Cancer cellulitis.

We have described a case of inflammatory carcinoma involving the skin of the inguinal region in a man with rectal carcinoma. This type of metastatic lesion is most often associated with carcinoma of the breast, but may also be a manifestation of lung, pancreatic, or gastrointestinal neoplasms. The diagnosis should be suspected when a patient with cellulitis is afebrile and has a normal white blood cell count. An additional clue is that the leading edge of the cellulitis may be raised as in erysipelas. Empiric antibiotic treatment is recommended until the diagnosis is confirmed by punch biopsy

In situ quantitation of inflammatory mononuclear cells in ductal infiltrating breast carcinoma. Relation to prognostic parameters.

The authors examined inflammatory mononuclear cells in 10 fibroadenomas and 56 ductal infiltrating type carcinomas of the breast to see whether the distribution of various subpopulations of the mononuclear cells were correlated with known histologic, biochemical, and clinical parameters of the cancers. T cells, B cells, natural killer cells, and macrophages were quantitated on frozen tissue sections, which were stained with monoclonal antibodies, as demonstrated by the immunoperoxidase technique. The carcinomas had significantly higher numbers of T cells, Leu-3+ helper-inducer cells, T8+ cytot

Erysipelatoid Carcinoma.

Erysipelatoid Carcinoma (EC), also known as Inflammatory Metastatic Carcinoma, is a rare form of cutaneous metastasis, secondary to an internal malignancy, more often related to breast cancer. Clinically, the lesion has a well-marked, bound erythematous appearance, much like an infectious process, such as erysipelas and cellulitis, these being the most common differential diagnoses. It is characterized by an acute or subacute appearance with an erythematous plaque, sometimes hot and painful, being more often situated in the primary tumor vicinity, especially in the thorax wall in the region of

Lymphedema in Inflammatory Breast Cancer Patients Following Trimodal Treatment.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL) is a debilitating sequela of breast cancer treatment and is becoming a greater concern in light of improved long-term survival. Inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) is a rare and aggressive malignancy for which systemic therapy, surgery, and radiotherapy remain the standard of care, thereby making IBC patients highly susceptible to developing BCRL. This study evaluated BCRL in IBC following trimodal therapy. METHODS: IBC patients treated from 2016 to 2019 were identified from an institutional database. Patients were excluded if they presented wi

How should radiation be done for inflammatory breast cancer patients?-a narrative review of modern literature.

OBJECTIVE: This review highlights the considerations of the radiation oncologist when managing patients with inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) as well as the radiation oncologist's role as a member of the multi-disciplinary team. BACKGROUND: IBC makes up only 1-4% of all breast cancer diagnoses but incidence is increasing. IBC is diagnosed based on a constellation of clinical features, including the rapid onset of breast erythema and edema (peau d'orange) of one-third or more of the skin of the breast and with a palpable border to the edema. Most published IBC local-regional control rates are

Radiologic evaluation of breast disorders related to pregnancy and lactation.

During pregnancy and lactation, the breast can be affected by a variety of specific and unique disorders, including benign disorders closely related to physiologic changes, inflammatory and infectious diseases, juvenile papillomatosis, and benign and malignant tumors. Patients with pregnancy-associated breast carcinoma tend to have more advanced neoplasms at diagnosis and a poorer prognosis due to delayed diagnosis and a more aggressive biologic pattern. Pregnancy-related Burkitt lymphoma characteristically manifests with bilateral and diffuse involvement of the breasts. Fibroadenoma may manif

Transient overexpression of exogenous APOBEC3A causes C-to-U RNA editing of thousands of genes.

APOBEC3A cytidine deaminase induces site-specific C-to-U RNA editing of hundreds of genes in monocytes exposed to hypoxia and/or interferons and in pro-inflammatory macrophages. To examine the impact of APOBEC3A overexpression, we transiently expressed APOBEC3A in HEK293T cell line and performed RNA sequencing. APOBEC3A overexpression induces C-to-U editing at more than 4,200 sites in transcripts of 3,078 genes resulting in protein recoding of 1,110 genes. We validate recoding RNA editing of genes associated with breast cancer, hematologic neoplasms, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Alzheimer di

Inflammatory Breast Cancer: Is There a Role for Deescalation of Surgery?

Inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) is a rare and aggressive presentation of breast cancer, characterized by higher propensity for locoregional recurrence and distant metastasis compared with non-IBC. Because of extensive parenchymal and overlying dermal lymphatic involvement by carcinoma, IBC is unresectable at diagnosis. Trimodality therapy (neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by modified radical mastectomy and adjuvant comprehensive chest wall and regional nodal radiotherapy) has been a well-accepted treatment algorithm for IBC. Over the last few decades, several innovations in systemic therapy

New Strategies for Locally Advanced Breast Cancer: A Review of Inflammatory Breast Cancer and Nonresponders.

