[Trauma transmission and identity construction].

Individual, family and collective stories are closely connected. The study of a clinical situation enables the processes of identity construction and transgenerational mandate to be identified, in particular when the family history is marked by a collective trauma such as that of the Holocaust.

The Past in the Exam Room: Intergenerational Memory, Moral Ambiguity, and the Work of Empathy.

This article examines how intergenerational memory shapes clinicians' moral experience and empathic engagement in everyday clinical practice. Drawing on a reflexive account of a routine medical encounter that unexpectedly activated inherited histories of war, displacement, and fear, the essay is situated within anthropological and medical humanities scholarship on clinician subjectivation, postmemory, and moral experience. While existing literature has examined how professional training and institutional norms shape clinicians' subjectivities, less attention has been paid to how pre-profession

Predicting Elder Abuse Using a Random Forest Classifier.

This paper aims to identify key factors influencing elder abuse within the family and to further explore the heterogeneity of these factors across different types of elder abuse. The data were drawn from the China Longitudinal Aging Social Survey and the final valid sample was 10,703. A random forest classifier, a supervised machine learning method, was employed to identify the key influencing factors of elder abuse. Children's economic status is found to be the most important factor in predicting elder abuse, followed by the number of children, the health status of older people, intergenerati

The bottom-up approach in multigenerational family therapy: The child as the family guide.

In therapy, the child is mainly seen as a problem to be labeled or as a victim of various forms of abuse. The idea of the child as a therapeutic resource is the central point of my article where children's symptoms are quickly reframed and get a relational meaning in the family. Once the relational competence of the child is appreciated and his voice is heard, the child becomes a special guide to explore the emotional world of his family, and the genogram can provide a wonderful platform to start this therapeutic journey. Using a multigenerational lens, I describe how to explore family develop

The Emergence of an Elder-Blaming Discourse in Twenty-First Century China.

To people familiar with Confucian teachings about revering elders, it may be surprising that, over the last decade and a half, a discourse has emerged and spread widely in China in which elders are denigrated as out-of-date and corrupt. Using newspaper articles, commentaries and videos, this paper first traces the emergence of intergenerational conflicts over bus seats, along with related phenomena that have become flashpoints in the new elder-blaming discourse. Second, this paper delineates and challenges popular and academic notions that intergenerational differences in values and dispositio

Participation in intergenerational Service-Learning benefits older adults: A brief report.

Most research on intergenerational service-learning has focused on the benefits for college students, with fewer studies examining the benefits to older adults. The present study was designed to assess the impact on older adults of participating in Working Together: Intergenerational Student/Senior Exchange, a brief intergenerational service-learning program that brings together college students and older adults as equal partners to promote intergenerational understanding and communication. Older adults from an assisted living community met up to six times with students enrolled in aging-relat

Evaluation of a Gamification-Based Intervention to Enhance Intergenerational Communication: Pre-Post Mixed Methods Evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Intergenerational communication has been recognized as a key factor in enhancing social connections among older adults by improving the quality of interactions, which is a crucial component of healthy aging. However, effective interventions to foster intergenerational communication and engagement remain scarce at this stage. OBJECTIVE: This study examined the effects of a gamification intervention for intergenerational dialogue on intergenerational communication and health-related capacity across 3 age cohorts and further analyzed the differential impacts of intervention character

Transactions between Maternal and Child Depressive Symptoms Emerge Early in Life.

Maternal depression is a robust risk factor for children's internalizing symptoms; however, the intergenerational transmission of mood disorders is likely more complex than unidirectional parent-directed effects. Theoretical models support transactional associations between maternal and child symptomatology over time but have not been well examined, especially in younger high-risk samples. The present investigation examined predictive transactional relations between maternal depression and children's internalizing in toddlerhood and early childhood using a cross-lagged panel model. Participant

Transgenerational consequences of grandparents' smoking on grandchildren's development: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: Research on the impact of smoking behaviour across generations has primarily focused on grandmaternal smoking during pregnancy. However, the broader multigenerational effects of smoking behaviour, notably through environmental and behavioural pathways, remain underexplored. This study evaluated previous studies on the possibility of transgenerational transmission, rather than in utero transmission, regarding the effects of grandparental smoking behaviour on offspring's development outcomes. DESIGN: This study is a systematic review with qualitative evidence synthesis. DATA SOURCES

The Geography of Intergenerational Income Mobility and Substance Use Among Adolescents in a Large Statewide Survey.

Background: A growing body of research has documented the role of economic shocks on working age adults substance use and deaths of despair. However, little research has investigated how economic opportunity might influence substance use among adolescents. Substance use by adolescents remains a persistent and troubling public health problem in the United States. Approximately 40% of 12th graders reported having used marijuana and 60% of 12th graders reported having used alcohol in their lifetime. Prior research indicates that adolescent substance use and early onset substance use (i.e., middle

Clarifying the relation between mother and adolescent borderline personality disorder symptoms: The roles of maternal and adolescent emotion regulation and maladaptive maternal emotion socialization.

