New type of quantum spin Hall insulators in hydrogenated PbSn thin films.

The realization of a quantum spin Hall (QSH) insulator working at high temperature is of both scientific and technical interest since it supports spin-polarized and dssipationless edge states. Based on first-principle calculations, we predicted that the two-dimensional (2D) binary compound of lead and tin (PbSn) in a buckled honeycomb framework can be tuned into a topological insulator with huge a band gap and structural stability via hydrogenation or growth on special substrates. This heavy-element-based structure is sufficiently ductile to survive the 18 ps molecular dynamics (MD) annealing

Atomistic Origins of Conductance Switching in an ε-Cu0.9V2O5 Neuromorphic Single Crystal Oscillator.

Building artificial neurons and synapses is key to achieving the promise of energy efficiency and acceleration envisioned for brain-inspired information processing. Emulating the spiking behavior of biological neurons in physical materials requires precise programming of conductance nonlinearities. Strong correlated solid-state compounds exhibit pronounced nonlinearities such as metal-insulator transitions arising from dynamic electron-electron and electron-lattice interactions. However, a detailed understanding of atomic rearrangements and their implications for electronic structure remains o

Magnetic Structure and Origin of Insulating Behavior in the Ba2CuOsO6 System, and the Role of A-Site Ionic Size in Its Bandgap Opening: Density Functional Theory Approaches.

The magnetic structure and the origin of band gap opening for Ba2CuOsO6 were investigated by exploring the spin exchange interactions and employing the spin-orbit coupling effect. It revealed that the double-perovskite Ba2CuOsO6, composed of the 3d (Cu2+) and 5d (Os6+) transition metal magnetic ions is magnetic insulator. The magnetic susceptibilities of Ba2CuOsO6 obey the Curie-Weiss law, with an estimated Weiss temperature of -13.3 K, indicating AFM ordering. From the density functional theory approach, it is demonstrated that the spin exchange interaction between Cu ions plays a major role

Antiferromagnetic Chern insulator with large charge gap in heavy transition-metal compounds.

Despite the discovery of multiple intrinsic magnetic topological insulators in recent years the observation of Chern insulators is still restricted to very low temperatures due to the negligible charge gaps. Here, we uncover the potential of heavy transition-metal compounds for realizing a collinear antiferromagnetic Chern insulator (AFCI) with a charge gap as large as 300 meV. Our analysis relies on the Kane-Mele-Kondo model with a ferromagnetic Hund coupling J H between the spins of itinerant electrons and the localized spins of size S. We show that a spin-orbit coupling λ SO ≳ 0.03 t , w

Skull defect increases the tumor treating fields strength without detrimental thermogenic effect: A computational simulating research.

BACKGROUND: Tumor treating fields (TTFields) is an FDA-approved adjuvant therapy for glioblastoma. The distribution of an applied electric field has been shown to be governed by distinct tissue structures and electrical conductivity. Of all the tissues the skull plays a significant role in modifying the distribution of the electric field due to its large impedance. In this study, we studied how remodeling of the skull would affect the therapeutic outcome of TTFields, using a computational approach. METHODS: Head models were created from the head template ICBM152 and five realistic head models

Shared binding sites for the chromosomal architectural protein Su(Hw) mediate physical interactions between Drosophila TAD boundaries.

The head-to-tail pairing of the nhomie and homie boundaries is responsible for the formation of a stem-loop TAD (topologically associated domain) that encompasses the even-skipped (eve) gene and its regulatory elements. TAD boundaries like homie and nhomie have partner preferences and one mechanism thought to be important in linking compatible boundaries is shared binding sites for the same architectural protein. Both eve boundaries have a single binding site for the polydactyl zinc finger protein Su(Hw). Here we have investigated the role of the shared Su(Hw) sites in the long-distance regula

High-current density and high-asymmetry MIIM diode based on oxygen-non-stoichiometry controlled homointerface structure for optical rectenna.

Optical rectennas are expected to be applied as power sources for energy harvesting because they can convert a wide range of electromagnetic waves, from visible light to infrared. The critical element in these systems is a diode, which can respond to the changes in electrical polarity in the optical frequency. By considering trade-off relationship between current density and asymmetry of IV characteristic, we reveal the efficiency limitations of MIM diodes for the optical rectenna and suggest a novel tunnel diode using a double insulator with an oxygen-non-stoichiometry controlled homointerfac

Two-Dimensional M-Chalcogene Family with Tunable Superconducting, Topological, and Magnetic Properties.

An interesting question is whether chalcogen atoms can emulate the role of carbon or boron elements stabilized between two transition metal layers, as observed in MXenes or MBenes. Here, we predict a new family of two-dimensional ternary compounds M4XY2 (where M = Pd, Y, Zr, etc.; X = S, Se, Te; and Y = Cl, Br, I), named M-chalcogene. Through first-principles calculations, we reveal diverse physical properties in these compounds, including superconducting, topological, and magnetic characteristics, where the bilayer transition metals play crucial roles. Moreover, the expected helical edge stat

Relativistic effects in chemistry: more common than you thought.

Relativistic effects can strongly influence the chemical and physical properties of heavy elements and their compounds. This influence has been noted in inorganic chemistry textbooks for a couple of decades. This review provides both traditional and new examples of these effects, including the special properties of gold, lead-acid and mercury batteries, the shapes of gold and thallium clusters, heavy-atom shifts in NMR, topological insulators, and certain specific heats.

Tuning charge density waves and magnetic switching in carbon nanowires encased in boron nitride nanotubes.

