Protective Effect of Alkaline Phosphatase Supplementation on Infant Health.

Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) is abundant in raw milk. Because of its high heat resistance, ALP negative is used as an indicator of successful sterilization. However, pasteurized milk loses its immune protection against allergy. Clinically, ALP is also used as an indicator of organ diseases. When the activity of ALP in blood increases, it is considered that diseases occur in viscera and organs. Oral administration or injecting ALP will not cause harm to the body and has a variety of probiotic effects. For infants with low immunity, ALP intake is a good prebiotic for protecting the infant's intest

An illustrative case for addressing infant mental health referrals.

PROBLEM: Despite knowing the importance of the early detection of adverse experiences, mental health disorders beginning or occurring during early childhood can be difficult to recognize. To address this gap, this manuscript describes the care of a parent-child dyad utilizing the nursing process in an illustrative case. METHODS: This illustrative case provides a scenario that includes the early detection of infant mental health (IMH) in primary care with referral to a psychiatric mental health advanced practice nurse (PMHNP) and highlights how integrative care with PMHNP can facilitate the us

Shale gas development and infant health: Evidence from Pennsylvania.

This research exploits the introduction of shale gas wells in Pennsylvania in response to growing controversy around the drilling method of hydraulic fracturing. Using detailed location data on maternal addresses and GIS coordinates of gas wells, this study examines singleton births to mothers residing close to a shale gas well from 2003 to 2010 in Pennsylvania. The introduction of drilling increased low birth weight and decreased term birth weight on average among mothers living within 2.5 km of a well compared to mothers living within 2.5 km of a permitted well. Adverse effects were also det

Prenatal drug use and the production of infant health.

We estimate the effect of illicit drug use during pregnancy on two measures of poor infant health: low birth weight and abnormal infant health conditions. We use data from a national longitudinal study of urban parents that includes postpartum interviews with mothers, hospital medical record data on the mothers and their newborns, and information about the neighborhood in which the mother resides. We address the potential endogeneity of prenatal drug use. Depending on how prenatal drug use is measured, we find that it increases low birth weight by 4-6 percentage points and that it increases th

[Mother-infant mental health from viewpoint of relationship disturbance].

Infants can adapt themselves and their relationship with their caregivers in a way incomparable to any other stage in life. Infants are innately motivated to communicate with people and to actively take part in human social interaction. The question is how to provide an environment that facilitates such potentials for each particular infant and its family. Japan strove to improve the physical aspect of maternal and infant care after the second World War and yielded a nation-wide perinatal and infant screening system that produced a world minimum infant mortality rate and more than 80% complian

Anticipatory guidance in infant oral health: rationale and recommendations.

If appropriate measures are applied early enough, it may be possible to totally prevent oral disease. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that infants be scheduled for an initial oral evaluation within six months of the eruption of the first primary tooth but by no later than 12 months of age. The rationale for this recommendation is provided, although the recommendation itself is not universally accepted. Specific recommendations include elimination of bottles in bed, early use of soft-bristled toothbrushes (with parental supervision) and limitation of high-carbohydrate foo

Understanding the impact of maternal and infant nutrition on infant/child health: multiethnic considerations, knowledge translation, and future directions for equitable health research.

A mother's intrauterine environment influences her health and that of her offspring, at birth and in the future. Herein, we present an overview of our Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR)-funded grant "Understanding the impact of maternal and infant nutrition on infant/child health"-set within The NutriGen Birth Cohort Alliance. NutriGen is a consortium of four Canadian prospective birth cohorts representing >5000 mother-child pairs of diverse ethnic groups including South Asians, White Europeans, and Indigenous peoples. We summarize our objectives and main findings on outcomes of mat

Health behaviors and infant health outcomes in homeless pregnant women in the United States.

OBJECTIVE: To describe selected demographics; maternal health behaviors before, during, and after pregnancy; and infant health outcomes among homeless women in the United States. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Analyses are based on Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System data from 31 participating states from 2000 to 2007 that were linked to birth certificate data, which contain demographic and medical information collected through the state's vital records system. Responses were then weighted to be representative of all women who gave birth in each state during that year. Assessment of these data

[Standardised measuring the health of infants and toddlers in community health services].

