Previous studies have shown that oxytocin (OT)-deficient female mice produced by homologous recombination fail to lactate but exhibit normal parturition and reproductive behaviors. We examined the ultrasonic vocalizations of infant mice and the subsequent aggressive and fear behavior of adult male OT knockout (OT-KO) mice. Infant OT-KO mice were less vocal than wild-type (WT) control mice during separations from the mother and peers. Adult OT-KO males were generally more aggressive in isolation-induced and resident-intruder tests of aggression and less fearful in the plus maze and acoustic sta

3 groups of high-risk newborns and their controls were assessed at 92 weeks post-conceptional age using Bayley's Infant Behavioral Record (IBR). The 3 groups of high-risk infants were those who weighed 1,500 grams or less at birth and required no ventilator therapy, those weighing 1,500 grams or less at birth who required ventilator therapy, and newborns weighing more than 1,500 grams at birth who required ventilator therapy. Controls were healthy term infants matched for 7 socioeconomic and demographic variables. The first principal component of the IBR ratings for the 3 groups of high-risk i

The impact of maternal adverse experiences on early parent-infant interaction and child development is widely acknowledged. Yet, the underlying mechanisms of intergenerational transmission remain poorly understood, especially in samples facing high adversity. This study explored the unpredictability of maternal (auditory, tactile, and visual) sensory signals as a mediator between maternal childhood maltreatment and infant emotional reactivity in a sample from southwestern Uganda. In 115 mother-infant dyads (M = 28.70 years, SD = 6.68, and M = 7.87 months, SD = 0.81), both maternal trauma expos

Background/Objectives: To describe a previously unreported compensatory behavior used by an infant with severe bilateral congenital ptosis associated with blepharophimosis syndrome (BPES). Methods: Observational case report of a 4.5-month-old infant with severe bilateral congenital upper eyelid ptosis due to BPES. Results: The infant demonstrated classic compensatory mechanisms, including frontalis overaction and chin elevation, which were insufficient to clear the visual axis. Notably, she repeatedly used the dorsal surfaces of both fists to elevate the upper eyelids simultaneously and mainta

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to assess associations of theoretically reallocating time from sleep, sedentary behavior, or light-intensity physical activity (LPA) to moderate/vigorous-intensity physical activity (MVPA) during pregnancy with infant growth outcomes.
METHODS: We used data from a cohort of pregnant individuals with overweight or obesity ( n = 116). At 9 to 15 and 30 to 36 wk of gestation, waking movement was measured using wrist-worn accelerometers and sleep duration was self-reported. Outcomes were obtained from delivery electronic health records (birth) and study visits

As a result of evolution, human babies are born with outstanding abilities for human communication and cooperation. The other side of the coin is their great sensitivity to any clear and durable violation in their relationship with caregivers. Infant sustained social withdrawal behavior (ISSWB) was first described in infants who had been separated from their caregivers, as in Spitz's description of "hospitalism" and "anaclitic depression." Later, ISSWB was pointed to as a major clinical psychological feature in failure-to-thrive infants. Fraiberg also described freezing behavior as one of the

Relatively little work has examined potential interactions between child intrinsic factors and extrinsic environmental factors in the development of negative affect in early life. This work is important because high levels of early negative affectivity have been associated with difficulties in later childhood adjustment. We examined associations between infant frontal electroencephalogram (EEG), maternal parenting behaviors, and children's negative affect across the first two years of life. Infant baseline frontal EEG asymmetry was measured at 5 months; maternal sensitivity and intrusiveness w

Accumulating studies have defined a role for the intestinal microbiota in modulation of host behavior. Research using gnotobiotic mice emphasizes that early microbial colonization with a complex microbiota (conventionalization) can rescue some of the behavioral abnormalities observed in mice that grow to adulthood completely devoid of bacteria (germ-free mice). However, the human infant and adult microbiomes vary greatly, and effects of the neonatal microbiome on neurodevelopment are currently not well understood. Microbe-mediated modulation of neural circuit patterning in the brain during neu

Assisted reproductive technologies (ART) used in fertility clinics include in vitro fertilization (IVF) and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), followed by embryo transfer into the biological or a surrogate mother. Over 1,000,000 liveborn offspring--an estimated 1 in 150 United States newborns--have been produced worldwide by ART since 1978. IVF appears to produce healthy children in singleton pregnancies, though concerns remain regarding preterm deliveries, multiple pregnancies, as well as the longer-term consequences of all ART procedures. Clinical studies remain difficult to interpret

Young (3-4 years old) laboratory-reared rhesus monkeys were observed in five 15-minute tests with 1-15-day-old infants. Males and females were equally likely to investigate infants. Females communicated more with infants by grin-lipsmacking and gurgling--gestures that were not shown by any males. More females presented the ventrum to infants than did males. Females contacted infants more than did males by grooming, crouching over, and having full body contact with them. To see whether prenatal androgens produced the male pattern of response, we conducted similar tests with pseudohermaphrodites

