Role of Vitamin D in Prevention of Food Allergy in Infants.

The prevalence of food allergy is increasing over the last decades. The role of vitamin D in the prevention of food allergy has been largely investigated. Its role on the physiology of calcium and bone is known, but calcitriol (active form of the vitamin D) also influences the epithelial cells, T cells, B cells, macrophages, and dendritic cells. Almost all cells of the adaptive immune system express the vitamin D receptor, making them also capable of being vitamin responsive. Specifically considering the potential role of vitamins in food allergy, vitamin D has been shown to affect several mec

Food sensitization in infants and young children with atopic dermatitis.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic, relapsing, inflammatory skin disease. Children with AD tend to have a higher prevalence of food allergies. This study investigated the clinical significance of food sensitization in AD patients. A total of 266 AD patients participated in this study. The prevalence of food sensitization and clinically relevant sensitization were compared in the subjects according to their age and AD severity. Sera from all patients were analyzed for food-specific IgE levels using the Pharmacia CAP System FEIA. The serum specific IgE levels for egg, milk, peanut and soybean w

[Research on infants with atopic dermatitis caused by food allergies].

We have examined 370 infants less than 12 months of age with atopic dermatitis about food allergies, especially by egg white antigens. Since the results of the skin scratch test and serum specific IgE antibody test often correspond to each other, only the serum specific IgE antibody test was given to infants over 6 months of age. An oral provocation test using boiled egg white was given to 176 patients, and 52 of them showed immediate positive reaction. The number of patients with a positive reaction was much fewer than expected. This may be due to lowered levels of egg white antigens from bei

Multiple food allergy: a possible diagnosis in breastfed infants.

Six infants suspected of food allergy during breastfeeding were evaluated using prick tests, total IgE, RASTs and intestinal permeability measurements during fast and provocation with mother's milk. An elimination diet was undertaken in mothers, removing first cow's milk protein (CMP), then, when inefficient, all foods suspected on the clinical history or a positive prick test in the child, followed by oral challenges in mother's diet with the corresponding food. The sole CMP-free diet in mothers always proved insufficient. In four, an additional diet excluding two to three other foods cleared

Food and drug reactions, wheezing, and eczema in preterm infants.

Allergic reactions were investigated in 777 preterm infants who were randomly assigned to early diet and followed up to 18 months post term. Wheezing or asthma was common (incidence 23%); it was associated with neonatal ventilation, maternal smoking, and a family history of atopy and was unexpectedly reduced in babies born by caesarean section. Even in non-ventilated infants, the incidence of subsequent wheezing was 18%, rising to an estimated 44% (using logistic regression) when the foregoing risk factors (excluding ventilation) were present. Eczema occurred in 151 infants (19%) and was stron

Consumption of food and nutrients by infants in Huascar (Lima), Peru.

Consumption of breast milk, liquids, and foods by 131 poor Peruvian infants was measured on 1661 child-days of observation during their first year of life. Breast-milk intake was estimated by 12-h test-weighing; macronutrients were analyzed in samples of milk. Other foods and liquids were weighed at preparation and consumption; nutrient contents were estimated from food composition tables. Mean energy intakes increased with age but declined from 95% to 78% of recommended amounts during the year. Mean protein intakes were generally above recommended amounts but more than one-third of infants re

Food allergy in preterm infants fed human milk.

In 80 preterms aged 9-24 months (mean age: 15.9) and in 80 sex- and age-matched full-terms the frequency of atopic diseases and of positive skin tests to 8 food and 6 inhalant allergens was determined. The two groups did not differ as to overall percentages of cutipositive subjects and patients with atopic diseases. In particular, frequencies of positive skin tests to foods and of atopic dermatitis (the peak prevalence of which occurs early in infancy) were similar in preterm (16.2 and 7.5%, respectively) and full-term (13.7 and 5.0%, respectively) infants. We suggest that preterm infants fed

Iron-Rich Complementary Foods: Imperative for All Infants.

