Adolescent Inhalant Abuse Results in Adrenal Dysfunction and a Hypermetabolic Phenotype with Persistent Growth Impairments.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Abuse of toluene products (e.g., glue-sniffing) primarily occurs during adolescence and has been associated with appetite suppression and weight impairments. However, the metabolic phenotype arising from adolescent inhalant abuse has never been fully characterised, and its persistence during abstinence and underlying mechanisms remain unknown. METHODS: Adolescent male Wistar rats (post-natal day 27) were exposed to inhaled toluene (10,000 ppm) (n = 32) or air (n = 48) for 1 h/day, 3 days/week for 4 weeks, followed by 4 weeks of abstinence. Twenty air rats were pair-fed to the

Toxic Leukoencephalopathy due to Inhalational Heroin Abuse.

Heroin-induced spongiform leukoencephalopathy (HSLE) is a rare condition that is strongly associated with heroin vapor inhalation which has become a popular method among heroin addicts because it poses a less immediate danger to the user and makes the drug much easier to use. We present a case of a 22-year-old male who presented with dysarthria and cerebellar symptoms starting, after 3 months of heroin inhalation. Diagnosis was confirmed to be HSLE after extensive diagnostic testing. HSLE is a rare complication of which the pathogenesis is poorly understood. Clinical history and characteristic

Freon inhalational abuse presenting with ventricular fibrillation.

Inhalation of volatile halogenated hydrocarbons may produce life-threatening cardiac and neurological toxicity. A 15-year-old boy developed ventricular fibrillation immediately after intentional inhalation of a fluorinated hydrocarbon from an automobile air conditioner recharge unit. After the use of intravenous bretylium, a hemodynamically stable sinus tachycardia was restored. Aspiration pneumonitis and rhabdomyolysis complicated his hospital course before complete neurological recovery. The mechanism and treatment of cardiac arrhythmias after volatile fluorinated hydrocarbon inhalation are

Atrial fibrillation associated with chocolate intake abuse and chronic salbutamol inhalation abuse.

The use of substances as the substrate for atrial fibrillation is not frequently recognized. Chocolate is derived from the roasted seeds of the plant theobroma cacao and its components are the methylxanthine alkaloids theobromine and caffeine. Caffeine is a methylxanthine whose primary biological effect is the competitive antagonism of the adenosine receptor. Normal consumption of caffeine was not associated with risk of atrial fibrillation or flutter. Sympathomimetic effects, due to circulating catecholamines cause the cardiac manifestations of caffeine overdose toxicity, produce tachyarrhyth

Analytical methods for detecting butane, propane, and their metabolites in biological samples: Implications for inhalant abuse detection.

Worldwide, various inhalants are widely abused for recreational purposes, with butane and propane emerging as among the most commonly misused volatile substances, posing a significant risk of sudden death. The rapid elimination and oxidation of these highly volatile compounds upon inhalation necessitate the identification of butane and propane along with their metabolites in biological samples. Hence, the primary objective of this study is twofold: firstly, to establish a method for analyzing butane, propane, and metabolites, and secondly, to demonstrate the detection window and exposure indic

[Orbital and nasal complications secondary to inhaled cocaine abuse].

The abuse of inhaled cocaine causes chemical sinus pathology by secondary midfacial destruction and necrosis. When midfacial necrosis is already established, other complications may occur related to the proximity of structures such as the orbit or optic nerve. We present the evolution of a young cocaine addict with midfacial destruction, who has had a subperiosteal abscess and optic neuritis over the course of the years. Differential diagnosis and management of these complications are also discussed.

Abused inhalants enhance GABA-mediated synaptic inhibition.

Abused inhalants are widely used, especially among school-age children and teenagers, and are 'gateway' drugs leading to the abuse of alcohol and other addictive substances. In spite of this widespread use, little is known about the effects produced by inhalants on the central nervous system. The similarity in behavioral effects produced by inhalants and inhaled anesthetics, together with their common chemical features, prompted this study of inhalant actions on a well-characterized anesthetic target, GABA synapses. Whole-cell patch clamp recordings were conducted on CA1 pyramidal neurons in r

Viral hepatitis among male amphetamine-inhaling abusers.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have focused on the clandestinely consumed amphetamine as a primary drug. The purpose of this study was to estimate the prevalence of hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection and the related factors in male amphetamine-inhaling abusers. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study. From November 2004 to February 2005, 285 amphetamine-inhaling male subjects at one prison in Taiwan and 285 age-matched healthy men without history of using illicit drugs or tattooing were enrolled. Volatile substance and other drug abuse inhalation in Spain.

