PURPOSE: We investigated the expression of laminin-5 and integrins, and the ultrastructure of the interface between basal cells and the basement membrane in the keratoconus cornea. These findings were compared to those in normal central cornea and limbus.

OBJECTIVES: The palisading cells of rheumatoid nodules share certain features with synovial intimal cells. The similarities between the two cell populations have been reassessed using new cytochemical markers.

PURPOSE: Keratoconus is a gradually progressing disease of unknown cause, characterized by central thinning, increased curvature, and finally scarring of the cornea. This causes myopia and astigmatism and the ultimate treatment is keratoplasty. We studied the composition of basement membranes (BMs) in normal, scarred and keratoconus corneas to find out possible changes specific for keratoconus.

A confluent endothelial monolayer can be induced to form vascular tubes in response to collagen. We investigated possible mechanisms of collagen-induced tube formation by using antibodies to the VLA-2 integrin receptor and protein kinase C inhibitors. Renal cyst formation is the hallmark of autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). Immunohistological expression of integrins has been analyzed on 45 neuroblastoma specimens representative of the different clinical and histological forms of the tumor.
