BACKGROUND: The rate of neonatal overweight remains generally high in type 1 diabetes (T1DM). Since glycemic control has improved over time other contributors need to be identified. Our aim is to evaluate the risk factors for large-for-gestational age infants (LGA) in women with T1DM and to evaluate whether the rate of LGA decreased over time.
METHODS: Retrospective analysis of the medical files of pregnant women with T1DM attending our university hospital form 01-01-1992 till 31-07-2014. The generalized mixed model was used to adjust for several pregnancies over time in the same women. A mul

OBJECTIVE: Large- (LGA) and appropriate-for-gestational age (AGA) infants differ in body fat mass and metabolic/endocrine mechanisms. We aimed to investigate in LGA and AGA infants possible alterations in cord blood levels of insulin and the adipokines vaspin and omentin-1 which are secreted by the adipose tissue and are implicated in insulin resistance/metabolic syndrome.
METHODS: Cord blood vaspin, omentin-1 and insulin levels were prospectively measured in 61 LGA and 36 AGA singleton full-term infants. Of the LGA group 13 infants were born from diabetic and 48 from non-diabetic mothers.

BACKGROUND: Small for gestational age (SGA) infants have an increased risk for neonatal mortality and morbidities. However, few studies have examined the risk of large for gestational age (LGA) on these factors. We compared the risk of mortality and morbidities in LGA premature infants with those of appropriate for gestational age (AGA) infants.
METHODS: Premature infants who were born between 2003 and 2012 at <26 weeks of gestational age were included. Relative risks of mortality and morbidities were evaluated between LGA and AGA infants.
RESULTS: From 6898 extremely premature infants, 357

OBJECTIVE: The use of growth velocities derived from fetal biometrics have been suggested to improve prediction of large for gestational age (LGA). Our objective was to determine if ultrasonographic growth velocities (GV) for abdominal circumference (AC) and estimated fetal weight (EFW) improve the prediction of LGA infants when compared to Hadlock EFW.
METHODS: This was a secondary analysis of data from a prospective study of women referred for growth ultrasounds during the 3rd trimester. Growth velocities (GV) for AC (AC - GV) and EFW (EFW - GV) were derived from the difference in Z-scores

AIM: To compare the post-natal effects of delayed cord clamping (DCC) and early cord clamping (ECC) in term large-for-gestational age (LGA) infants.
METHODS: This prospective randomised study included 51 term LGA infants. The umbilical cords of these infants were clamped at 15 s in group 1 (ECC group (n = 26)) and at 60 s in group 2 (DCC group (n = 25)). Data for Apgar scores, cord blood, pH and lactate values, second haematocrit, 24th bilirubin levels, duration of hospital stay and admission to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) were recorded.

BACKGROUND: There is no apparent consensus on obstetric management, i.e., induction of labor or expectant management of women with suspected large-for-gestational-age (LGA)-fetuses.
METHODS AND FINDINGS: To further examine the subject, a nationwide population-based cohort study from the Swedish Medical Birth Register in nulliparous non-diabetic women with singleton, vertex LGA (>90th centile) births, 1992-2013, was performed. Delivery of a live-born LGA infant induced at 38 completed weeks of gestation in non-preeclamptic pregnancies, was compared to those of expectant management, with delive

This study aimed to evaluate the association of maternal adiponectin with infant birth size in 1349 pregnant women at Uppsala University Hospital, Sweden. The mean age of the women was 31.0 years, and 40.9% were nulliparous. Maternal early mid-pregnancy adiponectin was measured in microgram/mL. Linear regression models were performed to evaluate the association between adiponectin and infant birth weight. Logistic regression models were used to evaluate adiponectin in relation to the odds of giving birth to an infant large-for-gestational-age (LGA, infant birth weight standard deviation score

OBJECTIVES: To compare the ability of three fetal growth charts (Fetal Medicine Foundation (FMF), Hadlock and National Institutes of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) race/ethnicity-specific) to predict large-for-gestational age (LGA) at birth in pregnant individuals with pregestational diabetes, and to determine whether inclusion of hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) level improves the predictive performance of the growth charts.
METHODS: This was a retrospective analysis of individuals with Type-1 or Type-2 diabetes with a singleton pregnancy that resulted in a non-anomalous live birth. Fetal

