Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is a congenital disease which is caused by mutations in the NF1 gene on chromosome 17, resulting in an altered function of the neurofibromin protein. Owing to the ubiquitous expression of this protein, this syndrome is associated with pathology in many organ systems of the body, especially the central and peripheral nervous, musculoskeletal, and integumentary systems. This review outlines the common sequelae related to a diagnosis of NF1 and the common treatment approach to each.

In many cases, strong friction reduction is critical for success of both living organisms and engineering systems. Some arthropods exhibit good antifriction abilities in their specific living environments and have inspired many innovations for solving industry challenges. However, the current literature mainly focused on terrestrial insects, such as beetles, grasshoppers and katydids. The antifriction mechanisms in amphibious arthropods are still unknown, even if their surfaces are optimized for both air and water environments. Herein the tribological properties of the cuticle surface of the s

Oculocutaneous syndromes are often due to mutations in single genes. In some cases, mouse models for these diseases exist in spontaneously occurring mutations, or in mice resulting from forward mutatagenesis screens. Here we present novel genes that may be causative for oculocutaneous disease in humans, discovered as part of a genome-wide screen of knockout-mice in a targeted single-gene deletion project. The International Mouse Phenotyping Consortium (IMPC) database (data release 10.0) was interrogated for all mouse strains with integument abnormalities, which were then cross-referenced indiv

The tegument ultrastructure of the intestinal fluke Aphallus tubarium was studied for the first time with the use of scanning and transmission electron microscopy. New details on morphology were recorded. The ultrastructural study revealed that the tegument of A. tubarium had a syncytial organization with a distal cytoplasm lying over a basal matrix and cytons. The surface of the tegument is covered with pectinate spines arranged quincuncially. As anterior-posterior differences were observed, particular attention was given to spines. Spines decrease in size and density from the anterior part o

Atopic dermatitis is acknowledged as a vital inflammatory disorder associated with the integumentary system of the body and is characterized by the formation of thick reddish-grey scars and erythema formation on skin, prevalent amidst the populace. Numerous synthetic drugs are available for treatment like antihistamines, immunosuppressants, glucocorticoids etc., but contrarily, essential oil therapy is exclusively lime lighted to favour the purpose. The utilization of available engineered drugs, possess the marked adverse effects owing to prolonged duration of therapy and therefore, essential

Spinal cord injury (SCI) results in motor paralysis and sensory loss that places individuals at particularly high risk of pressure injuries. Multiple comorbidities associated with autonomic, cardiovascular, pulmonary, endocrine, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, neurological, and musculoskeletal dysfunction makes it even more likely that pressure injuries will occur. This manuscript will review the structure and function of the integumentary system, and address the multidisciplinary approach required to prevent and manage pressure injuries in this vulnerable population.

The gray short-tailed opossum, Monodelphis domestica, is a newly established laboratory animal that is becoming increasingly important to biomedical research. Because little disease information is available for this species, we reviewed records for spontaneous gross and histologic lesions and microbiologic results in 150 M. domestica necropsies during an 11-year period. We identified 150 (91 female, 59 male) animals from 441 necropsy cases which were controls in experimental protocols or were members of the breeding colony. Initial statistical examinations indicated that the sample was represe

Zinc is a trace element essential to the gastrointestinal, immune, integumentary, reproductive, and central nervous systems. Zinc deficiency is prevalent in many areas of the world and is a diagnostically challenging condition. Cutaneous manifestations typically occur in moderate to severe zinc deficiency and present as alopecia and dermatitis in the perioral, acral, and perineal regions. Zinc deficiency is a potentially fatal disease process. The aim of this review is to focus on the cutaneous manifestations, diagnosis, and treatment of zinc deficiency in children, and to propose an etiologic

Crocodyliforms were one of the most successful groups of Mesozoic tetrapods, radiating into terrestrial, semiaquatic and marine environments, while occupying numerous trophic niches, including carnivorous, insectivorous, herbivorous, and piscivorous species. Among these taxa were the enigmatic, poorly represented flat-headed crocodyliforms from the late Cretaceous of northern Africa. Here we report a new, giant crocodyliform from the early Late Cretaceous (Cenomanian) Kem Kem Formation of Morocco. Represented by a partial braincase, the taxon has an extremely long, flat skull with large jaw an

Neurocutaneous melanosis (NCM) is a rare neuroectodermal dysplasia that includes both central nervous system (CNS) and integumentary melanocytic abnormalities. NCM can present with varied clinical and imaging findings, classically presenting with large melanocytic nevi involving the posterior axial trunk region. We describe a case with predominant small non-scalp and non posterior axial-trunk nevi, which nevertheless demonstrated typical CNS imaging findings. Our case clinically presented with epilepsy that was controlled by medical treatment. The patient also demonstrated motor developmental

AbstractRecent advances in biomedical research have facilitated the exploration of biomimetic materials and their potential for diagnosing and treating diseases. This review synthesizes reports of recent research into biomimetic materials and provides a focused analysis of their therapeutic and diagnostic efficacy across multiple physiological systems, including the locomotor, digestive, respiratory, urinary, endocrine, nervous, integumentary, hematopoietic, and circulatory systems. These findings highlight the transformative potential of these materials in the management of systemic diseases.

