An annotated checklist of parasitic lice (Insecta: Phthiraptera) from the Galápagos Islands.

We list all described species and subspecies of parasitic lice from the Galápagos Islands, based on literature and specimen records. A total of eight families, 47 genera, and 104 species and subspecies of parasitic lice are listed, of which 26 are new species records and eight are new genus records. Also, we report 17 new host-louse associations. The checklist includes 17 endemic species (16 from birds, one from a mammal), 79 native species and subspecies (78 from birds, one from a mammal), and eight species and subspecies (five from birds, three from mammals) introduced by human agency. Nine

Development of the mouthparts in embryos of Haplothrips verbasci (Osborn) (Insecta, Thysanoptera, Phlaeothripidae).

The asymmetric "punch and suck" mouthparts of larval Haplothrips verbasci develop from paired appendages in the late, post-anatrepsis embryo similar to those of other insects. Later, the labrum flexes ventrally over the stomodaeum, the right mandibular appendage degenerates, the maxillary appendages divide into inner (lacinial) and outer (stipital) lobes, and the hypopharynx arises from the venters of the mandibular and maxillary segments. All cephalic segments consolidate anteriorly prior to katatrepsis, their appendages flex ventrally, and the labial appendages fuse medially to form the labi

Comparative Mitogenomics Reveals Gene Rearrangement and Phylogenetic Relationships in Siphlonuroidea (Insecta: Ephemeroptera).

Siphlonuroidea is a superfamily within Ephemeroptera, yet the phylogenetic relationships among its constituent families and their placement relative to other mayfly lineages remain unresolved. To address these questions, we generated and analyzed 16 newly assembled mitochondrial genomes from 14 species across Ephemeroptera, including three species of Ameletidae, four of Siphlonuridae, and nine mitochondrial genomes from seven species of Isonychiidae. Comparative mitogenomic analysis revealed two distinct tRNA gene rearrangement patterns within Siphlonuridae, including trnI-trnQ-trnM-trnQ-trnM-

Worldwide revision of synanthropic silverfish (Insecta: Zygentoma: Lepismatidae) combining morphological and molecular data.

Synanthropic silverfish are the best-known and most widely distributed insects of the order Zygentoma. However, there is a great gap in the knowledge and confusion about the geographic distribution and the diagnostic characteristics that allow their identification. In this work, we provide an exhaustive and deep analysis of the most common 9 synanthropic silverfish of the world, combining previously published and newly derived morphological and molecular data. Updated descriptions of Ctenolepisma calvum (Ritter, 1910) and Ctenolepisma (Sceletolepisma) villosum (Fabricius, 1775) are included, a

Phthiraptera (Arthropoda, Insecta) in Gallus gallus from isolated and mixed backyard rearing systems.

The objectives were to identify the species of chewing lice (Mallophaga) at different body sites in chickens (Gallus gallus), in isolated and mixed rearing systems, and to determine the dynamics and structure of the louse populations collected. The prevalences were 100 and 35% for chickens in the isolated and mixed systems, respectively. The species recorded were: Menopon gallinae, Menacanthus stramineus, Goniodes gigas, Goniocotes gallinae and Lipeurus caponis. The chickens in the isolated system presented more lice than did the ones in the mixed system. The most prevalent species were M. gal

Intraspecific transfer of cantharidin within selected members of the family Meloidae (Insecta: Coleoptera).

The use of deuterium-labelled cantharidin (CAN-D(2)) to study details of cantharidin transfer in blister beetles indicates that the dynamics of organ-selective cantharidin accumulation may differ over time. Although the accessory glands absorb a high amount of CAN-D(2) in the short term, they ultimately accumulate less than the testes. Confirming previous studies, the last steps in the pathway of biosynthesis of cantharidin occur in the male's body distantly from the reproductive system but the ultimate product, cantharidin, is transported into the male reproductive tract via the membrane of t

Review on the thorax musculature in Odonata (Insecta), including the 3D-anatomy of adult Epiophlebiasuperstes.

Odonata comprises Anisoptera (dragonflies), Zygoptera (damselflies), and Epiophlebia, with Anisoptera and Epiophlebia forming the clade Epiprocta. Anisoptera exhibits robust bodies, dissimilar wing pairs, and eyes that may touch, while Zygoptera has slender bodies, uniform wings, and separated eyes; Epiophlebia, however, combines features of both, reflecting likely an ancestral condition. Detailed studies of odonatan thoracic musculature reveal differences between life stages and taxa, highlighting adaptations to larval aquatic and adult aerial lifestyles. This study revisited the thorax anato

First record of the adult of Cymbalcloeon confirming its position in Baetidae (Insecta, Ephemeroptera).

BACKGROUND: The nymphs of Cymbalcloeon sartorii Suttinun et al., 2020 present several unusual characters such as having only three pairs of ventral gills. The imaginal stage of this recently described genus remains unknown. NEW INFORMATION: In Spring 2025, tens of nymphs as well as morphologically and molecularly associated adults of this species were collected in southwestern China. This represents the first recorded occurrence of the genus in China, and indeed, the first report outside Thailand. The male imagos have tiny bodies, clear median longitudinal ridge on mesonotum, one pair of wing

miRNAs of Aedes aegypti (Linnaeus 1762) conserved in six orders of the class Insecta.