Studies have shown that maternal blood pressure level is associated with neonatal birthweight, but the results are not exactly consistent. As the most common hypertensive disorders during pregnancy, the mechanism of gestational hypertension and pre-eclampsia that affect fetal growth remain unclear. Our objective was to examine the association of gestational hypertension and pre-eclampsia with the risk of low birthweight (LBW) and small-for-gestational-age (SGA). Data were obtained from the China-US Collaborative Project for Neural Tube Defects Prevention, a large population-based cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: Infants born large for gestational age (LGA) are at an increased risk of short- and longer-term adverse outcomes. Understanding fetal growth and adiposity and their trajectories may help inform interventions to prevent birth of LGA infants. We aimed to compare fetal growth and adiposity measures of infants born LGA with those born not LGA, to determine whether the discrepancy at birth was primarily due to larger size throughout gestation, or instead to different trajectories of fetal growth.
STUDY DESIGN: This was a secondary analysis of secondary outcomes of fetal growth and adipo

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Large-for-gestational-age (LGA) infants are at increased risk of intrapartum complications. However, some infants classified as LGA may be appropriate-for-gestational-age (AGA) if adjusted for maternal stature. We determined whether customisation of birthweight centiles by maternal height, or height and weight, improves the detection of LGA infants at risk of complications.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of 38 246 term, singleton nulliparous women. We compared population birthweight centiles to those customised by height, or height and weight for complicati

We sought to examine neonatal morbidity in four groups of offspring (asymmetric large for gestational age [LGA], symmetric LGA, asymmetric non-LGA, symmetric non-LGA) exposed in utero to maternal type 1 diabetes, and the association between rate of fetal abdominal circumference growth and asymmetric LGA. We performed a secondary analysis of 302 singleton pregnancies. Neonatal morbidity (respiratory distress syndrome, polycythemia, hypoglycemia, hyperbilirubinemia, acidosis, and composite morbidity [any of the five]) was assessed. Serial ultrasound examinations after 20 weeks' gestation were av

INTRODUCTION: Infants born large for gestational age (LGA) have increased risks of adverse perinatal outcomes. Maternal obesity, defined as body mass index (BMI) ≥30 kg/m2 , is one of the most prevalent risk factors for LGA and the proportion of pregnancies complicated by obesity is increasing. Early identification of women with BMI ≥30 kg/m2 at increased risk of giving birth to an LGA infant may open possibilities for prevention, aiming at decreasing the incidence of LGA.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: To assess whether quality of maternal diet affects birth weight and the risk of small for gestational age (SGA) and/or large for gestational age (LGA) babies.
SUBJECTS/METHODS: This study is based on the Norwegian Mother and Child Cohort Study (MoBa) and includes 65,904 pregnant women who answered a validated food frequency questionnaire at mid-pregnancy. Three maternal dietary patterns were extracted based on characteristics of food items in each pattern. From these we created four non-overlapping groups: "high prudent," "high Western," "high traditional," and "mixed".

BACKGROUND: Being born small for gestational age (SGA) or large for gestational age (LGA) has short and long term metabolic consequences. There is a growing interest in the extent to which body composition, both in the short and the long term, differs in infants born at the extremes of these birth weights.
METHODS: Body composition in 25 SGA and 25 LGA infants were assessed during the first days of life and at 3-4 months of age using air displacement plethysmography.
RESULTS: SGA infants had significantly lower body fat (%) at birth compared to LGA infants. SGA infants increased their body w

Large-for-gestational-age (LGA) births occur in many pregnancies with an apparently metabolically healthy phenotype, limiting risk identification based on conventional clinical characteristics alone. We explored the association between second-trimester maternal serum lipidomic profiles and LGA risk in this apparently healthy population using a nested case-control design within an ongoing prospective pregnancy cohort. The study included a derivation cohort of 135 participants and an independent temporal validation cohort of 66 participants. Lipidomic profiles were analyzed by using liquid chrom
