In mammals, efferent projections to the cochlear receptor are constituted by olivocochlear (OC) fibers that originate in the superior olivary complex. Medial and lateral OC neurons make synapses with outer hair cells and with auditory nerve fibers, respectively. In addition to the OC system, there are also descending projections from the auditory cortex that are directed towards the thalamus, inferior colliculus, cochlear nucleus, and superior olivary complex. Olivocochlear function can be assessed by measuring a brainstem reflex mediated by auditory nerve fibers, cochlear nucleus neurons, and

We report the distribution of serotonin immunoreactive (5-HT-ir) structures in the brain of the adult Senegalese sole, Solea senegalensis, using the streptavidin-biotin-peroxidase complex immunohistochemical method. We have found a wide distribution of immunoreactive fibers throughout the entire brain. 5-HT-ir cell bodies appeared restricted to some periventricular nuclei associated with the diencephalic recesses, and in the rhombencephalic reticular formation and inferior olivary region. Specifically, cerebrospinal fluid-contacting serotoninergic cells were found within the pars dorsalis and

BACKGROUND: Hypertrophic olivary degeneration (HOD) occurs because of posterior fossa or brainstem lesions that disrupt the dentato-rubro-olivary tract, well known as the Guillain-Mollaret triangle. Clinical and radiologic hallmarks of this condition are palatal myoclonus and T2 hyperintensity of the inferior olivary complex on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), respectively. Because symptomatic HOD can complicate the recovery of patients with posterior fossa or brainstem lesions, the purpose of this study is to evaluate clinical and imaging findings of patients with HOD.
METHODS: Sixteen pati

A 64-year-old Japanese woman showed an initially aphasic disturbance followed by complete mutism, progressive dementia, parkinsonism and muscular atrophy. Autopsy revealed localized cortical atrophy confined to the pars triangularis, pars opercularis of the inferior frontal gyrus, supramarginal and angular gyri of the inferior parietal lobe, precuneus and posterior half of the middle and inferior temporal gyrus predominantly on the left hemisphere. The right cerebellar hemisphere showed crossed cerebellar atrophy with shrinkage of the right middle cerebellar peduncle. In the atrophied cerebral

The connections of the lateral terminal nucleus (LTN) of the accessory optic system (AOS) of the marmoset monkey were studied with anterograde 3H-amino acid light autoradiography and horseradish peroxidase retrograde labeling techniques. Results show a first and largest LTN projection to the pretectal and AOS nuclei including the ipsilateral nucleus of the optic tract, dorsal terminal nucleus, and interstitial nucleus of the superior fasciculus (posterior fibers); smaller contralateral projections are to the olivary pretectal nucleus, dorsal terminal nucleus, and LTN. Binding of [125I]-Bolton-Hunter substance P ([125I]-BHSP), [125I]-neurokinin A and [3H]-senktide to tachykinin NK(1), NK(2) and NK(3) receptors, respectively, was examined in caudal brainstem sections of 10-week-old rats pretreated as neonates (P2) with capsaicin (50 mg/kg, s.c.) or vehicle. [125I]-BHSP binding was localised to the nucleus of the solitary tract (NTS), hypoglossal nucleus and inferior olivary complex, whereas [125I]-neurokinin A and [3H]-senktide binding were confined to the NTS. The distribution and density of binding sites were similar in vehicle- and capsaicin-pretreated rat

INTRODUCTION: We report a case of primary pyruvate dehydrogenase complex deficiency (PPDCD) presenting with prenatal neuroimaging features highly suggestive of cytomegalovirus (CMV) fetopathy, highlighting an important alternative diagnosis when infectious investigations are negative.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 32-year-old patient was referred at 29 weeks' gestation for fetal microcephaly, borderline ventriculomegaly, and a short corpus callosum. Detailed neurosonography and fetal MRI demonstrated a clastic pattern including a periventricular echogenic halo, germinolysis pseudocysts, delayed sylvia

Neurons that produce NPS send output to brain regions implicated in circadian function and threat responses, but less is known about the afferent control of NPS neurons. In this study, we used a conventional retrograde tracer, cholera toxin beta subunit (CTb), to identify afferents to the rostral-lateral parabrachial region that contains the main concentration of NPS neurons. We then used Cre-dependent rabies retrograde tracing in Nps-2A-Cre mice to identify inputs specifically to NPS neurons. Nps-expressing neurons receive heavy input from auditory brainstem structures, including the inferior

Inferior olive neurons convey information about sensorimotor events via climbing fibers (CFs) to the cerebellum, but their functional significance remains unclear. Here, we image CF axonal terminals in the cerebellum during a task that exposes mice to force perturbation, movement instruction, and reward; each followed by multiple modes of motor activity. CF activations by sensory events are found to be either generic or informative about the consequences the encoded event has on behavior. The number of informative cells and the information strength are regulated by event modality and the funct

The left external auditory meatus was removed in 4-day-old CBA/J mice; after killing at 45 days, serial sections of the cochleae and brain stem were prepared. From these, the cross-sectional areas of spiral ganglion neurons and of 14 auditory brain stem neuronal types were measured, using a total of 210 neurons of each of the 15 types from both the right and left sides. Nine neuronal types were significantly smaller (P less than 0.01) on the left side: spiral ganglion neurons; globular, small spherical, large spherical, octopus, multipolar, and granule cells of the ventral cochlear nucleus; Pu

