Trends in dental insurance claims in the United States in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic: A 3-year perspective (2019-2022).

OBJECTIVES: We showed in a previous analysis the patterns of disruption for private dental insurance claims in the United States caused by the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic in 2020. The present report examines trends during 2020 and 2021, that is, contrasting perspectives during 2019 with the acute phase of the pandemic in 2020, and 2021. METHODS: Private dental insurance paid claims from a data warehouse were obtained, encompassing a 5% random sample of records between January 2019 and December 2021 for child and adult insureds who filed a claim in 2019, 2020, and 2021. We classified claims into one o

Association between first oral examination characteristics and dental treatment needs in privately insured children: A claims data analysis.

BACKGROUND: Early childhood caries (ECC) remains the most common, preventable infectious disease among children in the United States. Screening is recommended after the eruption of the first tooth, but it is unclear how the age at first dental examination is associated with eventual restorative treatment needs. The authors of this study sought to determine how provider type and age at first dental examination are associated longitudinally with caries experience among children in the United States. METHODS: Deidentified claims data were included for 706,636 privately insured children aged 0 th

Analysis of Dental Prosthetic Treatment in Patients with Cancer Aged 65 Years and Older after Expanded Health Insurance Coverage: A Retrospective Clinical Study.

Background and Objectives: With increases in cancer incidence and the number of cancer survivors, the demand for cancer management is growing. However, studies on dental prosthetic treatment for patients with cancer are rare. We aim to investigate the dental prosthetic treatment in patients with cancer aged ≥65 years after expanded health insurance coverage. Materials and Methods: This retrospective study included patients who were treated with implants and removable dentures at Ulsan University Hospital in South Korea between June 2015 and June 2023. Data on age, sex, cancer location, comorbi

The trend of dental check-up and prevalence of dental complications following the use of bone modifying agents in patients with metastatic breast and prostate cancer: analysis of data from the Korean National Health Insurance Service.

BACKGROUND: Bone-modifying agents (BMA) are key components in the management of cancer patients with bone metastasis. Despite their clinical benefits, the use of BMA is associated with dental adverse events (AEs) including medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ). This study investigated the frequency of dental surveillance before BMA treatment and the prevalence of dental AEs including MRONJ, after BMA treatment in patients with bone metastasis from breast and prostate cancer using data from the national health insurance system. METHODS: Data, including age, cancer diagnosis, admi

Children's Dental Sealant Use and Caries Prevalence Affected by National Health Insurance Policy Change: Evidence from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2007-2015).

We evaluated the effect of the National Health Insurance (NHI) policy including dental sealant on changes in the prevalence of sealant and caries, and examined how NHI affected sealant utilization and untreated caries in children from diverse income groups in South Korea. We used a multivariate logistic regression analysis to explore the effects of three stages of dental sealant policy (pre-policy: 2007-2009, first post-policy: 2010-2012, and second post-policy: 2013-2015) on the prevalence of dental sealant and untreated caries. Participant data (N = 8161, aged 6-14 years) were derived from t

Age-Specific Changes in Chewing Discomfort During the Expansion of National Health Insurance Coverage for Dental Implants: A Controlled Interrupted Time Series Analysis in South Korea, 2010-2024.

BACKGROUND: Chewing discomfort related to tooth loss is a common functional problem among older adults, and high out-of-pocket costs for prosthodontic rehabilitation may limit access to treatment. OBJECTIVES: To assess whether age-specific trends in self-reported chewing discomfort changed around South Korea's stepwise expansion of National Health Insurance coverage for dental implants relative to a younger comparison group. METHODS: This study used nationally representative repeated cross-sectional data from the Korea Community Health Survey (2010-2024). A controlled interrupted time series

Discontinuation of dental care and systemic diseases of persons in need of long-term home care - an observational study from the InSEMaP project with German health insurance claims data.

INTRODUCTION: Impaired oral health poses a risk factor for several systemic diseases. The aim of this study was to investigate associations between the discontinuation of regular dental care use and several systemic diseases among persons with an incident long-term home care need. METHODS: Using German health and long-term care insurance data from the DAK-Gesundheit of persons aged ≥ 60 years, we partitioned the observational period into a baseline (2015-2016), an exposure (2017-2018), and a follow-up period (2019-2020). We selected persons who regularly visited the dentist in 2015-2016 with

Effects of the National Health Service Corps expansion on dental care use in underserved areas.

BACKGROUND: The National Health Service Corps (NHSC) expanded substantially from 2009 through 2010 to increase dental workforce supply in dental Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSAs). However, to the authors' knowledge, no past studies have empirically examined the expansion's impact on dental care use. METHODS: The authors used a quasi-experimental difference-in-differences design to compare dental care use among adults residing in counties always designated as whole-county HPSAs (ie, shortage counties) with counties never receiving HPSA designation (ie, nonshortage counties) from 2006

Oral health payment systems around the world: structures, challenges, and trends, a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of dental and oral diseases is increasing globally, yet the utilization of dental services has not shown a corresponding rise. Cost remains a major barrier, as dental care ranks among the four most expensive health services globally. These costs are shaped by each country's health payment system, which plays a critical role in determining access to healthcare. This scoping review aims to map the existing evidence on oral health payment systems and examine how these systems influence access, utilization, equity, and financial protection in different settings. METHODS
