A Public health wound: health and work among children engaged in the worst forms of child labour in the informal sector in Dhaka, Bangladesh: a retrospective analysis of Médecins Sans Frontières occupational health data from 2014 to 2023.

BACKGROUND: Bangladesh has the second highest burden of child labour in South Asia. The informal sector employs most of the children however, data on health including injuries and place of work for children are limited. As the deadline for the Sustainable Development Goals to end child labour is upon us, it is paramount to document the impact of child labour on health. This study aims to contribute to this knowledge gap by presenting medical data from occupational health clinics (OHCs) set up by Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) in a peri-urban area of Dhaka, Bangladesh. METHODS: We did a retros

Job sector and occupational complexity influence on late-life cognitive function among men.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The rapid aging of population in low- and middle-income countries, their economic disadvantages, and the increase in Alzheimer's disease related dementia point to a need to understand cognitive aging of disadvantaged individuals. This research considers the effects of education, occupational complexity, and cognitive engagement on late-life cognitive performance, and how these may vary by economic sector. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We analyze data from the 2012 Mexican Health and Aging Study (MHAS) linked to O*NET (Occupational Information Network) and social secu

'The National Health Insurance scheme would be good and beneficial but I don't trust the system …': a cross-sectional mixed-methods study assessing the awareness and perceptions towards Uganda's proposed National Health Insurance scheme among informal sector workers in Iganga and Mayuge districts, Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Most low-income countries have prioritised implementing national health insurance schemes (NHIs) as a solution to reducing the high out-of-pocket expenditures on health and enhancing access to healthcare, especially among informal sector workers. However, their perceptions remain unexplored in Uganda. This study aimed to assess the awareness and perceptions of the informal sector workers towards the proposed NHIs in Iganga and Mayuge districts, Uganda. METHODOLOGY: A cross-sectional mixed-methods study was conducted in the Iganga and Mayuge districts of eastern Uganda between Apri

Logics of acquiring medicines from informal retailers in four African countries.

BACKGROUND: In sub-Saharan Africa and other low-income contexts, informal medicine markets are widespread. Understanding the drivers of consumer demand is important, especially given the concerns and risks associated with medicines in the informal sector. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to 1) describe the informal medicine sector in four anglophone African countries, and 2) understand why people patronize informal medicine sellers. METHODS: Participant observation was conducted in eight markets (37 market stalls) across Ghana, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, and Uganda, supplemented by data collected dur

Systematic review of health challenges experienced by Indian women engaged in informal labor.

BACKGROUND: The informal economy encompasses all economic activities carried out by workers or economic units that are not adequately covered by formal legal or regulatory frameworks. National data from India indicate that 53.7% of the 308 million unorganized workers are women. Given the multifaceted occupational risks associated with informal employment, women workers in the informal sector are vulnerable to a range of adverse health outcomes. The present study aims to synthesise existing evidence on occupationally related health challenges experienced by Indian women employed in the informal

Strengthening Urban Informal Trading and Improving the Health of Vendors: An Integrated Management Model.

CONTEXT: Within the urban areas, especially the central business districts, informal trading is growing in large numbers, and the informal vendor's health is also at risk. Despite various frameworks developed for this industry, there are few guidance and implementation strategies on how to accomplish better-managed informal trading, mostly one that entails better occupational settings. OBJECTIVE: The goal of the proposed model is to improve the working conditions for informal vendors in South Africa by redesigning the current informal trading management approach, thus ensuring a healthy workp

Crowding out of long-term care insurance: evidence from European expectations data.

Long-term care (LTC) is the largest insurable risk that old-age individuals face in most western societies. However, the demand for LTC insurance is still ostensibly small in comparison with the financial risk. One explanation that has received limited support is that expectations of either 'public sector funding' and 'family support' crowd out individual incentives to seek insurance. This paper aims to investigate further the aforementioned motivational crowding-out hypothesis by developing a theoretical model and by drawing on an innovative empirical analysis of representative European surve

Exploring the roles of informal healthcare providers in urban settings to improve access and quality of care for the urban poor: experience from Bangladesh, Ghana, Nepal, and Nigeria.

Though informal healthcare providers (IHPs), often defined as unregistered and not formally trained, are heavily utilized by low-income urban residents and present an opportunity to address the urban primary care gap, these providers are rarely prioritized or integrated into health systems. This paper explores IHPs' role in urban settings across four rapidly urbanizing low- and middle-income countries: Bangladesh, Nepal, Nigeria, and Ghana, to enhance understanding of their potential within health systems and promote their integration to improve access and quality of care for the urban poor. Quantitative Self-Assessment of Exposure to Solvents among Formal and Informal Nail Technicians in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Participatory research, including self-assessment of exposure (SAE), can engage study participants and reduce costs. The objective of this study was to investigate the feasibility and reliability of a SAE regime among nail technicians. The study was nested in a larger study, which included exposure assessment supervised by experts, i.e., controlled assessment of exposure (CAE). In the SAE approach, ten formal and ten informal nail technicians were verbally instructed to use a passive sampler and complete an activity sheet. Each participant conducted measurements on three consecutive days, wher

Lay people's perceptions of sexually transmitted infections in Uganda.