Fish surgical procedures are commonplace in aquaria, zoos, laboratory facilities, and pet clinical practice. To incorporate fish surgery into a clinical setting, an understanding of anatomic differences between mammals and fish, bath anesthetics, and recirculating anesthesia techniques must be developed; a system or different size systems to accommodate anesthesia and surgery of particular species of concern at an institution or practice constructed; and familiar mammalian surgical principles applied with some adaptations. Common surgical procedures in fish include coeliotomy for intracoelomic

Systemic scleroderma (systemic sclerosis) is a rare, autoimmune, collagen-vascular disease of unknown etiology that affects the connective tissues of the skin, internal organs, as well as the small blood vessels. There are 3 subclasses of systemic scleroderma: limited cutaneous, diffuse cutaneous, and sine scleroderma. Prognosis depends on the extent of organ involvement. Complications of systemic scleroderma can involve the cardiovascular, pulmonary, gastrointestinal, renal, integumentary, and the skeletal-muscular systems. Because systemic scleroderma is not common, many orthopaedic nurses m

Triclabendazole (TCBZ), the anthelmintic drug active against both mature and immature liver flukes, was used to investigate the effect of in vivo treatment on the tegumental surface of juvenile Fasciola gigantica. Five goats were infected with 150 F. gigantica metacercariae each by oral gavage. Four of them were treated with single dose of TCBZ at 10mg/kg at four weeks post-infection. They were euthanized at 0 (untreated), 24, 48, 72 and 96h post treatment. Juvenile flukes were manually retrieved from the goat livers and processed for scanning electron microscopy. In control flukes, the anteri

Nicotine is one of the most abused substances worldwide. Just as in adolescence and adulthood, tobacco use is also problematic in the elderly. Older people are more vulnerable to smoking consequences because of the additive effects of smoke. Cardiovascular diseases are the most common health problems associated with smoking; however, other systems are also affected, including the respiratory, nervous, integumentary, and many other systems. Smoking cessation is a difficult task especially in the elderly; therefore, physicians should encourage older patients to quit with every patient-physician

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic systemic inflammatory disease that occurs two to four times as often in women as in men and increases in incidence with advancing age. It affects synovial-lined joints and can also affect the pulmonary, cardiac, nervous, integumentary, and reticuloendothelial systems. RA is manifested clinically by malaise and fatigue, followed by a symmetric pattern of joint inflammation characterized by pain and stiffness. RA most likely occurs in the setting of a genetically predisposed individual, triggered by infectious agents or endogenous antigens. Many of the newe

This article reviews toxic chemicals that cause irritation and damage to single and multiple organ systems (corrosion) in an acute fashion. An irritant toxic chemical causes reversible damage to skin or other organ system, whereas a corrosive agent produces irreversible damage, namely, visible necrosis into integumentary layers, following application of a substance for up to 4 hours. Corrosive reactions can cause coagulation or liquefaction necrosis. Damaged areas are typified by ulcers, bleeding, bloody scabs, and eventual discoloration caused by blanching of the skin, complete areas of alope

Background: Healthy ageing depends on the maintenance of several interconnected biological processes including adequate oxygen-carrying capacity, control of systemic inflammation, and preservation of lean body mass. ProGo® is a salmon protein hydrolysate (SPH) with prior evidence of benefits on iron metabolism, inflammation, and metabolic health. Methods: This randomized, double-blind, active-controlled pilot study examined whether 56 days of daily ProGo® supplementation could enhance key biological drivers of healthy ageing in overweight adults, compared with an iso-nitrogenous whey protein i

Dermatologic disorders, affecting the integumentary system, involve diverse molecular mechanisms such as cell proliferation, apoptosis, inflammation and immune responses. Long noncoding RNAs, particularly Metastasis-Associated Lung Adenocarcinoma Transcript 1 (MALAT1), are crucial regulators of gene expression. MALAT1 influences inflammatory responses, immune cell function and signaling pathways, impacting various physiological and pathological processes, including dermatologic disorders. Dysregulation of MALAT1 is observed in skin conditions like psoriasis, atopic dermatitis and systemic lupu

Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease (VKH) is a multisystem autoimmune disorder principally affecting pigmented tissues in the ocular, auditory, integumentary and central nervous systems. Patients are typically 20 to 50 years old and have no history of either surgical or accidental ocular trauma. Pigmented races are more commonly affected. Depending on revised diagnostic criteria, the disease is classified as complete, incomplete or probable based on the presence of extraocular findings (neurological, auditory and integumentary). The clinical course of VKH is divided into four phases: prodromal (mimic
