Infectious diseases consultations from general internal medicine physicians in Japan: A descriptive single-center study.

In Japan, general internal medicine (GIM) physicians must be aware of frequently encountered infections because of the shortage of infectious disease (ID) specialists. However, there are currently no epidemiological data on this subject. This study aimed to describe the frequency and pattern of ID consultations requested by GIM physicians in Japan. This is a 3-year retrospective review of the ID consultations requested by GIM physicians in Japan at a community-based acute tertiary care teaching hospital in Tokyo from April 2018 to March 2021. Demographic data, such as reasons for consultation,

A Collaborative Intervention Between Emergency Medicine and Infectious Diseases to Increase Syphilis and HIV Screening in the Emergency Department.

BACKGROUND: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are a common reason for evaluation in the emergency department (ED). Given the overlapping risk factors for STIs, patients screened for gonorrhea and chlamydia should be tested for syphilis and HIV. Syphilis and HIV testing rates in the ED have been reported to be low. The study objective was to examine whether collaboration between emergency medicine (EM) and infectious disease (ID) providers improved syphilis and HIV testing in the ED. METHODS: A multidisciplinary team of EM and ID providers was formed to identify and address barriers to sy

FBP2 and Talin-1 are potential protein markers for Mongolian medicine symptom evaluation in viral infectious diseases.

BACKGROUND: Influenza, measles, and mumps are common viral infectious diseases in Mongolia. The traditional Mongolian medicine (TMM) classified them as warm disease, and still plays a major role in the diagnoses and treatments. METHODS: To interpret the connotation of the complex theoretical system in TMM with scientific technique, in this study, a high throughput mass spectrometry was used to identify potential protein markers of TMM symptom types. Fifty venous blood samples were drawn from influenza, measles and mumps patients. Differential proteins between samples of patients diagnosed as

Intravenous immune globulin in septic shock: a Canadian national survey of critical care medicine and infectious disease specialist physicians.

PURPOSE: This national survey evaluated the perceived efficacy and safety of intravenous immune globulin (IVIG) in septic shock, self-reported utilization patterns, barriers to use, the population of interest for further trials and willingness to participate in future research of IVIG in septic shock. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey of critical care and infectious diseases physicians across Canada. We summarized categorical item responses as counts and proportions. We developed a multivariable logistic regression model to identify physician-level predictors of IVIG use in septi

[Salmonella food poisoning treated at the Infectious Disease Clinic, Institute of Internal Medicine, Medical Academy, in Cracow 1983-1986].

In the years 1983-1986 in the Department of Infectious Diseases Medical Academy in Cracow 189 adult patients were treated for salmonellosis. A significant rise was noted in the number of cases in recent years. The most frequent pathogen was Salmonella enteritidis. The clinical pattern of salmonellosis was similar to that described in preceding years. The disease was associated with increased urea level and decreased sodium level in serum, appearance of young cell forms in white blood cell count, and acetonuria. Most convalescents were discharged with positive results of stool cultures.

Thoughts, beliefs and concepts concerning infectious childhood diseases of physicians practicing homeopathic, anthroposophic and conventional medicine - a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Physicians who include complementary medicine in their practice are thought to have an understanding of health and disease different from that of colleagues practicing conventional medicine. The aim of this study was to identify and compare the thoughts and concepts concerning infectious childhood diseases (measles, mumps, rubella, chickenpox, pertussis and scarlet fever) of physicians practicing homeopathic, anthroposophic and conventional medicine. METHODS: This qualitative study used semistructured interviews. Participating physicians were either general practitioners or pediat

Fucosyltransferase Gene Polymorphisms and Lewisb-Negative Status Are Frequent in Swedish Newborns, With Implications for Infectious Disease Susceptibility and Personalized Medicine.

BACKGROUND: Single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the fucosyltransferase genes FUT2 and FUT3 have been associated with susceptibility to various infectious and inflammatory disorders. FUT variations influence the expression of human histo-blood group antigens (HBGAs) (H-type 1 and Lewis), which are highly expressed in the gut and play an important role in microbial attachment, metabolism, colonization, and shaping of the microbiome. In particular, FUT polymorphisms confer susceptibility to specific rotavirus and norovirus genotypes, which has important global health implications. METHODS:

Travel has been increasing globally since the COVID-19 pandemic ended, including travel from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries to international destinations. This creates unique risks for travelers, who may return with various infectious diseases. Travel medicine is a well-established medical specialty worldwide; however, it has only recently been introduced within the GCC, with limited healthcare and public awareness of the importance of these services in preventing infectious diseases among international travelers. This document presents travel medicine recommendations for practic

Diagnosis and Treatment of Leishmaniasis: Clinical Practice Guidelines by the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) and the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (ASTMH).

It is important to realize that leishmaniasis guidelines cannot always account for individual variation among patients. They are not intended to supplant physician judgment with respect to particular patients or special clinical situations. The IDSA and ASTMH consider adherence to these guidelines to be voluntary, with the ultimate determinations regarding their application to be made by the physician in the light of each patient's individual circumstances.

Subcutaneously administered antibiotics: a national survey of current practice from the French Infectious Diseases (SPILF) and Geriatric Medicine (SFGG) society networks.

A national survey was performed to explore antibiotic prescription by the subcutaneous (sc) route among French infectious diseases and geriatric practitioners. Among the participating physicians, 367 (96.1%) declared administering sc antibiotics at some point. Ceftriaxone was prescribed sc by all but one, and ertapenem, teicoplanin, aminoglycosides and amoxicillin by 33.2%, 39.2%, 35.1% and 15.3%, respectively. The sc route was resorted to mainly in case of unavailable oral, intravenous or intramuscular routes, especially during palliative care. Pain, skin necrosis and lack of efficacy were th
