X inactivation patterns in two syndromes with probable X-linked dominant, male lethal inheritance.

For Incontinentia pigmenti Bloch-Sulzberger (IP) and Aicardi syndrome, an X-linked dominant transmission with lethality in hemizygous males has been proposed. The typical transition from inflammation to verrucous hypertrophy and hyperpigmented skin areas in IP suggests a gradual replacement of defective cells by normal cells. This would imply a preferential inactivation of the X chromosome carrying the IP gene with a proliferative advantage of this cell population. We have confirmed this hypothesis by demonstrating that the same X chromosome is preferentially active in fibroblasts grown from n

Dual inheritance patterns: A spectrum of non-syndromic inherited retinal disease phenotypes with varying molecular mechanisms.

Inherited retinal diseases (IRDs) encompass a variety of disease phenotypes and are known to display both clinical and genetic heterogeneity. A further complexity is that for several IRD-associated genes, pathogenic variants have been reported to cause either autosomal dominant (AD) or autosomal recessive (AR) diseases. The possibility of dual inheritance can create a challenge for variant interpretation as well as the genetic counselling of patients. This review aims to determine whether the molecular mechanisms behind the dual inheritance of each IRD-associated gene is well established, not

Complex inheritance pattern resembling autosomal recessive inheritance involving a microdeletion in thrombocytopenia-absent radius syndrome.

Thrombocytopenia-absent radius (TAR) syndrome is characterized by hypomegakaryocytic thrombocytopenia and bilateral radial aplasia in the presence of both thumbs. Other frequent associations are congenital heart disease and a high incidence of cow's milk intolerance. Evidence for autosomal recessive inheritance comes from families with several affected individuals born to unaffected parents, but several other observations argue for a more complex pattern of inheritance. In this study, we describe a common interstitial microdeletion of 200 kb on chromosome 1q21.1 in all 30 investigated patients

The first see-through frog created by breeding: description, inheritance patterns, and dermal chromatophore structure.

We have succeeded in creating see-through frogs from natural color mutants of the Japanese brown frog Rana japonica, which usually possesses an ochre or brown back; this coloration enables the organs, blood vessels, and eggs to be observed through the skin without performing dissection. We crossed two kinds of recessive color mutant (black-eyed and gray-eyed) frogs through artificial insemination, and F2 offspring produced frogs whose skin is translucent throughout the life cycle. Three kinds of dermal chromatophores--xanthophores, iridophores, and melanophores--are observed in a layered arran

Inheritance patterns of noise vulnerability and "protectability" in (C57BL/6J × CBA/J) F1 hybrid mice.

BACKGROUND: Interindividual variation in cochlear vulnerability to noise and ototoxins must in part reflect allelic variation in genes that largely remain unknown. Work in our laboratory has shown that young adult CBA/J mice are more vulnerable to cochlear noise injury than are similar-aged mice of other well-studied strains such as C57BL/6J (B6). Conversely, young CBA/J mice are dramatically protected against noise exposure by low-dose kanamycin (KM) treatment, while B6 mice are not. Genetic differences that distinguish these two strains may include genes that help establish the early "sensit

Apparently changing patterns of inheritance in Alport's hereditary nephritis: genetic heterogeneity versus altered diagnostic criteria.

With the use of more stringent diagnostic criteria, it has recently been shown that some large pedigrees of Alport's and non-Alport's hereditary nephritis fit sex-linked dominant inheritance (O'Neill et al. 1978). We have used similar diagnostic criteria and have studied a number of Michigan pedigrees in order to see if this hypothesis would be confirmed. We found one small pedigree which definitely shows male-to-male transmission, while one large pedigree is tentatively compatible with sex-linked dominant inheritance. Many of the other pedigrees suggested male-to-male transmission. This Michi

Inheritance patterns, cross-resistance and synergism in Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) resistant to emamectin benzoate.

BACKGROUND: Fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith), is a relevant global pest due to severe damage caused on agricultural crops and its capacity to evolve resistance to insecticides. Here, we selected a strain of S. frugiperda resistant to emamectin benzoate under laboratory conditions to understand the inheritance patterns, cross-resistance and synergism involved in the resistance. RESULTS: The emamectin benzoate-resistant (Ben-R) strain was isolated by using F2 screen in a field population collected in Lucas do Rio Verde, Mato Grasso state, Brazil. After ten generations of selec

Study of patterns of inheritance of premature ovarian failure syndrome carrying maternal and paternal premutations.

