Pandemics throughout the centuries.

Pandemics have ravished the globe periodically, often associated with war, at times commencing as fever and rash, beginning in recorded history in the crowded walled city of Athens during the Peloponnesian War as described in great detail by the Athenian historian and military general Thucydides in 430 BCE. As the world now faces the first major pandemic of the 21st century, we focus on the "plague" commencing in Athens in 430 BCE and the 2 pandemics of the more recent century, which killed more than one million, the Spanish flu of 1918 and the Asian flu of 1957. The latter linked with success

A Double Whammy Pneumonia: The First Reported Case of Concurrent Neisseria meningitidis and SARS-CoV-2 Pneumonia.

Meningococcal pneumonia (MP) is a rare manifestation of meningococcal disease. The MP was first described in 1907 when Neisseria meningitidis (NM) isolates were identified in sputum samples obtained from soldiers with pneumonia. Preceding and concurrent viral infections constitute a major risk for MP. During the 1918-1919 influenza pandemic, a significant increase in MP cases were reported in patients with preceding influenza infection. Despite the end of the last H1N1 influenza pandemic in 2010, seasonal influenza infections still pose a risk for simultaneous MP. History appears to be repeati

Future threat from the past.

Global warming is one of the major challenges facing humanity. The increase in the Earth's temperature and thawing of ancient ice release viable viruses, bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms which were trapped for thousands and millions of years. Such microorganisms may belong to novel microbial species, unknown genotypes of present pathogens, already eradicated pathogens, or even known pathogens that gained extremely robust characteristics due to their subjection to long-term stress. These worries drew more attention following the death of a child by ancient anthrax spores in Siberian in

Anomalies of the 1919 influenza pandemic remain unexplained after 100 years.

The modern world's most lethal single event, the 1918-1921 influenza pandemic, remains an anomaly which is still unexplained. The pandemic's unprecedented mortality was very unevenly distributed with young adults and isolated populations worst affected. Australia was the last continent involved with about 12 000 influenza deaths in 1919. Most cases were clinically unremarkable and recovered quickly, but a small minority developed severe tracheobronchitis compromising oxygenation and immune defences usually dying in the second week of illness. Histopathology showed massive destruction of the re

The 1918 Influenza Virus PB2 Protein Enhances Virulence through the Disruption of Inflammatory and Wnt-Mediated Signaling in Mice.

UNLABELLED: The 1918-1919 influenza pandemic remains the single greatest infectious disease outbreak in the past century. Mouse and nonhuman primate infection models have shown that the 1918 virus induces overly aggressive innate and proinflammatory responses. To understand the response to viral infection and the role of individual 1918 genes on the host response to the 1918 virus, we examined reassortant avian viruses nearly identical to the pandemic 1918 virus (1918-like avian virus) carrying either the 1918 hemagglutinin (HA) or PB2 gene. In mice, both genes enhanced 1918-like avian virus r

[The historical data of pandemic influenza in China from 1918 to 1920 in the Shun Pao].

China was not been isolated from the Spanish flu which begun in 1918. According to the reports on the influenza epidemic in China from 1918 to 1920 in the Shun Pao(, Shanghai Daily), the plague was rampant in China three times, involving at least three cities including Beijing, Tianjin and Shanghai, and more than 14 provinces including Heilongjiang, Jilin, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Anhui and Guangdong. Among them, the first wave of epidemic reports were mainly in June and July 1918, the disease was relatively mild. The second wave outbroke on October to November, with aggravating symptoms and a signi

A paediatric influenza update 100 years after the Skyros island Spanish flu outbreak.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the 1918 Spanish flu outbreak on the Greek Aegean Sea island of Skyros, which devastated its population in less than 30 days. According to Constantinos Faltaits's annals published in 1919, the influenza attack on the island of Skyros commenced acutely 'like a thunderbolt' on the 27th of October, 1918 and was exceptionally severe and fatal. At that time, the viral cause of the influenza had not been detected, while the total number of victims of the Spanish flu outbreak has been estimated to have surpassed 50 million, worldwide. Almost one century after

Origins of the 1918 Pandemic: Revisiting the Swine "Mixing Vessel" Hypothesis.

How influenza A viruses host-jump from animal reservoir species to humans, which can initiate global pandemics, is a central question in pathogen evolution. The zoonotic and spatial origins of the influenza virus associated with the "Spanish flu" pandemic of 1918 have been debated for decades. Outbreaks of respiratory disease in US swine occurred concurrently with disease in humans, raising the possibility that the 1918 virus originated in pigs. Swine also were proposed as "mixing vessel" intermediary hosts between birds and humans during the 1957 Asian and 1968 Hong Kong pandemics. Swine have

[Encephalitis and encephalopathy associated with pandemic flu].