This review explores the new strategies around the management of locally advanced breast cancer (LABC), particularly for nonresponsive tumors and/or initially unresectable tumors at diagnosis, inclusive of inflammatory breast cancer. Nonresponders to neoadjuvant systemic therapy present a unique clinical challenge. Emerging medical therapeutics as well as considerations for use of radiotherapy and/or surgery in this setting are discussed. Specifically, the use of neoadjuvant radiotherapy for LABC and lymphedema prevention with lymphatic reconstruction following axillary lymph node dissection a

Central nervous system filariasis masquerading as a glioma: case report.

Filariasis, an endemic zoonosis in the Southeast Asia region, has been reported to affect various organs as well as the central nervous system (CNS). Inflammatory reactions mimicking those from neoplastic lesions clinically and radiologically have been reported in the breast and urinary bladder. To date, a CNS manifestation of filarial infestation has been reported in the form of meningoencephalitis. The authors here present an interesting case of a young man presenting in status epilepticus, which on radiological evaluation appeared to be a glioma. However, postoperative histopathological exa

Pediatric renal inflammatory myofibroblastic tumours: A case report and review of the etiology and management options.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumours (IMTs) have been described in lung, bladder, spleen, breast, pancreas, liver, colon, spermatic cord, prostate, peripheral nerves, orbit and kidney. Traditionally believed as having a reactive pathogenesis, IMTs are now viewed more as a neoplasm. This report describes a case of a renal IMT in a 14-year-old girl with spina bifida associated neurogenic bladder and a history of recurrent urinary tract infections. This represents a unique case as pediatric renal IMTs are very rare in the literature. We discuss how this patient was managed and how she presented c

Metastatic malignant melanoma presenting as bilateral acute mastitis in a lactating woman: a case report and literature review.

Malignant melanoma, an aggressive neoplasm with high metastatic potential, rarely metastasizes to the breast, with bilateral involvement being exceptionally uncommon. This case report details a 36-year-old postpartum woman who presented with bilateral, symmetrical, rock-hard breast swelling and erythema, initially misdiagnosed as severe lactational mastitis. Comprehensive evaluation ultimately revealed diffusely metastatic malignant melanoma. The primary site was identified as a previously excised cutaneous lesion on the chest wall, originally reported as a benign compound nevus. The patient e

Bilateral breast filariasis mimicking inflammatory breast carcinoma.

Breast is an uncommon site to be affected in filariasis. However, such cases may be encountered in endemic areas. Here, we report a case of filariasis of breast in a 55-year-old woman who was clinically mistaken for inflammatory carcinoma of the breast. Sonomammography revealed classic signs pointing towards the diagnosis of filariasis of breast, which was confirmed with microscopic examination of fine-needle aspirate. Thus, imaging played a pivotal role in correctly diagnosing and further altering the line of management.

Expression of CD73 is associated with tumor progression and intratumoral inflammation in breast cancer.

CD73 is a lymphocyte differentiation antigen and highly expressed in many human solid tumors. CD73 is known to be associated with tumor progression, but its role in human breast cancer is still under investigation. The aims of this study were to evaluate the expression of CD73 in human breast cancer and to analyze its prognostic significance in breast cancer. A total of 198 patients who underwent surgery for the treatment of primary breast cancer were enrolled. Tissue microarrays (TMA) were constructed with breast cancer tissues and immunohistochemical staining for CD73 was performed on TMA ti

Xanthogranulomatous Breast Mass: An Unusual Presentation.

Xanthogranulomatous inflammatory reactions are benign inflammatory processes characterized by aggregating lipid-laden foamy macrophages. Although cases have been reported in different organ systems, these rare reactions predominantly occur in the kidney and gallbladder. We present a 92-year-old female who noticed a palpable, tender mass in the lower inner quadrant of her right breast with no skin changes. She was referred to surgery by her primary care physician on suspicion of malignancy and further evaluation. Ultrasound-guided biopsy, ordered by the primary care provider, revealed a suspici

Dual Role of Cancer Epithelial-Specific TRAF3 in Regulating Breast Cancer Cell Survival and Lymphocyte Activity.

TRAF3 (TNF Receptor Associated Factor 3) is a regulator of NF-κB signaling, acting mainly as an inhibitor of the alternative NF-κB pathway. While TRAF3 has a well-established role in immune function, mainly via B- and T-lymphocyte regulation, its roles in cancer remain unclear. Breast cancer is the most common malignancy in women and a neoplasm displaying high levels of intratumoral heterogeneity. Identifying and understanding key molecules at the interface of breast cancer cells and the immune system is crucial for advancing therapeutic strategies for breast cancer patients. Here, by employin

Metastatic serous carcinoma presenting as inflammatory carcinoma over the breast-Report of two cases and literature review.

Non-mammary metastases involving breast are rare and most commonly involve the breast parenchyma. Infrequently, metastasis from an extramammary primary site presents as inflammatory carcinoma over the breast. Diagnosis of such lesions can be challenging, especially in patients with coexisting primary breast carcinoma. Few such cases have been described in literature; however, none of the previously reported cases had a prior history of primary breast carcinoma. We present 2 patients with history of breast carcinoma and serous carcinoma of ovarian/peritoneal origin that presented with inflammat
