Too Much on Your "Plate"? Spectrum of Pathologies Involving the Tectal Plate.

The tectal plate comprises the posterior portion of the midbrain, borders the quadrigeminal cistern, and includes the superior and inferior colliculi. Benign and malignant pathologies occurring in this location may lead to aqueductal stenosis, obstructive hydrocephalus, and Parinaud syndrome. Both computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging can be used to further characterize lesions involving the tectal plate. In this pictorial essay, we review various tectal plate lesions and their imaging features.

Tinnitus and hearing loss in pineal region tumours.

The authors report an underestimated symptom and sign arising in pineal region tumours: tinnitus and hearing loss. It has been observed in 13 out of 72 pineal region tumours (18%). Three illustrative cases are reported in this paper. The inferior colliculi, the structure more dense in fibres than any other auditory brain stem site and at which majority of the acoustic pathways relay, is closely adjacent to the pineal body. Displacement of this structure may be responsible for acoustic symptoms together with common visual symptoms.

The uptake of [14C]deoxyglucose into brain of young rats with inherited hydrocephalus.

The effect of hydrocephalus on cerebral glucose utilization as reflected by deoxyglucose uptake has been examined in rats with inherited hydrocephalus at 10, 20, and 28 days after birth using a semiquantitative method. Injection of [14C]deoxyglucose intraperitoneally was followed by freezing the brain, sectioning, and quantitative autoradiography of 10 brain regions. Brain [14C] concentration, cortical thickness, and plasma glucose concentrations were measured. Maximal thinning of the cerebral cortex had already occurred by 10 days after birth, although obvious symptoms such as gait disturbanc

Research progress of the inferior colliculus: from Neuron, neural circuit to auditory disease.

The auditory midbrain, also known as the inferior colliculus (IC), serves as a crucial hub in the auditory pathway. Comprising diverse cell types, the IC plays a pivotal role in various auditory functions, including sound localization, auditory plasticity, sound detection, and sound-induced behaviors. Notably, the IC is implicated in several auditory central disorders, such as tinnitus, age-related hearing loss, autism and Fragile X syndrome. Accurate classification of IC neurons is vital for comprehending both normal and dysfunctional aspects of IC function. Various parameters, including dend

Differentiation between brain lesions in experimental thiamine deficiency.

Dietary deprivation of thiamine combined with pyrithiamine administration in rats was used for pathophysiological and morphological investigations. The animals passed through three different symptomatic stages, ranging from slight neurological abnormalities to generalized seizures from day 8 up to day 11. Hypothermia was a consistent finding during the second week. Histological examination revealed two types of neuropathological lesions in the rats. Those in the colliculi inferiores and the vestibular nuclei were characterized by a bullous spongiform appearance of the neuropil with severely da

Study of the inferior colliculus in patients with schizophrenia by magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

INTRODUCTION. Previous studies have suggested morphometric and functional abnormalities in the inferior colliculus in patients with schizophrenia. Auditory hallucinations are one of the central symptoms in schizophrenia. In this complex and multidimensional event both attention and emotion are thought to play a key role. AIM. To study metabolic changes in the inferior colliculus, a nucleus integrated in the auditory pathway, in patients with schizophrenia and the possible relationship with auditory hallucinations. SUBJECTS AND METHODS. Magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging studies were perf

Neurodegeneration in thiamine deficient rats-A longitudinal MRI study.

Selective neurodegeneration accompanied by mitochondrial dysfunction characterizes neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. Thiamine deficiency (TD) in rats is a model for the study of cellular and molecular mechanisms that lead to selective neuronal loss caused by chronic oxidative deficits. Neurodegeneration in TD-rats develops over a period of 12 to 14 days and can be partially reversed by thiamine administration. The aim of this study was to characterize the in-vivo progression of neurodegeneration and the neuronal rescue processes in TD using T(2) magnetic

Degeneration and gliosis in rat retina and central nervous system following 3,3'-iminodipropionitrile exposure.

3,3'-Iminodipropionitrile (IDPN) exposure causes a neurofilamentous axonopathy and olfactory, audiovestibular and visual toxicity. Many events relevant to these effects and the neurotoxic properties of nitriles as a class remain to be elucidated. We characterized the gliosis associated with the IDPN-induced retinal degeneration in comparison to other effects on the visual and central nervous systems. Gliosis was quantified using an ELISA for the intermediate filament protein, glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP). IDPN (0-400 mg kg-1 day-1x3 days, i.p.) caused corneal opacity and dose- and ti

"Mickey Mousing" in the Brain: Motion-Sound Synesthesia and the Subcortical Substrate of Audio-Visual Integration.

