Coverage Denied: Health Insurance Barriers to Gender-Affirming Care.

People who identify as transgender and non-binary (TNB) often experience higher rates of poverty, violence, suicide, unemployment, homelessness, discrimination, psychological distress, substance abuse, and HIV infection than people who do not identify as TNB, partly because of barriers to gender-affirming health care and supports. The current study builds on gender-affirming healthcare research by exploring health insurance-related barriers for TNB-identifying people. The study explored participants' health insurance barriers and how these barriers impeded gender-affirming care. Participants i

Extreme Temperatures, Hospital Utilization and Public Health Insurance Spending.

OBJECTIVES: This study examines the impact of extreme temperatures on hospital utilization and public health insurance program spending in a country with no universal health coverage. METHODS: Using nationwide U.S. county-level panel data and a fixed effects model, we estimate the impact of annual variations in the number of hot and cold days on hospital utilization and medical reimbursements for low-income and elderly beneficiaries of public health insurance. RESULTS: Our results show that extreme heat and mild cold increase medical reimbursements to low-income beneficiaries, while extreme

Strategies for expanding health insurance coverage in vulnerable populations.

BACKGROUND: Health insurance has the potential to improve access to health care and protect people from the financial risks of diseases. However, health insurance coverage is often low, particularly for people most in need of protection, including children and other vulnerable populations. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effectiveness of strategies for expanding health insurance coverage in vulnerable populations. SEARCH METHODS: We searched Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), part of The Cochrane Library. www.thecochranelibrary.com (searched 2 November 2012), PubMed (searche

Childhood psoriasis--an analysis of German health insurance data.

This study explored the epidemiology, treatment, and comorbidities of juvenile psoriasis in Germany using health insurance data. Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that affects approximately 2% to 3% of the world's population. Data were obtained from a database of approximately 6.7 million individuals registered with health insurance organizations throughout Germany. The analysis considered all individuals age 18 years and younger with psoriasis who were registered in 2007. Comorbidities were identified using software based on a morbidity-based risk adjustment model. A total of

Accident settlement for avian influenza in travel health insurance.

Among those infectious diseases that lead to insurance settlement for damages, we normally list those cases that do not involve person-to-person transmission, but rather those cases wherein the harmful agent enters the body without the intention of the person harmed, and which causes acute infectious disease or food poisoning. This is the way in which, for example, tick-borne encephalitis following an insect bite, rabies caused by animal bites, and acute food poisoning contracted in restaurants or from public catering arise. We can also list among the latter those cases of avian influenza illn

Obstetrical health care inequities in a universally insured health care system.

BACKGROUND: Racial and ethnic disparities in health care exist and are rooted in long-standing systemic inequities. These disparities result in significant excess health care expenditures and are due to complex interactions between patients, health care providers and systems, and social and environmental factors. In perinatal care, these inequities also exist, with Black patients being 3 to 4 times more likely to die of childbirth compared with White patients. Similar health care inequities may also exist in the Military Health System despite universal health care coverage, stable employment,

[Health effects of volcanic air pollution--an analysis of the national health insurance].

Using the national health insurance bills covering the one-year period from January through December 1987, the morbidity figures for respiratory diseases, conjunctivitis and dermatitis were compared among four local districts; Ushine, Kaikata, Kunugibaru and Shinjo, in the city of Tarumizu. The former two districts are 10 km south-east of Mt. Sakurajima supposedly experience higher volcanic ash exposure compared to the latter two located 10 to 15 km from this volcano. Results obtained are as follows; 1) Age-adjusted rates of patients' consultations and existing patients were apparently higher

Epidemiological disease burden and annual, nationwide health insurance treatment cost of female infertility based on real-world health insurance claims data in Hungary.

BACKGROUND: Infertility affects more than 50 million couples worldwide, resulting in a significant burden on individuals and society. Its prevalence ranges from 8-12% among developed countries. The growing number of patients poses an increasing challenge to the healthcare system and its funding. Our quantitative, descriptive, and cross-sectional study aimed to analyze the prevalence and annual nationwide health insurance treatment cost of female infertility in Hungary in 2019. METHODS: We used claims data obtained from the Hungarian National Health Insurance Fund Administration (NHFIA). The n

Her health insurance changed its drug formulary after the New Year began. In response to the request of her health insurance, her existing insulin treatment was non-medically switched to a new rapid-acting insulin and a long-acting insulin. She was confus

Examining the Link Between Noncontributory Health Insurance and Crime.

BACKGROUND: New literature has emerged examining the relationship between government-funded healthcare or health insurance for low-income people and crime rates. Studies for developing countries have, however, not yet been conducted in this area. To fill this gap, we studied Türkiye's noncontributory health insurance scheme (Green Card) that provides a full range of health cover to people whose per capita household income is less than one-third of the minimum wage and contemporaneous crime rates. AIMS: To examine the relationship between government-funded health insurance for low-income peopl

CONTEXT: Although unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are considerable problems in the United States, private health insurance plans are inconsistent in their coverage of reproductive and sexual health services needed to address these problems. METHODS: A survey administered to a market-representative sample of 12 health insurance carriers in Washington State assessed benefit coverage for gynecologic services, maternity services, contraceptive services, pregnancy termination, infertility services, reproductive cancer screening, STD services, HIV and AIDS services, an

National health insurance and the new health occupations: nurse practitioners and physicians' assistants.

This article considers a number of issues which might arise in formulating policy for new health occupations. Its particular focus is on nurse practitioners and physicians' assistants and their treatment under potential national health insurance arrangements. The development and expansion of these occupations are described, as is the evidence on their performance with respect to the quality of medical care provided, the impact on the cost of such care, and changes in access to care. We then discuss several issues which might arise in the context of national health insurance legislation, includ

[The health insurers' perspective on defining and managing healthcare needs].

The German healthcare system, despite its high performance, fails to achieve the goal of needs-based service provision. Supply-induced demand, regional disparities and misaligned financial incentives lead to overuse, underuse and misuse of healthcare services. Planning instruments are often based on data reflecting actual utilization rather than capturing the true healthcare needs of the population. The aim of this article is to analyze how needs orientation can be systematically achieved through new planning, financing and organizational frameworks. Drawing on current legislation, empirical d