OBJECTIVE: Inhalant misuse is the intentional inhalation of volatile substances in order to obtain euphoric, disinhibiting, and exciting effects. Solvents, glues, adhesives, paints, varnishes, paint removers, dry cleaning agents, spray paints, nail polish removers, typewriter correction fluids, and aerosol propellants are common sources of volatile substance abuse. In recent years the abuse of inhalant substances, not only among those who abuse other drugs but also in teenagers and younger children, has been reported. We reviewed retrospectively the cases of inhalant misuse reported to the Spa

A whiff of death: fatal volatile solvent inhalation abuse.

Inhalation abuse of volatile solvents, previously known generically as "glue sniffing," is typically pursued by adolescents. A wide range of legal, easily obtained products containing volatile substances are available for abuse. We report two illustrative cases of fatal volatile substance abuse: gasoline sniffing in a 20-year-old man and aerosol propellant gas inhalation (aerosol air freshener) in a 16-year-old girl with underlying reactive airway disease. Although the ratio of deaths to nonfatal inhalation escapades is extremely low, volatile solvent abuse carries the risk of sudden death due

Nitrite inhalants: patterns of abuse in Baltimore and Washington, D.C.

Nitrite inhalants, as drugs of abuse, have received a new prominence in the literature since their use has been associated with Kaposi's Sarcoma and possibly other manifestations of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Changes in patterns and prevalence of use have not been investigated since the onset of the AIDS epidemic. We have examined the abuse patterns of nitrite inhalants (poppers) in several different groups. The use of poppers among drug abusers in the Baltimore-Washington, D.C. metropolitan area has remained constant over the past 5 years, with the prevalence of use being appr

Explosive burns during abusive inhalation of butane gas.

Explosion burns during abusive inhalation of butane gas rarely occurred in the past, but recently it has become a social problem among groups of teenagers. This cause constitutes 1.6% of admissions due to flame burn at the burn unit of Hallym Medical Center. A retrospective review during a five-year period identified 48 patients. The male to female ratio was 3:1. The mean age of patients was 16 years and 8 months. The places where the accidents occurred were commonly bedrooms or motel rooms. There were nine group settings of 27 patients at the time of the accident. Inhalation injury (n = 12) w

Childhood abuse and the use of inhalants: differences by degree of use.

OBJECTIVES: Using two existing ethnographic studies of drug-involved adults, this study evaluates the association between child-abuse victimization and levels of involvement in inhalant use. METHODS: Historical accounts of childhood exposure to physical or sexual abuse were compared among nonusers of inhalants (n = 197), light inhalant users (n = 64), and heavy inhalant users (n = 24). Crude and adjusted odds ratios were used to compare informants with no history of inhalant use with those having a history of light inhalant use and those having a history of heavy inhalant use. RESULTS: Heavy

Abuse liability and pharmacodynamic characteristics of intravenous and inhaled nicotine.

The potential role of nicotine in tobacco dependence was investigated using the strategies of abuse liability assessment. Eight male volunteer cigarette smokers with histories of drug abuse resided on a research ward for the duration of the study. Each subject was tested with three doses of i.v. nicotine (0.75, 1.5 and 3.0 mg/10-sec infusion) and placebo each test day, and with three doses of inhaled nicotine, in the form of research cigarette smoke (0.4, 1.4 and 2.9 mg estimated yield) and placebo (sham-smoking), given on alternate test days. Each subject was tested on 4 days with both routes

Growth changes after inhalant abuse and toluene exposure: A systematic review and meta-analysis of human and animal studies.

Inhalant abuse is a significant public health issue, particularly for adolescents, the predominant group of inhalant users. Adolescence is a critical growth period, and inhalant abuse has been associated with growth impairments, including reduced body weight and height. However, the extent to which inhalant abuse affects growth remains unquantified, and potential moderators remain unknown. To address this knowledge gap, a systematic review and meta-analysis of clinical human and preclinical animal studies utilizing toluene exposure (the primary solvent in abused products) was conducted. Five-h

Inhaled drugs of abuse enhance serotonin-3 receptor function.

Despite the prevalence of their use, little is currently known of the molecular mechanisms of action of inhaled drugs of abuse. Recent studies have shown effects on NMDA, GABA(A) and glycine receptors in vitro, suggesting that inhalants may exert at least some of their pharmacological effects on ligand-gated ion channels. Enhancement of serotonin-3 receptor function has been shown to play a role in the reinforcing properties of drugs of abuse. We tested the hypothesis that the commonly abused inhaled agents 1,1,1-trichloroethane, trichloroethylene, and toluene enhance serotonin-3 receptor func

Nitrous Oxide Inhalant Abuse: Preliminary Results from a Cross-Sectional Study on Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices of Italian Physicians (2023).

Background and Objectives: Nitrous oxide (N2O) has recently emerged as a cheap alternative to other recreational substances. Although legally available, its chronic use is associated with severe neurological and hematological complications due to the irreversible inactivation of vitamin B12. While no reliable data on abuse of N2O in Italy have been provided to date, we assessed the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of Italian medical professionals on the management of N2O abuse cases.
