present study to underline the importance of workplace incivility for off-work ruminative thoughts beyond the known effects of a stressful workday. Additionally, I propose mood at the end of the workday as a mediator for the proposed rela