Nearly 1 in 5 (18%) infants in the United States is not consuming sufficient iron. A deficiency of iron during early life may be associated with long-term neurodevelopmental consequence(s). The 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA) are the first DGA to address recommendations for children under 2 y of age. The 2020 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee scientific report includes food-group combinations emphasizing iron-rich foods for 6-12-mo-old infants, but these examples did not meet criteria to establish DGA recommended dietary patterns; consequently, iron-rich dietary patterns f

Cytokine profile after oral food challenge in infants with food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Although food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome (FPIES) is supposed to be caused by inflammation, the role of cytokines has not yet been clarified. METHODS: To elucidate the role of cytokines in the development of symptoms and abnormal laboratory findings at an oral food challenge (OFC), changes in serum cytokine levels were analyzed for 6 OFCs in 4 patients with FPIES. The result of OFC was judged positive if any gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms (vomiting, diarrhea, or bloody stool) were induced. RESULTS: Among 11 cytokines profiled, serum levels of interleukin (IL)-2, IL-5,

The neighborhood food environment modifies the association between infant feeding and childhood obesity.

BACKGROUND: The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) issues infant formula to infants who are not fully breastfed, and prior research found elevated obesity risk among children receiving lactose-reduced infant formula with corn syrup solids (CSSF) issued by WIC. This study was conducted to evaluate associations between a broader set of specialty infant formulas issued by WIC and child obesity risk, whether neighborhood context (e.g. neighborhood food environment) modifies associations, and whether racial/ethnic disparities in obesity are partly explained

Emerging of Multidrug-Resistant Cronobacter sakazakii Isolated from Infant Supplementary Food in China.

Cronobacter is a foodborne pathogen associated with severe infections in restricted populations and particularly with high mortality in neonates and infants. The prevalence and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) phenotype of Cronobacter cultured from powdered infant formula and supplementary food were studied. The virulence factors, AMR genes, and genomic environments of the multidrug-resistant isolates were further studied. A total of 1,055 Cronobacter isolates were recovered from 12,105 samples of powdered infant formula and supplementary food collected from 29 provinces between 2018 and 2019 in

Infant gut microbiota and food sensitization: associations in the first year of life.

BACKGROUND: The gut microbiota is established during infancy and plays a fundamental role in shaping host immunity. Colonization patterns may influence the development of atopic disease, but existing evidence is limited and conflicting. OBJECTIVE: To explore associations of infant gut microbiota and food sensitization. METHODS: Food sensitization at 1 year was determined by skin prick testing in 166 infants from the population-based Canadian Healthy Infant Longitudinal Development (CHILD) study. Faecal samples were collected at 3 and 12 months, and microbiota was characterized by Illumina 16

Maternal milk intake by infant rats temporarily denied acces to other food sources.

The onset of the weaning period for infant rats was artificially postponed to the 24th day of life by denying the young access to solid food and/or water. Study of 85-Sr transfer in the maternal milk showed that the artificial shift in the initiation of weaning did not influence the time of its termination. The weaning period, defined as the time between the first intake of solid food and the last intake of maternal milk, was shortened to about 4 days in these young. We also found that the young did not compensate the lack of solid food by a higher maternal milk intake, but that they tried to

Case Report: Nephrocalcinosis in an infant due to vitamin-D food supplement overdose.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin D is a vital lipophilic vitamin that plays a pivotal role in calcium regulation, bone metabolism, and overall health. It is of the utmost importance to maintain appropriate serum levels of vitamin D from the moment of birth. The recommended daily intake for infants under the age of 12 months is 400 IU. In Europe, vitamin D is available in two forms: as a medicinal product and as a food supplement. The food supplement market is experiencing rapid growth, yet it is characterised by a lack of harmonised regulations, which may give rise to potential risks associated with their

Syphilis in an Infant Acquired by Mouth-to-Mouth Transfer of Prechewed Food.

A 2-year-old infant boy presented with a large ulcerative lesion on his tongue. The grandmother who cared for the boy was in the habit of chewing food before giving it to the boy and had active syphilis. The infant was diagnosed with acquired early syphilis, which had been transmitted by prechewed food from his grandmother. Prechewing food is a custom in most parts of China. Prechewing an infant's food could be an avenue of disease transmission, although this is not fully recognized. No studies have been conducted to evaluate prechewed food as a disease transmission route.
