Twenty-three normal volunteers and 31 women admitted for stress or mixed incontinence underwent two 24-hour home pad weighing tests. In the patients the test result was compared with the result obtained with the 1-hour ward pad weighing test. Median pad weight gain was 4 g/24-h, with an upper 99% limit of 8 g/24 h in normal women. The median urine loss was 17 g/24-h in the patients. Eighteen (58%) patients were classified as incontinent according to the result of the 1-h ward test, versus 28 (90%) according to the result of the 24-h home test. There was no significant correlation between the r

The repeatability of the 20-min pad test has not been reported. The aim of this study was to evaluate the test-retest reliability of the 20-min pad test in women with urodynamic stress incontinence. Among 89 enrolled women, 67 (75%) women were diagnosed with urodynamic stress incontinence and were examined in this study. The mean strong-desire volume of all the women was 306.7 ± 115.7 mL. The pad weights of the test versus retest were 28.3 ± 41.2 g versus 28.4 ± 38.6 g, p = 0.29, respectively. The test and retest pad weight results had a Spearman's rho of 0.788 (p < 0.0001). BACKGROUND: Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) is a common problem affecting the quality of life of women.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: It is a prospective study conducted over 40 women of SUI by endovaginal ultrasound on rest and Valsalva preoperatively and 6 months postoperatively for levator hiatus (LH), pubovisceral thickness, urethral length, and bladder neck (BN) position. A 24 h pad test was also performed on all women at the same time for grading of SUI. Treatment given was medical in 4 (10%), Burch colposuspension in 18 (45%), and tension-free obturator tape in 18 (45%).
RESULTS: The mean

BACKGROUND: Urinary incontinence (UI) remains an important complication after robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP). While sarcopenia-related markers may help predict persistent UI, existing evidence is inconsistent and often based on subjective assessments. We aimed to evaluate the predictive value of preoperative psoas major muscle cross-sectional area (PMM-CSA) for moderate-to-severe UI 12 months after RARP and its association with longitudinal continence recovery.
METHODS: This cohort study included 449 patients with prostate cancer who underwent RARP. PMM-CSA was measured on preope

We aimed to measure the level of agreement and acceptance ratio of the 20-minute versus 60-minute sanitary pad test in female patients with stress urinary incontinence (SUI). This is one-sample cross-experimental design. SUI patients at the Urogynecology Outpatient Clinic at Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital in Jakarta, Indonesia were consecutively enrolled as participants. We first administered the 20-minute test, followed by the 60-minute test, or vice versa, within 1 week. The participants did not know the type of test performed or asked during the interview. Incontinence is a common health issue that affects hundreds of millions of people across the world. The solution is often to manage the condition with different kinds of single-use continence technologies, such as incontinence pads and other absorbent hygiene products (AHPs). Throughout their life cycle, these fossil-based products form a remarkable yet inadequately addressed ecological burden in society, contributing to global warming and other environmental degradation. The products are a necessity for their users' wellbeing. When looking for sustainability transitions in this field, focus o

This integrative review considers the role of skin occlusion and microclimate in incontinence-associated dermatitis (IAD), with a particular focus on disposable, body-worn, absorbent incontinence products. Although the mechanisms are not fully understood, the primary causes of IAD are well-established: occluded skin, in prolonged contact with urine and/or feces and exposed to abrasive forces, is more likely to be affected, and each of these factors can be influenced by wearing absorbent incontinence products. Studies comparing the effect of various absorbent products on skin health have been h

BACKGROUND: Between 8 and 87% of prostatectomies result in urinary incontinence, with around half of patients using incontinence pads daily at 6 months. Specialist urology continence nurses at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals (NNUH) NHS Foundation Trust created a pre- and post-surgical care pathway formalising support for these patients, which involves the provision of TENA Men (Essity) male incontinence pads.
AIMS: This audit aimed to assess patient satisfaction with this pathway and TENA Men pads.
METHODS: Patients who underwent a radical prostatectomy at NNUH between 27 April

Qualified nurses are accountable for selecting a suitable containment product for care home residents, which can be challenging for both the resident and health professional. Absorbent incontinence products are the most commonly used products for containing leakage. The purpose of this observational study was to review and understand how effective the Attends Product Selector Tool is when used to assess a resident for an appropriate disposable incontinence product and the in-use experience of products in relation to containment, product use and effectiveness. The study was undertaken in three

Containment products, commonly known as incontinence pads, are medically used in healthcare for patients with bladder and bowel symptoms. However, using them without a clinical need or selecting the wrong style or absorbency can lead to avoidable patient harm. In some cases, product formularies are developed with a greater focus on cost than clinical need, restricting access to certain styles and limiting the number of products prescribed per day. While registered healthcare professionals are accountable for assessing and prescribing containment products for patients under their care, they may

BACKGROUND: Incontinence is a common and embarrassing problem which has a profound effect on social and psychological well-being. Many people wear absorbent products to contain urine and/or faeces and protect their clothes and dignity. Users of absorbent pads are very diverse, including younger women, particularly those who have had children, older men with prostate disease, people with neurological conditions and older people with mobility and mental impairment. Whilst small absorbent pads for light incontinence are adequate for some users with low volumes of urine loss, for others with highe

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Urinary incontinence (UI) has not been examined in relation to perceptions of age discrimination (ageism). This study examined whether UI, absorbent product use, and confidence gained from absorbent product use are associated with ageism in later adulthood.
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Cross-sectional data were collected from 680 community-dwelling female and male participants. Participants were aged 55-73 years; 62% were women. In 2023-2024, UI, absorbent product use, confidence gained from absorbent product use, and ageism were assessed. Ageism variables (frequenc

OBJECTIVES: In our institution, a unique sling technique is performed for urinary incontinence after radical prostatectomy. However, in cases of severe urinary incontinence or in the medium to long term, the therapeutic effect may be insufficient. Therefore, a urethral sling technique that provides stronger compression of the bulbar urethra was developed, and its effectiveness was compared with the conventional technique.
METHODS: Seventeen cases of conventional sling surgery and 16 cases of improved sling surgery were included. The number of pads used per day, safety pad rate, and Internatio