BACKGROUND: Premature ovarian failure / primary ovarian insufficiency (POF/POI) associated with the mutations of the FMR1 (Fragile-X Mental Retardation 1) gene belongs to the group of the so-called trinucleotide expansion diseases. Our aim was to analyse the relationship between the paternally inherited premutation (PIP) and the maternally inherited premutation (MIP) by the examination of the family members of women with POF, carrying the premutation allele confirmed by molecular genetic testing. METHODS: Molecular genetic testing was performed in the patients of the 1st Department of Obstetr

Familial Paget's disease of bone: patterns of inheritance and frequency of linkage to chromosome 18q.

Paget's disease of bone is a common disorder characterized by focal abnormalities of bone turnover which are associated with bone pain bone deformity and an increased risk of pathological fracture. Genetic factors play an important role in the pathogenesis of Paget's disease, and recent genetic linkage studies have shown that in some families the disease is linked to a candidate locus on chromosome 18q21-22, which also harbors the gene for the related inherited condition, familial expansile osteolysis. In this study we characterized the patterns of inheritance in a series of 269 individuals fr

Familial early puberty: presentation and inheritance pattern in 139 families.

BACKGROUND: The mechanism that initiates the onset of puberty is largely unknown but the age of onset is mainly under genetic control and influenced by environmental factors including nutrition. The coexistence in the same family of central precocious puberty and advanced puberty, both representing early puberty, suggests that they may represent a clinical spectrum of the same trait due to early activation of the GnRH pulse generator. We therefore evaluated the mode of inheritance of early puberty in a large series of familial cases. METHODS: A retrospective, single center study was carried o

Frontonasal dysplasia: a family presenting autosomal dominant inheritance pattern.

Frontonasal dysplasia (FND, also called frontonasal dysostosis or median cleft face syndrome) includes a spectrum of abnormalities affecting the eyes, forehead and nose, and resulting from midfacial dysraphia. The clinical picture is highly variable, but major findings in FND include ocular hypertelorism, a broad nasal root, median cleft affecting nose or both the nose and upper lip, and widow's peak. It is usually a sporadic disorder, although a few familial cases have been reported. We report here a three-generation family with multiple affected members with frontonasal dysplasia. This obser

Dominance and inheritance patterns of mobility and death feigning in beetle strains selected for moving activity.

Reciprocal crossing of different strains is a suitable method to investigate the dominance and inheritance of a focal trait. Herein, we performed reciprocal crossing among strains of Tribolium castaneum exhibiting a genetically high (H strain) and low (L strain) moving activity and investigated the related heritable factors in the F1 and F2 generations. We also evaluated death-feigning behavior, which negatively responded to artificial selection for moving activity in T. castaneum. The results obtained for the F1 generation suggest that low moving activity and short duration of death feigning

The inheritance of vertebral shape in the mouse. I. A study using Fourier analysis to examine patterns of inheritance in the morphology of cervical and upper thoracic vertebrae.

The shapes of cervical and upper thoracic vertebrae from large samples of 2 inbred strains of mice and their F1 offspring were examined using Fourier analysis to investigate in detail the distributions and magnitudes of differences in vertebral shape between different strains of mice, the relationships between parents and offspring and any differences in the inheritance of vertebral shape between successive vertebral levels. Consistent with the findings of an earlier study there was evidence for considerable differences between vertebral levels in the degree to which offspring resemble one or

The paradox of autoimmunity and autoinflammation in inherited neutrophil disorders - in search of common patterns.

Congenital defects of neutrophil number or function are associated with a severe infectious phenotype that may require intensive medical attention and interventions to be controlled. While the infectious complications in inherited neutrophil disorders are easily understood much less clear and explained are autoimmune and autoinflammatory phenomena. We survey the clinical burden of autoimmunity/autoinflammation in this setting, search for common patterns, discuss potential mechanisms and emerging treatments.

Unusual pattern of inheritance and orodental changes in the Ellis-van Creveld syndrome.

Ellis-van Creveld (EVC) syndrome (chondroectodermal dysplasia, mesoectodermal dysplasia, OMIM 225500) is an autosomal recessive skeletal dysplasia characterized by short limbs, short ribs, postaxial polydactyly and dysplastic nails and teeth. Oral manifestations tend to be pathognomonic such as multiple broad labial frenula and congenital missing teeth. In this study we report three Egyptian families with six cases of EVC syndrome. An unusual pattern of inheritance with father to son or to daughter transmission was observed in 2 consanguineous families thus demonstrating pseudo-dominant inheri
