If we don't look, we won't see: Measuring language development to inform literacy instruction.

Oral language abilities enable children to learn to read, and they predict future academic achievement and life outcomes. However, children with language impairment frequently go unidentified because schools do not systematically measure oral language development. Given that identification paves the way for treatment, schools should increase attention to oral language development, particularly within response to intervention (RTI) frameworks, which aim to prevent learning disabilities by identifying and intervening at early stages. Formal schooling should address language comprehension (in add

Digital, Media, and Information Literacies and the Well-Being of Neurotypical and Neurodivergent Children: A Synthetic Knowledge Synthesis.

Background/Objectives: Children now spend a substantial part of daily life in digital environments, and their digital, media, and information literacies shape their online safety, social-emotional development, and mental health, making these competencies a concern for child public health and preventive paediatric care. This study applies a Synthetic Knowledge Synthesis (SKS) to map how digital, media, and information literacies (hereafter digital literacies) among children have evolved, comparing neurotypical and neurodivergent children. SKS is a semi-automated approach that combines descripti

Exploring adolescents' ability to appraise health information: validation of the self-report short-form Critical Health Literacy Questionnaire.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescents' ability to evaluate health information is an increasingly important area in public health and health promotion; however, there is a scarcity of brief, psychometrically sound self-report tools focused on adolescents' information appraisal abilities. In this study, we aim to validate a unidimensional short form of the Critical Health Literacy for Adolescents Questionnaire (CHLA-QA) domain A and to examine its convergent and known-groups validity. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey among Norwegian students (N = 522; response rate 33%) aged 13-15 years old.

Age-Related Patterns in Health Literacy and Health Information-Seeking Behavior in a Korean Population: Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Health information-seeking behavior (HISB) is a critical component of personal health management. Health literacy (HL) shapes whether and how people seek health information, but its role across age groups remains underexplored. Korea's highly digitalized information environment and rapidly aging population provide an important context for examining age-group differences in HL and HISB. OBJECTIVE: This study examined age-group differences in the association of HL with 2 related stages of HISB-HISB experience and, conditional on engagement, source-based HISB type-and assessed whethe

Readability of Online Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) Information: Health Literacy Implications for Parents Navigating Youth Tackle Football Decisions.

Tackle football is the most participated youth sport in the U.S. with leagues beginning as early as age 5. Exposure to cumulative repetitive head impacts (RHI) over years of play is increasingly viewed as a major contributor to chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a progressive neurodegenerative disease documented in contact sport athletes. Amid growing awareness of CTE, parents may turn to online information to guide decisions about youth tackle football participation. This cross‑sectional study examined the readability of online CTE information. Using the search term, 'CTE,' 68 URLs provi

Improving access to important recovery information for heart patients with low health literacy: reflections on practice-based initiatives.

Evidence exists for the association between health literacy and heart health outcomes. Cardiac rehabilitation is critical for recovery from heart attack and reducing hospital readmissions. Despite this, <30% of people participate in a program. Significant patient, hospital and health system challenges exist to improve recovery through increased heart health literacy. This brief case study reflects and documents practice-based initiatives by Heart Foundation Victoria to improve access to recovery information for patients with low literacy levels. Three key initiatives, namely the Six Steps To C

The solar E-waste challenge: A Zambian case study of informal disposal, counterfeit technologies and low literacy.

The exponential growth of off-grid solar photovoltaic (PV) systems across Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) has significantly improved rural electrification but has also introduced new environmental management challenges related to end-of-life disposal. In Zambia, where over one million solar devices were sold between 2018 and 2022, the short lifespan of many solar kits, often under four years, has resulted in a growing and unregulated stream of solar electronic waste (e-waste). More than 90% of these products are technically repairable yet rarely serviced. This study examines the environmental impacts

Multidimensional Digital Literacy and Quality of Life Among Informal Care Dyads in Malaysia: Cross-Sectional Survey.

BACKGROUND: Digital literacy (DL) is a key determinant of health and social participation in later life. In Malaysia, where population aging and family caregiving are rising, limited digital engagement among older adults may widen the gray digital divide. As caregivers and care recipients are interdependent, their digital capacities may jointly shape each other's quality of life (QoL). OBJECTIVE: This study examined the multidimensional associations between DL and QoL among informal caregivers and care recipients in Malaysia and explored dyadic actor-partner effects. METHODS: A cross-section
