Internal hernias are rare and often difficult to diagnose due to their nonspecific clinical presentation. We describe an unusual case of an internal hernia caused by an abnormal gastrojejunal connection, incidentally identified during a laparoscopic appendectomy. Intraoperative exploration revealed a fibrous band extending from the jejunal wall to the posterior gastric wall, creating a hernia orifice that entrapped the small intestine and its mesentery. The anomalous band was excised in its entirety, and the herniated bowel was repositioned to restore normal anatomy. The patient recovered unev

Appendicitis is a well-known and highly common surgical emergency disease, yet it presents with a wide variety of manifestations. This is a case report of a 47-year-old female who presented with a complaint of having constant crampy right lower abdominal pain for two weeks. The patient reported having a sudden onset of symptoms that went with the typical picture of acute appendicitis that occurred two weeks ago. Our pre-op workup was inconclusive; therefore, we planned to go for a diagnostic laparoscopy, where surprisingly, the appendix was long, inflamed, and attached to the posterior wall of

Meckel's diverticulum (MD) is the most common gastrointestinal congenital anomaly of the small intestine. A small subset of patients with MD develops a mesodiverticular band (MDB), creating a snare-like opening and the potential for internal hernias (IHs). IHs are a known possible cause of small bowel obstructions and are most common in adults post bariatric surgery. Herein, we present an atypical case of pediatric internal hernia caused by an MDB. A six-year-old male child with chronic constipation presented with one week of abdominal pain and one day of non-bloody, non-bilious emesis, decrea

Internal hernias through the foramen of Winslow are very rare. An 80-year-old female patient presented with epigastric and right upper quadrant pain associated with abdominal distention, nausea and vomiting for 1 day. A CT scan showed an internal hernia with terminal ileum and caecum identified within the lesser sac. The diagnosis was confirmed by laparotomy. A right hemicolectomy was performed to prevent further recurrence. We reviewed case reports with the same presentation by searching the Pubmed database using the keywords: 'foramen Winslow hernia, cecum'. We identified 23 publications. Ou

Introduction. Internal hernias are often misdiagnosed because of their rarity, with subsequent significant morbidity. Case Presentation. A 61-year-old Japanese man with no history of surgery was referred for intermittent abdominal pain. CT suggested the presence of a transmesocolic internal hernia. The patient underwent a surgical procedure and was diagnosed with transmesocolic internal hernia. We found internal herniation of the small intestine loop through a defect in the transverse mesocolon, without any strangulation of the small intestine. We were able to complete the operation laparoscop

After abdominal muscle exercises a young man suffered from upper abdominal pains and vomiting. The pain moved to the lower abdomen and the abdominal wall hardened. Clinical picture and laboratory findings were in agreement with acute appendicitis, and the patient was operated. Unexpectedly the small intestine and the ascending colon appeared almost entirely gangrenous upon gridiron incision, and the surgical incision was widened. An extensive internal herniation was revealed, with the small intestine having protruded through the sigmoid mesentery, causing a disturbance of the blood circulation

INTRODUCTION: Hemipelvectomies are uncommon operations, usually performed for primary or metastatic malignant disease and less frequently for benign-aggressive tumours. There are very few reports in literature regarding complications of these procedures and even fewer reports about post hemipelvectomy hernias in particular.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: We present the only reported case of an incisional hernia of the urinary bladder following internal hemipelvectomy for aneurysmal bone cyst of the pubic bone. A careful literature review is also performed.
DISCUSSION: The development of the incisiona

BACKGROUND: Simultaneous pancreas-kidney transplantation has evolved as the best treatment for type 1 diabetic patients at end-stage renal disease. The surgical complication rate is high, which is an important barrier to the success of this procedure. The frequent complications that require relaparotomies include fistulas, graft thromboses, and intra-abdominal abscesses. Intestinal obstructions after pancreas transplantation due to internal herniation are not common.
PURPOSE: The objective of this article was to review the literature about this problem and describe our personal experience in