Standardised measures are needed in the general child health surveillance. A standardised record with manualised guidelines have been created for use in the existing services of community health nurses, to collect epidemiological data and improve the quality of regional child health surveillance. The record has been used since 2000, and currently one third of the Danish child population is included. Research findings suggest targets of intervention towards risk trajectories of overweight, weight faltering, eating problems and neuro-developmental disorders.

Health burden of pertussis in infants and children.

In countries with high rates of vaccination against pertussis, the incidence of this disease has decreased dramatically compared with the prevaccine era. However, pertussis still occurs in these countries, and severe morbidity and mortality are greatest among infants, particularly those who are unimmunized or incompletely immunized. Pertussis in older children and adults is perceived by many as being a mild disease, but it is a significant health burden in persons of all ages. Infants with pertussis experience the highest rates of hospitalization, complications and death. Severe complications

From mother to infant: predicting infant temperament using maternal mental health measures and tabular machine learning models.

BACKGROUND: Negative emotionality is a core dimension of infant temperament, characterized by heightened distress, reactivity, and difficulty with self-regulation. It has been consistently associated with later behavioral and emotional difficulties. Emerging evidence suggests that maternal mental health (MMH) in the postpartum period may influence infant temperament. However, few studies have applied machine learning (ML) methods to examine the predictive capacity of MMH profiles for early infant emotional development. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate whether postpartum maternal de

Prenatal exposure to PM2.5 and infant health: Evidence from Quebec.

We examine the effects of prenatal exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) on birth outcomes in a low-pollution setting. We combine administrative birth records in Quebec between 2008 and 2015 with air quality monitoring data and linked tax records in h neighborhood-by-quarter fixed effects models. While we find little evidence that prenatal PM2.5 exposure substantially affects birth outcomes on average at the population level, we unmask important heterogeneity. Constructing a cumulative socioeconomic vulnerability index, we find that in most vulnerable families a 1μg/m3 increase in averag

Associations of Adverse Childhood Experiences With Pregnancy and Infant Health.

INTRODUCTION: Adverse childhood experiences are associated with a host of negative outcomes; however, few have studied cumulative adverse childhood experiences in the context of pregnancy and infant health. This study examines state-level prevalence of adverse childhood experiences and associations with pregnancy- and infant health‒related indicators. METHODS: The study used 2016-2018 Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System population-based data from 5 states. Analyses were conducted for individual states and grouped states using similar adverse childhood experience items. Thirteen advers

Positive feelings during pregnancy, early feeding practices, and infant health.

BACKGROUND: Early parenting practices, such as infant feeding, can affect children's physical health. Additionally, negative prenatal maternal affect can influence feeding choices, such as breast-feeding, and can have a detrimental effect on children's health. Little is known, however, about the contribution of positive maternal affect during pregnancy on feeding practices and children's health. METHODS: This study explored whether positive prenatal feelings influenced children's health during the first 18 months, and whether early feeding practices mediated the relationship between these two

PoopMD, a Mobile Health Application, Accurately Identifies Infant Acholic Stools.

Biliary atresia (BA) is the leading cause of pediatric end-stage liver disease in the United States. Education of parents in the perinatal period with stool cards depicting acholic and normal stools has been associated with improved time-to-diagnosis and survival in BA. PoopMD is a mobile application that utilizes a smartphone's camera and color recognition software to analyze an infant's stool and determine if additional follow-up is indicated. PoopMD was developed using custom HTML5/CSS3 and wrapped to work on iOS and Android platforms. In order to define the gold standard regarding stool co

Reliable Assessors of Infant Cranial Asymmetry in Child Health Care.

INTRODUCTION: Acquired cranial asymmetry is prevalent in infants today and largely attributed to the supine sleep position recommended for infant safety. There is a risk of permanent cranial asymmetry, so prevention and early detection are important. A prevention project was initiated in Sweden, and an intervention was planned. The aim of this study was to evaluate reliability of assessors judging infant cranial asymmetry in order to evaluate if they could be considered reliable interchangeable assessors in the planned intervention. MATERIALS AND METHODOLOGY: Five assessors were taught how to

Maternal health, breast-feeding and infant nutrition in Australian aborigines.

Undernutrition is widespread in Australian Aboriginal infants and children and is associated with high rates of infections, particularly of the respiratory and gastrointestinal systems. Maternal ill-health and undernutrition seem to be neglected factors which contribute to the high incidence of low birthweight in Aboriginal babies and to their poor growth in the first five years of life. More effective preventive programmes are needed to help overcome these problems.