Despite evidence for the intergenerational transmission of borderline personality disorder (BPD) pathology from mothers to offspring, the factors underlying the relation between mother and child BPD symptoms remain unclear and little is known about the pathways through which maternal BPD symptoms may relate to BPD symptoms in their offspring. One set of factors that warrants consideration in this regard is mother and child emotion regulation (ER) difficulties. In particular, theory and research suggest an indirect relation between mother and child BPD symptoms through maternal ER difficulties

Mothers' History of Child Sexual Abuse and Child Behavior Problems: The Mediating Role of Mothers' Helpless State of Mind.

This investigation evaluated a theoretically specified model of associations among mothers' history of child sexual abuse (CSA), a helpless state of mind (SOM) with regard to the mother-child relationship, and increased behavior problems in the next generation. Moreover, we evaluated the moderating influence of child gender on predicted relations between mothers' CSA severity and helpless SOM (i.e., moderated mediation). Participants were 225 biological mother-preschooler dyads (48% female; 46.4% Latinx) drawn from an ongoing, longitudinal study of representation and regulation in child develo

"I Just Wouldn't Like Him to go Through What I Went Through as a Kid": A Qualitative Study on the Mitigating Effects of Positive Childhood Experiences in Mothers with a History of Adverse Childhood Experiences in an Irish Population.

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are increasingly being acknowledged as a major risk factor for instigating and sustaining cycles of trauma between mother and child. Recently, the concept of Benevolent Childhood Experiences (BCEs) has been introduced to ACEs research as a buffer against the transmission of ACEs between generations. Positive childhood experiences such as attachment to caregivers, positive peer relations and positive sense of self have been found to counteract the effects of adverse childhood experiences. The emergence of positive childhood experiences as an adaptive capacit

Memoirs of amnesia: filial narratology of contemporary amnesiac writing in Taiwan.

Contemporary Taiwanese literature has witnessed an emergence of narratives addressing cognitive decline and Alzheimer's disease, constituting a significant literary phenomenon that merits scholarly attention. These narratives often delve into intergenerational dynamics between ageing parents, whose stories are untold, and their adult children, who emerge as literary voices. Through the filial narratives of amnesia, writers reveal the relational nature of memory itself. Through theoretical frameworks of Asian gerontology and narrative medicine, this study examines how Taiwanese dementia narrati

Work values and communication styles among Generation X, Y, and Z nurses: A cross-sectional study.

AIM: To compare and contrast nurses' work values and communication styles across Generation X, Y, and Z. BACKGROUND: Intergenerational differences in the work values of nurses are well known, but the commonalities remain largely uninvestigated. It is also unclear if there are intergenerational differences and commonalities in the rhetorical communication style of nurses. METHODS: This study used a cross-sectional research design. Participants were 243 nurses of Generation X (n = 78), Y (n = 86), and Z (n = 79) working at a general hospital in Korea. Structured questionnaires were used to col

Knowing how to help: Grandmothers' experiences of providing and receiving support following their child's pregnancy loss.

PROBLEM: Pregnancy loss is a distressing experience for parents, however no research has addressed grandmothers' experiences of grief and support following a child's pregnancy loss. BACKGROUND: No research has specifically addressed grandmothers' experiences of support and bereavement care following pregnancy loss. AIM: This study seeks to understand three key areas: (1) the support grandmothers provide to their child; (2) the support they received themselves following pregnancy loss, and; (3) supports desired by grandmothers. The study aims to contribute insights into actions midwives could

Epigenetic transmission of Holocaust trauma: can nightmares be inherited?

The Holocaust left its visible and invisible marks not only on the survivors, but also on their children. Instead of numbers tattooed on their forearms, however, they may have been marked epigenetically with a chemical coating upon their chromosomes, which would represent a kind of biological memory of what the parents experienced. as a result, some suffer from a general vulnerability to stress while others are more resilient. Previous research assumed that such transmission was caused by environmental factors, such as the parents' childrearing behavior. New research, however, indicates that t

From father to son: transgenerational effect of tetracycline on sperm viability.

The broad-spectrum antibiotic tetracycline is used in animal production, antimicrobial therapy, and for curing arthropods infected with bacterial endosymbionts such as Wolbachia. Tetracycline inhibits mitochondrial translation, and recent evidence indicates that male reproductive traits may be particularly sensitive to this antibiotic. Here, we report the first multi-generation investigation of tetracycline's effects on ejaculate traits. In a study of the pseudoscorpion, Cordylochernes scorpioides, in which siblings were randomly assigned to control and tetracycline treatments across replicate

Genes and the intergenerational transmission of BMI and obesity.

This paper compares the strength of intergenerational transmission of body mass index (BMI) and obesity in a sample of adoptees relative to a matched sample of biological children with similar observable characteristics. We find that BMI and obesity are strongly correlated among biological parent-child pairs, but there are no significant intergenerational associations in these health traits among adoptive parent-child pairs. The intergenerational elasticity of BMI for children to their parents is 0.2 in the matched biological sample, but indistinguishable from zero for adopted children with a