The authors report the case of a woman operated by transperitoneal laparoscopic left nephrectomy for destroyed kidney. At the third postoperative week, she developed small bowel obstruction requiring reoperation by laparotomy. This complication was due to a transmesocolic internal hernia of the small intestine via a breach created during access to the renal pedicle by the peritoneal incision at the duodenojejunal flexure that was not closed. Four other cases of transmesocolic internal hernia have been reported in the literature following left laparoscopic nephrectomy. An accidental breach of t

Transmesenteric hernia is frequently encountered in practice, and because of the high risk of strangulation, even small internal hernias are dangerous. Knowledge of the characteristic imaging features and the mechanism of internal hernia can lead to early detection and correct diagnosis, both of which can save the patient's life. This article describes common CT findings of internal hernia with emphasis on various postoperative transmesenteric hernias as well as other common internal hernias.

Internal abdominal hernias develop when one or more viscera extrude through an intraperitoneal orifice but remain within the peritoneal cavity. The orific may be normal (Winslow's foramen) or paranormal (peritoneal fossae: paraduodenal, ileocecal, inter- and mesosigmoidal, paracolic, supravesical, of the large ligament of uterus). All these hernias possess a sac and are true hernias. The orifice may also be abnormal: pathologic origin if formed in a mesentery or an omentum (trans-mesenteric, trans-mesocoloic, trans-omental, by colo-omental disinsertion) or in the form of an anomalous orific if

A unique abdominal internal hernia is described. A 30-year-old man suffered intestinal obstruction and strangulation due to incarceration of the transverse colon in the subphrenic space. This phenomenon is contrasted with Chilaiditi's syndrome (hepatodiaphragmatic interposition).

AIM: To review the clinical and multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) features of adhesive internal hernias (IHs) and to ascertain specific MDCT criteria to assist in the diagnosis of adhesive IHs and the early detection of intestinal strangulation.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Medical records and preoperative abdominal MDCT findings of 34 patients with surgically confirmed abdominal adhesive IHs were analysed retrospectively.
RESULTS: The specific MDCT features of adhesive IHs included the following: dislocating and clustering of intestinal segments (100%); stretching and crowding of the mesen

UNLABELLED: Although internal hernias are rare complications of laparoscopic colorectal surgery, they can lead to serious outcomes and are associated with a high mortality of up 20 %.
AIM OF THE STUDY: The aim of this study was to describe our experience regarding internal herniation following laparoscopic colorectal surgery.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: From 2009 to 2015, more than 1,093 laparoscopic colorectal procedures were performed, and 6 patients developed internal herniation. Data were obtained from patients' charts and reviewed retrospectively. Perioperative course and outcomes were analy

Congenital internal hernias (CIAHs) are a rare cause of small bowel obstruction in adults. We present a case of transmesenteric CIAH in a 32-year-old male. The clinical examination and computed tomography scan were interpreted as intestinal obstruction, and only an emergency laparotomy revealed that 1 m of small bowel herniated through a 2 cm defect in the mesentery of the transverse colon. Repair of the defect was performed using interrupted suturing, and the patient was discharged after 4 days without sequelae.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 3,000 bariatric operations are performed in Norway annually. Laparoscopic gastric bypass is the most widely used procedure. Internal hernia is a potentially serious cause of acute abdominal pain after a gastric bypass.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: The review is based on a discretionary selection of articles found in PubMed coupled with the authors' personal clinical experience.
RESULTS: Internal hernias due to protrusion of the bowel through mesenterial defects, or slits, occur in approximately 0-10% of patients after a gastric bypass. The incidence depends on follow-up tim

We herein describe a case with an internal hernia that developed after laparoscopic abdominoperineal resection for rectal cancer. The small intestine passed through the space between the sigmoid colon loop of the stoma and the abdominal wall. Internal hernias associated with colostomy are rare; however, the condition is an important complication, because it causes ischemia in both the herniated intestine and the sigmoid colon pulled through the abdominal wall as a stoma.