The emergence of exotic charge density waves (CDW) alongside ferrimagnetic materials opens exciting new possibilities for quantum switching, particularly in field-tuning CDW electronics. However, these two phenomena often compete and rely heavily on strong electronic correlations. While carbon nanowire arrays have been experimentally shown to exhibit ferromagnetism above 400 K, our research shows that encapsulating a linear carbon chain (LCC) within zigzag boron nitride nanotubes (BNT) induces a short-range CDW state under the competing effect of ferrimagnetism and magnetic frustrations. Identifying Band Inversions in Topological Materials Using Diffusion Monte Carlo.

Topological insulators are characterized by insulating bulk states and robust metallic surface states. Band inversion is a hallmark of topological insulators. At time-reversal invariant points in the Brillouin zone, spin-orbit coupling (SOC) induces a swapping of orbital character at the bulk band edges. Reliably detecting band inversion in solid-state systems with many-body methods would aid in identifying possible candidates for spintronics and quantum computing applications and improve our understanding of the physics behind topologically nontrivial systems. Density functional theory (DFT)

Insulator BEAF32 regulates expression of tissue-specific genes and piRNA source loci in Drosophila ovaries.

BACKGROUND: Insulators are the multifunctional DNA binding proteins that perform architectural functions and regulate gene transcription. Although insulators have a well-established role in genome organization, it is still unclear how insulator proteins affect the control of tissue-specific processes. The Drosophila insulator BEAF32 (Boundary Element-Associated Factor of 32 kD) is a component of chromatin complexes found in open chromatin regions containing promoters of housekeeping genes. BEAF32 knockout impairs oogenesis and female fertility suggesting its specific functions during oogenesis

A Noble-Metal-Free Spintronic System with Proximity-Enhanced Ferromagnetic Topological Surface State of FeSi above Room Temperature.

Strongly spin-orbit coupled states at metal interfaces, topological insulators, and 2D materials enable efficient electric control of spin states, offering great potential for spintronics. However, there are still materials challenges to overcome, including the integration into advanced silicon electronics and the scarce resources of constituent heavy elements of those materials. Through magneto-transport measurements and first-principles calculations, here robust spin-orbit coupling (SOC)-induced properties of a ferromagnetic topological surface state in FeSi and their controllability via hyb

Surface phonons in topological insulator Bi2Te3 investigated by Brillouin light scattering.

High resolution Brillouin spectroscopy was used for the first time to study the dispersion and anisotropy of surface phonons in the single crystal of topological insulator Bi2Te3. Two surface acoustic waves have been observed, which distinguishes this material from other metals or nontransparent materials. The modes were assigned as Rayleigh waves. The obtained results were then simulated by Finite Element Method. The layered structure of the unit cell proposed in simulation reproduced quite well experimental results of the modes dispersion and anisotropy.

Precise control of chromatin loop extrusion enhances sustainable green revolution yield in rice.

Continuous and excessive use of inorganic fertilizers underlies current global crop production; therefore, reducing fertilizer use while increasing crop productivity is critical for ensuring agricultural sustainability and food security. Here we show that the natural variant of RCN2, a rice TERMINAL FLOWER 1/CENTRORADIALIS homolog, enhances photosynthesis, nitrogen assimilation and grain yield by restricting chromatin loop extrusion. RCN2 competitively inhibits the interaction between growth-repressing DELLA proteins and SQUAMOSA PROMOTER BINDING PROTEIN-LIKE transcription factors, breaking th

Sequences required for enhancer blocking activity of scs are located within two nuclease-hypersensitive regions.

The Drosophila 87A7 heat shock locus is bordered, on the proximal and distal sides, by two special chromatin structures, scs and scs'. Each structure is characterized by two sets of nuclease-hypersensitive sites, located within moderately G/C-rich DNA, flanking an A/T-rich nuclease-resistant region. scs and scs' have been shown to insulate a white reporter gene from position effects and to prevent enhancer-promoter interactions. These and other properties suggest scs and scs' might function as chromatin domain boundaries. To identify the DNA sequences which are essential for the insulating act

Upcycling Printed Circuit Board E-Waste to High-Strength, Multifunctional, and Reprocessable Sulfur Composites via Thiocracking.

Printed circuit boards (PCBs) are a major fraction of electronic waste, yet their glass-fiber-reinforced epoxy matrices remain effectively unrecyclable. Herein, we employ thiocracking, a one-pot reaction of elemental sulfur with PCBs, to convert them into functional composites. The process is 99% atom-economic and near-zero-waste, exploiting only PCBs and abundant refinery by-product sulfur as reagents. Mechanistic progression from model bisphenol derivatives to FR-4 laminates and shredded PCBs demonstrated that thiocracking cleaves aryl-O and C-C linkages within the polymeric structure and re

Refractive Index Sensing Based on Fano Resonances of a Bus Metal-Insulator-Metal Waveguide with D-Shaped Resonant Cavity.

A plasmonic waveguide coupling cavity structure is proposed, consisting of a bus metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguide-coupled single/double D-shaped resonant cavity. The transmission properties, magnetic field distribution, and refractive index sensing performance are simulated using the finite element method (FEM). A clear multi-Fano resonance phenomenon is observed in the transmission spectra. The Fano resonances arise from the interaction between the discrete states of the D-shaped resonant cavity and the continuum state of the bus MIM waveguide. The influence of various structural paramet

SML-YOLO: a lightweight insulator defect detection algorithm for transmission lines under harsh weather conditions.

Efficient defect detection of insulators in transmission lines is critical to ensuring the reliability and safety of power systems. However, adverse outdoor conditions such as rain, fog, and low illumination can reduce the contrast between targets and background, resulting in blurred defect details. Meanwhile, insulators often coexist with towers, conductors, and other elements within complex backgrounds, which can lead to inaccurate target segmentation and subsequently cause missed or false detections. This study introduces a lightweight insulator defect detection algorithm, SML-YOLO, designe
