A newborn male presented with watery diarrhea, dehydration and metabolic acidosis. Severe secretory diarrhea of variable magnitude persisted when the patient was on parenteral nutrition with no oral intake. Initial light microscopic evaluation of a small intestinal mucosal biopsy showed partial villous atrophy and crypt hypoplasia. Of 15 neonates born to mothers presenting with Graves' disease, who were admitted for presumptive thyroid disorder, 6 presented with neonatal thyrotoxicosis, 4 with goiter and/or hypothyroidism, and 5 presented with euthyroidism. The recording or urgent reports in Moscow since 1974 allowed analyzing the cases of purulent and septic diseases for the period of 1974-1978. The features of the time course and morbidity pattern of the disease, its seasonal fluctuations and the time of onset are presented. Thus, a tendency towards a decrease in morbidity was noted during the above period. The leading role of the diseases of the skin and the subcutaneous fat was established, the morbidity reports were found to fall mostly on the first 2 weeks of the infants' life, and the morbidity rate varied in different maternity hospitals.

We describe a newborn infant with veno-occlusive disease (VOD) of the liver. The authors had 52 newborns and infants with Hirschsprung's disease under observation. The activity of tissue acetylcholinesterase (ASE) was tested by the Karnovsky-Ruts method in 35 cases. ACE activity was evaluated according to 5 types and a specific "newborn" type was set apart. A positive (42.9%) and weakly positive (28.6%) types of ACE activity prevailed in the neonatal period. An analysis of 65 case histories of newborns with pyo-septic surgical diseases has been made. The extraction-spectrometrical method of analysis of blood serum is proposed. The distribution index (DI) in sepsis was always less than 1. Local forms of purulent infection were diagnosed if the DI was more than 1.