Avian influenza A (H5N1) viruses in birds in parts of Asia, Africa, and Middle East continue to cause human diseases and to pose the threat of human pandemic flu. Pandemic flu is characterized by respiratory symptoms and is a cause of high fatality rates in the younger population. Previous studies have shown that avian influenza A (H5N1) viruses in humans might also target organs other than lungs. Historical records reveal that in 1918, more than 40 million people died due to influenza pandemic; this pandemic was rapidly followed by an epidemic of encephalitis lethargica in 1919. COVID-19 and Spanish flu-18: review of medical and social parallelisms between two global pandemics.

The intrusion of infectious diseases in everyday life forces humans to reassess their attitudes. Indeed, pandemics are able catalyze rapid transitions in scientific knowledge, politics, social behaviors, culture and arts. The current Coronavirus diesease-19 (COVID-19) outbreak has driven an unprecedented interest toward the influenza pandemic of 1918. The issue is whether history can shed light on the best preventive response and future scenarios. The aim of this review is to highlight the parallelism between the two pandemics. Starting from epidemiology and clinical features, but further focu

The matrix segment of the "Spanish flu" virus originated from intragenic recombination between avian and human influenza A viruses.

The 1918 Spanish flu virus has claimed more than 50 million lives. However, the mechanism of its high pathogenicity remains elusive; and the origin of the virus is controversial. The matrix (M) segment regulates the replication of influenza A virus, thereby affecting its virulence and pathogenicity. This study found that the M segment of the Spanish flu virus is a recombinant chimera originating from avian influenza virus and human influenza virus. The unique mosaic M segment might confer the virus high replication capacity, showing that the recombination might play an important role in induci

1918 influenza virus: 100 years on, are we prepared against the next influenza pandemic?

As we commemorate 100 years since the 1918 pandemic, research has advanced our knowledge of influenza virulence and pathogenesis, and has highlighted the role of animal reservoirs in the emergence of pandemic strains. Future efforts in understanding viral ecology, zoonosis and in integrating human and animal epidemiology should aid pandemic preparedness.

Intersecting Pandemics of HIV and SARS-CoV-2: Commentary on the Special Issue.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This editorial introduces this special Global Health Section on the interface of the HIV/AIDS and COVID-19 pandemics. RECENT FINDINGS: Authors of articles in this special issue take on a variety of topics that capture how the acute COVID-19 pandemic affected global efforts towards HIV control, and how co-infection, stigma, and social determinants of disease have affected populations on multiple continents. Two historic pandemics -- HIV/AIDS and COVID-19 -- have affected the world in our lifetimes at a level reminiscent of the 1918-1919 H1N1 influenza pandemic. We have much

Did anomalous atmospheric circulation favor the spread of COVID-19 in Europe?

The current pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is having negative health, social and economic consequences worldwide. In Europe, the pandemic started to develop strongly at the end of February and beginning of March 2020. Subsequently, it spread over the continent, with special virulence in northern Italy and inland Spain. In this study we show that an unusual persistent anticyclonic situation prevailing in southwestern Europe during February 2020 (i.e. anomalously strong positive phase of the North Atlanti

Back to the future: lethal respiratory pandemics in New Guinea.

Lethal respiratory epidemics have torn through Papua New Guinea (PNG) since records began in the 19th century. Such historical epidemics were likely caused by influenza but often exacerbated by secondary bacterial pneumonias. Although PNG largely escaped the 1918-1919 influenza pandemic, major lethal waves were recorded in 1921, 1925, 1931 and 1964. As recently as 1969, thousands died in the PNG highlands from H3N2 influenza and subsequent pneumococcal pneumonias. This pre-independence crisis was met by a major deployment of the Australian Defence Force personnel and aircraft. Currently, vacci

The 2009 influenza pandemic: promising lessons for antiviral therapy for future outbreaks.

The influenza A virus is the main circulating influenza virus in the human population. It can cause disease also in birds and other mammals and is responsible for annual epidemics and occasional pandemics. The most known and deadly pandemic was the "Spanish flu" (influenza type A/H1N1), which struck the human population between 1918 and 1919, with probably the heaviest toll ever recorded in terms of human lives. The most recent flu pandemic, caused in 2009 by the swine-origin reassortant virus (pH1N1), has raised several critical issues in terms of our preparedness in responding fast to new pa

Epidemics and trust: The case of the Spanish Flu.

Recent studies argue that major crises can have long-lasting effects on individual behavior. While most studies focused on natural disasters, we explore the consequences of the global pandemic caused by a lethal influenza virus in 1918-19: the so-called "Spanish Flu." This was by far the worst pandemic of modern history, causing up to 100 million deaths worldwide. Using information about attitudes of respondents to the General Social Survey, we find evidence that experiencing the pandemic likely had permanent consequences in terms of individuals' social trust. Our findings suggest that lower s