Motion-sound synesthesia is characterized by illusory auditory sensations linked to the pattern and rhythms of motion (dubbed "Mickey Mousing" as in cinema) of visually experienced but soundless object, like an optical flow array, a ball bouncing or a horse galloping. In an MRI study with a group of three synesthetes and a group of eighteen control participants, we found structural changes in the brains of synesthetes in the subcortical multisensory areas of the superior and inferior colliculi. In addition, functional magnetic resonance imaging data showed activity in motion-sensitive regions,

Development and resolution of brain lesions caused by pyrithiamine- and dietary-induced thiamine deficiency and alcohol exposure in the alcohol-preferring rat: a longitudinal magnetic resonance imaging and spectroscopy study.

Wernicke's encephalopathy (WE) is characterized by lesions in thalamus, hypothalamus (including mammillary nuclei), and inferior colliculi, results in serious disabilities, has an etiology of thiamine deficiency, is treatable with thiamine, and occurs most commonly with alcoholism. Despite decades of study, whether alcohol exposure exacerbates the neuropathology or retards its resolution remains controversial. To examine patterns of brain damage and recovery resulting from thiamine deprivation with and without alcohol exposure, we conducted in vivo magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and magnetic

Electron microscopy demonstrating noise exposure alters synaptic vesicle size in the inferior colliculus of cat.

CONTEXT: White noise is known to have detrimental effects on different brain regions, especially auditory regions, including inferior colliculus. Although the basis for such alterations has been hypothesized to result from abnormalities in neurotransmitter release, the mechanism is unclear. The final step in neurotransmission is the docking and transient fusion of synaptic vesicles at the base of cup-shaped lipoprotein structures called porosomes at the presynaptic membrane and the consequent release of neurotransmitters. Earlier studies in cat brain document altered morphology of the secretor

An anomaly in the auditory brain stem projections of hypopigmented ferrets.

The number of cochlear nucleus (CN) neurones projecting to the ipsi- and contralateral inferior colliculus (IC) was studied in darkly pigmented and hypopigmented ferrets by the retrograde transport of wheat germ agglutinin-horseradish peroxidase. The contralateral projection in all divisions of the CN of both albino and 'red eyed' ferrets was normal. However, the ipsilateral projection from the anteroventral CN was significantly smaller in albino than in pigmented ferrets. The volume of each division of the CN was also measured and was found to be the same in albinos as in pigmented animals. T

Identifying neuron types and circuit mechanisms in the auditory midbrain.

The inferior colliculus (IC) is a critical computational hub in the central auditory pathway. From its position in the midbrain, the IC receives nearly all the ascending output from the lower auditory brainstem and provides the main source of auditory information to the thalamocortical system. In addition to being a crossroads for auditory circuits, the IC is rich with local circuits and contains more than five times as many neurons as the nuclei of the lower auditory brainstem combined. These results hint at the enormous computational power of the IC, and indeed, systems-level studies have id

Neonatal exposure to monosodium glutamate results in impaired auditory brainstem structure and function.

Excitotoxic injury during the neonatal period has been shown to result in neurodegenerative changes in several different brain regions. Exposure to monosodium glutamate (MSG) during the first two postnatal weeks results in glutamate neurotoxicity in the cochlea and has been shown to result in damage to cochlear hair cells and fewer neurons in the spiral ganglion. Further, we have shown that such exposure results in fewer neurons in the cochlear nucleus and superior olivary complex and abnormal expression of the calcium binding proteins calbindin and calretinin. Based on these findings, we hypo

Inhibition of central auditory response.

Sulitable electrical stimulaltion of the region of the decussation of the olivocochlear bundles, which supply efferent innervation to the organ of Corti, was found to abolish the response of the auditory cortex to a click, without changing the responses (N(1) and N(2)) of the eighth nerve in cats. At higher stimulation values the eighth nerve responses also were abolished, and at intermediate stimulus values responses at the medial geniculate and inferior colliculus were suppressed.

Central neural control of blood pressure and cardiac arrhythmias during subarachnoid hemorrhage in rats.

Sudden death may follow subarachnoid hemorrhage which indicates involvement of neural mechanisms connected with the cardiovascular system. Since various regions of the brain mediate blood pressure and heart rate changes, these parameters and heart rhythm could be affected due to a subarachnoid hemorrhage near the circle of Willis which surrounds the hypothalamus, the highest center for autonomic control. To investigate this in the control group, intracranial pressure, blood pressure, and electrocardiogram were measured before and after a simulated subarachnoid hemorrhage; blood pressure and el

Case report: neuropathology of methyl bromide intoxication.

The neuropathological findings in a man and his dog both of whom died after acute exposure to methyl bromide are presented. The dog had cerebral oedema, most marked in the depths of cortical sulci. The man survived 30 days after the initial illness and his brain contained well-defined symmetrical lesions in the mammillary bodies and inferior colliculi. He also had a peripheral neuropathy and lymphocytic thyroiditis. The pathology in the central nervous system has features resembling Wernicke's encephalopathology; the mechanism by which methyl bromide may produce such lesions is discussed.
