BACKGROUND: The prevalence of intracranial aneurysm (IA) in the population is approximately 3-7%, with a rupture mortality rate as high as 40%. Identification of risk factors for IA occurrence and provision of targeted preventive and therapeutic measures are crucial for clinical diagnosis of IA. Dental caries is a common oral disease that affects the global population. In this study, we aimed to explore the potential connection between dental caries and the incidence of IA.
METHODS: We conducted a single-center retrospective 1:1 matched case-control study to assess the correlation between den

INTRODUCTION: Computed Tomography Angiography (CTA) is being used to identify traumatic intracranial aneurysms (TICA) in patients with findings such as skull fracture and intracranial haemorrhage on initial Computed Tomography (CT) scans after blunt traumatic brain injury (TBI). However, the incidence of TICA in patients with blunt TBI is unknown. The aim of this study is to report the incidence of TICA in patients with blunt TBI and to assess the utility of CTA in detecting these lesions.
METHODS: A 10-year retrospective study (2003-2012) was performed at a Level 1 trauma centre. All patient

This report presents an incidental finding of a potentially life-threatening large fusiform aneurysm of the internal carotid artery at the level of the posterior communicating artery in a patient who reported with complaints relating to the presence of a radiolucent lesion in the mandible that was diagnosed as odontogenic keratocyst. This case highlights the need to study a case in detail in preparation for prescribing the appropriate advanced imaging modality examination, and also to carefully evaluate the entire imaged volume for incidental pathology and not just the region of interest. This

The pathological findings of six autopsy cases of dissecting intracranial aneurysm are studied. Clinically, all cases exhibited systemic hypertension or left ventricular hypertrophy. Macroscopically, all cases exhibited rupture of the vertebral artery and subarachnoid hemorrhage. Two types of lesion were present. First, all cases showed the formation of a dilatated pseudoaneurysm with widespread disruption of the entire arterial wall, which was composed of thin adventitia. Second, a medial disruption of the arterial wall and subadventitial dissecting hemorrhage, which formed a false lumen and

A case of spontaneous thrombosis of a previously ruptured anterior communicating artery aneurysm is reported. The patient was referred by another hospital to our service 4 months after the bleeding episode. He had developed a symptomatic normal pressure hydrocephalus, successfully treated by ventriculoperitoneal shunt. Follow-up angiographies, the first performed 4 months and the second 1 year after the bleeding, did not show the aneurysm. Furthermore, the parent artery was not occluded. The literature relative to the subject is reviewed and the possible mechanisms of spontaneous thrombosis ar

Rupture of an intracranial dissecting aneurysm is a rare but dangerous event. The authors' experience with 14 cases of these lesions on the vertebrobasilar circulation suggests that these aneurysms have typical angiographic silhouettes and that, at least in the vertebral artery, they are treatable by proximal arterial occlusion.

This study presents a unique case of a patient with headaches, which were initially attributed to unruptured intracranial aneurysms (UIAs) but were later found to be associated with cerebral cavernous malformations (CCMs). The authors highlight the importance of MRI in differentiating between UIAs and CCMs, as conventional cerebral angiography cannot reveal the pathological changes of CCMs. This case underscores the necessity of cranial MRI examination, particularly in patients with UIAs presenting with headaches, to minimize the risk of missed diagnoses of CCMs.

Intracranial aneurysms, a major cause of subarachnoid hemorrhage(SAH), pose a significant social burden due to their poor patient outcomes. Recent studies, including those using animal models, have shed light on a new disease concept: intracranial aneurysms as a chronic inflammatory disease. This process is triggered by abnormal hemodynamic forces and mediated by immune cells like macrophages and neutrophils. The initiation of intracranial aneurysms is a two-step process. First, high wall shear stress and mechanical stretch work together to promote macrophage infiltration into the arterial wal