The lurcher mutation induces Purkinje cell degeneration in heterozygous mice, and neonatal death in homozygous animals. Using the D6Mit16 Simple Sequence Length Polymorphic marker in F2 hybrids between AKR +/+ mice and B6+/Lc mice, homozygous lurcher fetuses and newborns as well as heterozygous and normal littermates were identified, and their brain morphology was analysed. In homozygous lurcher embryos at embryonic day 18 and neonates the cerebellum was hypotrophic, particularly in the posterior half. Purkinje cells were smaller in the whole cerebellum and showed a maturational delay. Calreti

The ventral division of the medial geniculate nucleus (MGv) receives almost all of its ascending input from the ipsilateral central nucleus of the inferior colliculus (CNIC). In a previous study (Cant and Benson [2006] J. Comp. Neurol. 495:511-528), we made injections of biotinylated dextran amine into the CNIC of the gerbil and demonstrated that it can be divided into two parts. One part (zone 1) receives almost all of its ascending input from the cochlear nuclei, the nuclei of the lateral lemniscus, and the main nuclei of the superior olivary complex; the other part (zone 2) receives inputs

The superior para-olivary nucleus (SPN or SPON) is a prominent nucleus in the superior olivary complex of the auditory brainstem. The cellular composition of the nucleus reportedly differs between species, but a prominent recurring feature is the unusual characteristic to not respond during a sound but at its offset. Blocking glycine has shown that sound-induced inhibition is the mechanism, but the time course of the responsible synaptic events has not been directly measured in vivo. We obtained intracellular recordings in the Mongolian gerbil (meriones unguiculatus) with patch electrodes cont

Auditory evoked brain stem potentials were measured in a patient with occlusion of the basilar artery about 7 mm above its origin, resulting in the "locked-in" syndrome due to infarction at the junction of the lower one third and upper two thirds of the pons. The first three waves of the evoked response originating from the acoustic nerve and auditory nuclei in the caudal pons were normal in wave form, peak latency, and voltage level. Waves IV and V, generated in the region of the lateral lemniscus and inferior colliculus in rostral pons and caudal midbrain, demonstrated prolonged peak latency

In motor neuroscience, state changes are hypothesized to time-lock neural assemblies coordinating complex movements, but evidence for this remains slender. We tested whether a discrete change from more autonomous to coherent spiking underlies skilled movement by imaging cerebellar Purkinje neuron complex spikes in mice making targeted forelimb-reaches. As mice learned the task, millimeter-scale spatiotemporally coherent spiking emerged ipsilateral to the reaching forelimb, and consistent neural synchronization became predictive of kinematic stereotypy. Before reach onset, spiking switched from

Autosomal dominant cerebellar ataxia with progressive macular degeneration is caused by a CAG/glutamine repeat expansion in the SCA7 gene/protein. Neuronal intranuclear inclusions were detected in the brain of an early onset SCA7 case with the 1C2 antibody directed against an expanded polyglutamine domain. Nuclear inclusions were most frequent in the inferior olivary complex, a site of severe neuronal loss in SCA7. They were also observed in other brain regions, including the cerebral cortex, not considered to be affected in the disease. Using confocal microscopy we showed that some inclusions

Aminopeptidase A (APA) generated brain angiotensin III, one of the main effector peptides of the brain renin angiotensin system, exerting a tonic stimulatory effect on the control of blood pressure in hypertensive rats. The distribution of APA in human brain has not been yet studied. We first biochemically characterized human brain APA (apparent molecular mass of 165 and 130 kDa) and we showed that the human enzyme exhibited similar enzymatic characteristics to recombinant mouse APA. Both enzymes had similar sensitivity to Ca(2+). Kinetic studies showed that the K(m) (190 mumol/L) of the human

Sensorineural hearing loss and auditory dysfunction are major sequelae of neonatal hyperbilirubinemia. The sites and cellular effects of bilirubin toxicity in the auditory brainstem pathway are not easily detected. Since altered intracellular calcium homeostasis may play a role in neuronal cell death, we hypothesized that the expression of calcium-binding proteins may be altered in the classic animal model of bilirubin neurotoxicity. The expression of the calcium-binding proteins, calbindin-D28k and parvalbumin, in the brainstem auditory pathway of homozygous recessive jaundiced (jj) Gunn rats

Unilaterally deafened (cochlear destruction) gerbils were exposed to white noise after injection of 14-C-2-deoxyglucose. The labelling patterns were compared to those of unstimulated operated animals, noise stimulated control animals and bilaterally ear plugged animals. Serial transverse, horizontal and tangential autoradiographs through the cortex were analysed. In lesioned animals, labelling was strongly reduced on the side contralateral to the lesion in the high frequency regions of A1 and the anterior auditory field (AAF). We assume that these regions correspond to the high frequency EI ce

Neural hyperactivity induced by sound exposure often correlates with the development of hyperacusis and/or tinnitus. In laboratory animals, hyperactivity is typically induced by unilateral sound exposure to preserve one ear for further testing of hearing performance. Most ascending fibers in the auditory system cross into the superior olivary complex and then ascend contralaterally. Therefore, unilateral exposure should be expected to mostly affect the contralateral side above the auditory brain stem. On the other hand, it is well known that a significant number of neurons have crossing fibers