The association between prenatal stress factors and infant sleep has been examined in the literature, however, the mechanisms explaining this association remain unclear. The present study examined the indirect association between prenatal stress and infant sleep problems via maternal emotional distress and maternal sensitivity in distress-eliciting context in a three-wave longitudinal study that followed 299 mothers from pregnancy until the infants were 6 months old. Expectant mothers reported demographics, prenatal stress (i.e., stressful life events, neighborhood violence, income) and emotio

The current study examined the mediating effect of maternal negative expressiveness as well as the moderating effects of infant inhibitory control (IC) in the association between maternal childhood emotional abuse (CEA) and infant behavior problems. Drawing from 207 families from mainland China, 2-wave data were reported in this study when the infants were 6 months (T1) and 14 (T2) months. Mothers (Mean age = 32.85 years, SD = 4.04) reported their CEA on the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire-Short Form (CTQ-SF) at T1, and their negative expressiveness on the Self-Expressiveness in the Family Ques

The extent to which indices of maternal physiological arousal (skin conductance augmentation) and regulation (vagal withdrawal) while parenting predict infant attachment disorganization and behavior problems directly or indirectly via maternal sensitivity was examined in a sample of 259 mothers and their infants. Two covariates, maternal self-reported emotional risk and Adult Attachment Interview attachment coherence were assessed prenatally. Mothers' physiological arousal and regulation were measured during parenting tasks when infants were 6 months old. Maternal sensitivity was observed duri

The objective of the study was to identify latent variables that can be used to inform theoretical models of perinatal influences on postnatal depressed mood and maternal-infant attachment. A routine survey of mothers with newborn infants was commenced in South Western Sydney in 2000. The survey included the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) and 46 psychosocial and health-related variables. Mothers (n = 15,389) delivering in 2002 and 2003 were surveyed at 2-3 weeks for depressive symptoms. Nonlinear principal components analysis was undertaken to identify dimensions that might repres

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the role that easy infant temperament and cumulative environmental risk play in predicting cognitive, language, and behavioral outcomes in 3-year-old children at high social risk.
METHODS: Subjects were 412 mother-infant dyads, recruited at birth, participating in a longitudinal study examining the effects of prenatal methamphetamine on child development. This analysis includes a subsample (n = 290) of the study with a completed 3-year visit. Temperament was assessed by the Infant Behavior Questionnaire at 12 months. Factor analysis from well-validated measures

In several species, stress compromises maternal behaviors that are important for infant viability (e.g. licking and grooming). Understanding how stress in captivity affects maternal behavior could therefore be beneficial, especially for carnivores in zoos and breeding centers where infant mortality is often high. We used a model carnivore--American mink--to test two hypotheses, namely that maternal investment and/or behavior is i. improved by environmental enrichment; and ii. compromised by stereotypic behavior. We observed 22 females raised in an indoor facility, 9 enriched, 13 non-enriched.

BACKGROUND: Young infants may have irregular sleeping and feeding patterns. Such regulation difficulties are known correlates of maternal depressive symptoms. Parental beliefs about their role in regulating infant behaviors also may play a role. We investigated the association of depressive symptoms with infant feeding/sleeping behaviors, parent regulation beliefs, and the interaction of the two.
METHOD: In 2006, 272 mothers of infants aged up to 24 weeks completed a questionnaire about infant behavior and regulation beliefs. Participants were recruited from general medical practices and chil

Phenobarbital (PB) has been used at several pediatric centers for prophylaxis against neonatal hyperbilirubinemia. However, few attempts have been made to evaluate this procedure quantitatively, and a variety of dose schedules has been proposed. Therefore, a randomized, controlled clinical trial was performed in which the effects on bilirubin disposition and on neonatal behavior was quantitated. Forty-three preterm infants were randomized into one of four dose groups and given 0, 4, 8, or 12 mg of PB per kg in a single dose within the first few hours after birth (mean 2.2 h). The total serum b

IMPORTANCE: Linking prenatal drug exposures to both infant behavior and adult cognitive outcomes may improve early interventions.
OBJECTIVE: To assess whether neonatal physical, neurobehavioral, and infant cognitive measures mediate the association between prenatal cocaine exposure (PCE) and adult perceptual reasoning IQ.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This study used data from a longitudinal, prospective birth cohort study with follow-up from 1994 to 2018 until offspring were 21 years post partum. A total of 384 (196 PCE and 188 not exposed to cocaine [NCE]) infants and mothers were scr

UNLABELLED: Diverse behavioral cues have been proposed to be useful cues in infant pain assessment, but there is a paucity of evidence on the basis of formal psychometric evaluation to establish their validity for this purpose. We aimed to examine 2 widely used coding systems, the Neonatal Facial Coding System (NFCS) and the Modified Behavior Pain Scale (MBPS), by examining their factor structures with confirmatory factor analysis using a large archival data set. The results indicated that an item-reduced NFCS scale with 3 items produced a 1-factor pain model that maintained the good psychomet