BACKGROUND: Intracranial aneurysm (IA) is a debilitating cerebrovascular degeneration. Current clinical diagnosis relies mainly on conventional angiogram except for some peculiar aneurysms. Nonetheless, there is no documentation of aneurysm showing robust intracranial artifact on computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging.
CASE DESCRIPTION: Herein, we report a 45-year-old female with an IA showing a robust intracranial metal artifact. During surgery, the culprit lesion for the artifact was discovered to be hard plaque on the ventral part of the aneurysm. Craniotomy clipping and vessel

An unruptured anterior circulation, nongiant saccular cerebral aneurysm (located at the clinoid segment [C3] of the internal carotid artery [ICA] and growing into the carotid cave) was detected at a medical checkup and diagnosed from subsequent examinations. The aneurysm was observed and followed up with radiologic examinations. An examination performed 12 years after diagnosis revealed the disappearance of the aneurysm. This observation should be kept in mind, that it is possible for an unruptured aneurysm to undergo spontaneous thrombosis without any intervention.

Infectious intracranial aneurysm and cavernous sinus thrombosis are rare complications of orbital cellulitis. We report the case of a 46-year-old male presenting with sinusitis and orbital cellulitis complicated by the development of an orbital mass. Following orbitotomy with debulking, the patient underwent bony orbital decompression for increasing proptosis postoperatively. While his exam stabilized, the patient developed complete ptosis and extraocular motor palsy in the contralateral eye after undergoing bilateral sinus debridement. Imaging was notable for the presence of a pseudoaneurysm

Infundibular dilations (IDs) are funnel-shaped enlargements in the origin of intracranial arteries. Usually, IDs occur at the junction between posterior communicating artery (PcomA) and internal carotid artery (ICA). Progression from an ID of the PcomA to aneurysms has been described, but is unclear whether an ID is a preaneurysmal state or a normal anatomical variant. The authors describe a 55-year-old female patient presenting multiple intracranial aneurysms with a small one arising from an ID at the level of posterior communicating segment of ICA. To the best of our knowledge, after a crite

We report herein a case of a radiation-induced aneurysm. A 69-year-old woman presented with subarachnoid hemorrhage. Eight years previously, she had undergone cranial radiation therapy (total dose of 59.4 Gy) as adjuvant therapy after surgical resection for a chondrosarcoma that was destroying her sphenoid sinus. The patient underwent catheter angiography, which revealed an aneurysm of the anterior communicating artery and luminal narrowing and irregularity in the petrous and lacerum segments of the right internal carotid artery. We attempted surgical clipping of the aneurysm, but there was re

Internal carotid intracranial aneurysms are a relatively rare form of intracranial aneurysm that presents with diplopia, retro-orbital pain and unilateral headaches. The symptoms are progressive and the diagnosis should be considered in a patient presenting with these complaints. Underlying hypertension and advanced age are specific risk factors.

Until today, geometrical descriptors of intracranial aneurysms are largely used for diagnosis and treatment selection. Nevertheless, relatively little work has been devoted to automatize these measurements. In this work we propose a methodology for the automated isolation and quantification from vascular segmentation. The proposed methodology is based on skeleton topology analysis, geometrical analysis and deformable models to isolate, automatically, the aneurysm dome as well as its geometrical characteristics. The accuracy of this methodology when compared to manually isolated aneurysms is ev

Behçet's disease, a rare condition in central Europe but more common in Turkey where it was originally described, is characterized clinically by the presence of a diagnostic triad of oral and genital aphthous ulcers, meningitis, and relapsing iridocyclitis. Vascular lesions including arterial and venous occlusions, arterial aneurysms and varices are one of the common complications of Behçet's disease occur most commonly in the abdominal aorta, femoral arteries and pulmonary arteries. There have been only four reports of aneurysms of cerebral arteries in the literature. The authors describe a p

Three cases of moyamoya phenomenon associated with an aneurysm in the periphery of a lateral ventricle presenting with intracranial haemorrhage are reported. In case 1 the aneurysm was located in the right basal ganglia, and the patient improved under conservative management. The aneurysm had increased in size on the second angiogram, and disappeared on the third angiogram obtained nine months after the attack. In Case 2 the aneurysm was located in the peripheral portion of the left posterior cerebral artery, and was surgically excised. Pathological examination on surgical material revealed co