In order to understand lay people's perceptions of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) focus group discussions and semi-structured interviews were held with community members and patients with STIs in Mbarara and Kampala, Uganda. Symptoms of common STIs and the modes of transmission methods were known. STIs were perceived as naturalistic diseases caused by a tiny insect called akakoko or akawutka, although female infertility, one of the common complications of STIs, was perceived as a supernatural ailment. There was no stigma towards people with AIDS, although stigma towards people with oth

Informal waste collection and municipal waste management in Hungary: A pilot project featuring smartphones to estimate the extent of informally retrieved bulky waste.

Involvement of the Roma population in informal waste collection in the CEE (Central and Eastern Europe) region has barely been researched with collectors as research subjects themselves. This article focuses on collection of bulky municipal waste by predominantly Roma informal waste collectors. A pilot project was implemented in Budapest in 2023 with the aim of assessing the extent of informally retrieved bulky municipal waste otherwise destined for disposal by municipal authorities. This involved the use of smartphones to estimate informal waste accumulation and to monitor selection of waste

Free Market Availability of Rapid Diagnostics Will Empower Communities To Control Malaria in India.

Globally, malaria incidence has declined but further reductions in malaria are not evident in many countries. In addition to the public health approaches for tackling malaria, involvement of the private sector is vital because the private sector plays a central role in healthcare delivery to the masses. In India, malaria management is primarily provided through government programs, nonetheless, significant numbers of fever patients continue to seek healthcare in the private sector. The private sector in India is comprised of formal healthcare (qualified and approved), informal healthcare (unqu

Experiences of membership in munno mubulwadde (your friend indeed) - a novel community-based health insurance scheme in Luwero district in rural central Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Community-Based Health Insurance (CBHI) schemes are recognized as an important health financing pathway to achieving universal health coverage (UHC). Although previous studies have documented CBHIs in low-income countries, the majority of these have been provider-based. Non-provider based schemes have received comparatively less empirical attention. We sought to describe a novel non-provider based CBHI munno mubulwadde (your friend indeed) comprising informal sector members in rural central Uganda to understand the structure of the scheme, the experiences of scheme members in terms

The indispensable intermediaries: a qualitative study of informal caregivers' struggle to achieve influence at and after hospital discharge.

BACKGROUND: The care policy and organization of the care sector is shifting to accommodate projected demographic changes and to ensure a sustainable model of health care provision in the future. Adult children and spouses are often the first to assume care giving responsibilities for older adults when declining function results in increased care needs. By introducing policies tailored to enabling family members to combine gainful employment with providing care for older relatives, the sustainability of the future care for older individuals in Norway is more explicitly placed on the family and

Economic situation of informal caregivers for older adults in the context of changing long-term care policies: a mixed methods study.

BACKGROUND: Long-term care policies across Europe increasingly rely on informal care amid population ageing and constraints in public expenses. Cash-for-care schemes have been introduced to support informal care and alleviate socio-economic differences between caregivers. This mixed methods study investigates the subjective economic experiences of informal caregivers for older adults in Finland, where the policy initiative has gradually shifted the emphasis of care services from public provision to informal care with the support of Informal Care Allowance (ICA). METHODS: Drawing from a nation

Aflatoxin contamination of maize flour in Kenya: Results from multi-city, multi-round surveillance.

Foodborne illness is a major source of the global burden of disease, but public monitoring of hazards in food systems is overwhelmingly focused on the formal sector in high income countries. We contribute to the development of an evidence base on food safety risk in low-income and informal settings by monitoring aflatoxin prevalence in maize flour in Kenya. Aflatoxin is a contaminant which causes liver cancer and has been linked to childhood stunting. We carry out systematic monitoring of formally and informally processed maize flour from a range of retail vendors across ten urban sites in Ken

Factors influencing fever care-seeking for children under five years of age in The Gambia: a secondary analysis of 2019-20 DHS data.

BACKGROUND: Malaria contributes to excess child mortality in The Gambia. Children under five are at risk of severe malaria and death if not treated promptly and appropriately. It is crucial that a child with fever receive appropriate care from a trained provider. The aim was to identify influences on child fever care-seeking in The Gambia to inform malaria control strategies. METHODS: This cross-sectional analysis of The Gambia 2019-20 Demographic and Health Survey used logistic regression analysis to identify associations between source of care for a child with fever (public or private healt