Aedes aegypti L. is the most important vector of arboviruses such as dengue, Zika, chikungunya, Mayaro, and yellow fever, which impact millions of people's health per year. MicroRNA profile has been described in some mosquito species as being important for biological processes such as digestion of blood, oviposition, sexual differentiation, insecticide resistance, and pathogens dissemination. We identified the miRNAs of Ae. aegypti females, males and eggs of a reference insecticide susceptible strain New Orleans and compared them with those other insects to determine miRNA fingerprint by new-g

[The plague in Vietnam: history and inventory of collected fleas (insecta, Siphonaptera) in the inhabited zones].

Ten flea species are reported in anthropic zones of Vietnam. Xenopsylla vexabilis is also here included because of it has been involved in others plague's countries. Lentistivalius klossi is the only selvatic flea known as parasite of synanthropic rats. L. klossi bispiniformis (Li and Wang, 1958), first describe from Chinese specimens, is here synonymized (syn. nov.) with the nominal subspecies.

Structure and diversity of abdominal exocrine glands in larvae of Leiodidae (Insecta: Coleoptera: Staphylinoidea).

Epidermal glands are well-known in adult beetles, but their presence and function are less studied in larvae. This study reveals, for the first time for the family Leiodidae, the morphology and ultrastructure of epidermal, paired glands of abdominal segments present in larvae. They are documented in all larval stages of the scavenger beetle Sciodrepoides watsoni watsoni (using a multimodal microscopic approach: light and scanning electron, and transmission electron microscopy). Overview of these structures is also documented for other representatives of Leiodidae and Agyrtidae, basal lineages

Superhydrophobicity and size reduction enabled Halobates (Insecta: Heteroptera, Gerridae) to colonize the open ocean.

Despite the remarkable evolutionary success of insects at colonizing every conceivable terrestrial and aquatic habitat, only five Halobates (Heteroptera: Gerridae) species (~0.0001% of all known insect species) have succeeded at colonizing the open ocean - the largest biome on Earth. This remarkable evolutionary achievement likely required unique adaptations for them to survive and thrive in the challenging oceanic environment. For the first time, we explore the morphology and behavior of an open-ocean Halobates germanus and a related coastal species H. hayanus to understand mechanisms of thes

Fleas (Insecta: Siphonaptera) with public health relevance in domestic pigs (Artiodactyla: Suidae) from Argentina.

The presence of fleas can have a great negative impact on the productivity and well-being of the animals, and can contribute towards propagation of causative pathogens of important diseases in animals and humans. Fleas and domestic pigs (Sus scrofa Linnaeus, 1758) are a known association. However, knowledge about fleas on pigs in Argentina is scarce. In this country, swine farming has become one of the main components of livestock production. This activity is primarily carried out by smallholder farmers, involving a potential risk to humans of acquiring pathogens. Our study was developed in Bu

An Extraordinary Host-Specific Sex Ratio in an Avian Louse (Phthiraptera: Insecta)--Chemical Distortion?

Distortions of sex ratios and sexual traits from synthetic chemicals have been well documented; however, there is little evidence for such phenomena associated with naturally occurring chemical exposures. We reasoned that chemical secretions of vertebrates could contribute to skewed sex ratios in ectoparasitic insects due to differences in susceptibility among the sexes. For example, among ectoparasitic lice the female is generally the larger sex. Smaller males may be more susceptible to chemical effects. We studied sex ratios of lice on two sympatric species of colonial seabirds. Crested aukl

Morphology of male genitalia, legs, and wing venation reveals the classification of Mesozoic Zoraptera (Insecta).

The current classification of extant Zoraptera is based on the results of molecular phylogeny combined with the morphology of male genitalia and supplemented by the characters on the male abdomen and the number of metatibial spurs. However, fossil representatives of Zoraptera have not yet been classified into the modern system, and most of them remain in the catch-all genus Zorotypus Silvestri, 1913, because the genitalia are either not observable or have not been examined in detail. In this study, for the first time, we describe and critically evaluate the male genitalia and other principal d

THE ORIGIN OF AN ORGAN: PHYLOGENETIC ANALYSIS OF EVOLUTIONARY INNOVATION IN THE DIGESTIVE TRACT OF FLIES (INSECTA: DIPTERA).

The cardia, a prominent digestive tract organ consisting of several specialized cell types, occurs throughout the "higher" or muscoid flies, division Schizophora of order Diptera. Phylogenetic analysis of cellular organization in 65 insect species from 36 families indicates that this organ originated within the order Diptera from ancestrally undifferentiated tissues. "Lower" flies, suborder "Nematocera," display little or no epithelial cell specialization at the corresponding site. Scorpionflies of the outgroup order Mecoptera are similarly unspecialized.
