Phenotypic associations between young horse assessments and orthopaedic diagnoses in insured Swedish Warmblood horses.

BACKGROUND: Lameness is the most common health problem in riding horses, and insurance data have previously been used to investigate the prevalence of orthopaedic diagnoses in Swedish Warmblood (SWB) horses. Young horse performance testing is an important part of the SWB breeding programme and contributes data to the genetic evaluation. Assessed traits from these tests have been shown to be useful indicator traits of performance in show jumping and dressage, but their associations with orthopaedic health have not previously been investigated. OBJECTIVES: To study the associations between asse

Disparities in Care: The Role of Race on the Utilization of Physical Restraints in the Emergency Setting.

OBJECTIVE: Race-based bias in health care occurs at organizational, structural, and clinical levels and impacts emergency medical care. Limited literature exists on the role of race on patient restraint in the emergency setting. This study sought to examine the role of race in physical restraint in an emergency department (ED) at a major academic medical center. METHODS: Retrospective chart analysis was performed, querying all adult ED visits over a 2-year period (2016-2018) at Massachusetts General Hospital. The associations between race and restraint and selected covariates (sex, insurance,

Risk of non-typhoidal Salmonella infection in patients with cholecystectomy: Results from a nationwide matched cohort study in Taiwan.

BACKGROUND: The current study was designed to investigate the association between cholecystectomy and the risk of non-typhoidal Salmonella (NTS) infection. METHODS: We obtained claims-based data from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD) to perform a nationwide cohort study. A propensity score (PS)-matching analysis was performed with a ratio of 1:2 in the cholecystectomy cohort and cholecystectomy-free group to reduce selection bias. Both groups were followed until NTS diagnosis, a dropout from the insurance programme or the end of 2013. Cox proportional hazard regre

Chronic Non-cancer Pain and Associated Risks of Incident Mild Cognitive Impairment and Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias in Middle-Aged and Older Adults.

The goal of this study is to investigate the association between chronic non-cancer pain (CNCP) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI)/Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRDs) development among adults aged ≥50 using administrative claims data from a national commercial health insurance company during 2007-2017. To reduce selection bias, propensity-score matching was applied to select comparable CNCP and non-CNCP patients. Time-dependent Cox proportional-hazards regressions were conducted to estimate the hazard ratios (HRs) of incident MCI/ADRDs. Of 170,900 patients with/without CNCP, 0.6

Comparison of dementia risk between end stage renal disease patients with hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis--a population based study.

A higher risk of dementia was reported in patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis (HD) compared to those undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD). Selection bias and competing risk of death were not considered in previous studies. The aim of this study was to investigate dementia risk in patients undergoing HD and PD by using the Taiwan Longitudinal Health Insurance Database. We enrolled 52,332 incident HD patients and 3292 incident PD patients who were older than 40 years between January 1, 1998 and December 31, 2007. During the study period, 3775 patients were diagnosed with dementia in the

Reconstructing a Pregnancy Cohort to Examine Potential Selection Bias in Studies on Racial Disparities in Preterm Delivery.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiologic studies examining preconception risk factors on perinatal outcomes are typically restricted to livebirths. By including only non-terminated pregnancies, estimates for the underlying pregnancy cohort may be subject to selection bias. We examined if potential selection bias due to induced termination by maternal race may result in different estimates of the non-Hispanic black - non-Hispanic white risk ratio (RR) for preterm delivery (PTD) among a reconstructed pregnancy cohort ('pseudo-pregnancy cohort'). METHODS: Using New York City registries of 1.6 million livebirth

Variation in surgical management of neurogenic bowel among centers participating in National Spina Bifida Patient Registry.

PURPOSE: Optimal management of neurogenic bowel in patients with spina bifida (SB) remains controversial. Surgical interventions may be utilized to treat constipation and provide fecal continence, but their use may vary among SB treatment centers. METHODS: We queried the National Spina Bifida Patient Registry (NSBPR) to identify patients who underwent surgical interventions for neurogenic bowel. We abstracted demographic characteristics, SB type, functional level, concurrent bladder surgery, mobility, and NSBPR clinics to determine whether any of these factors were associated with interventio

Outcome adaptive propensity score methods for handling censoring and high-dimensionality: Application to insurance claims.

Propensity scores are commonly used to reduce the confounding bias in non-randomized observational studies for estimating the average treatment effect. An important assumption underlying this approach is that all confounders that are associated with both the treatment and the outcome of interest are measured and included in the propensity score model. In the absence of strong prior knowledge about potential confounders, researchers may agnostically want to adjust for a high-dimensional set of pre-treatment variables. As such, variable selection procedure is needed for propensity score estimati
