INTRODUCTION: Dural sinus venous thrombosis in postpartum women is a well known complication, but intracranial venous lake thrombosis (IVLT) has not been previously described, nor its association with intracranial hypotension following epidural anesthesia (EDA). This study aims to describe and characterize a cohort of patients with IVLT with regards to imaging findings and symptoms.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study included patients from the picture and archiving communication system based on search strategies from referral text including: "headache + EDA", "complicated EDA", "

A 38-year-old woman with untreated Graves' disease was admitted to our hospital because of headache and diplopia for 3 months. A neuro-ophthalmic examination showed bilateral papilledema and abducens nerve paralysis. The cerebrospinal fluid pressure was extremely high. Brain magnetic resonance imaging showed cerebral venous thrombosis in the superior sagittal and right transverse and sigmoid sinuses. Laboratory investigations revealed elevated factor VIII and von Willebrand factor levels. The patient recovered after propylthiouracil and anticoagulation therapy. We herein report a rare case of

The non-parenchymal central nervous system's (CNS) involvement in Behcet's disease (BD) is considered rare. We herein report a case of BD complicated by intracranial hypertension (ICH) due to cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) in a 25-year-old Saudi male. Our patient presented with a four-week history of increasingly severe headache, nausea and diplopia, which were preceded by previous recurrent intermittent oral and genital ulcers, history suggestive of acneiform lesions and arthralgia over the past two years. Ophthalmic examination disclosed normal visual acuity (20/20) in both eyes with bilat

Cerebral vein thrombosis (CVT) is a rare complication of spontaneous intracranial hypotension (SIH). When to suspect a thrombotic disorder during the course of intracranial hypotension is not fully elucidated. A 48-year-old woman was admitted because of SIH with no signs of CVT on neuroimaging. The occurrence of diplopia and blurred vision 12 days later led to the performance of further investigations, which revealed thrombosis of the left lateral sinus, in the absence of variations in the headache characteristics. Among the other 4 cases of SIH clearly preceding the occurrence of CVT reported

Spontaneous intracranial hypotension (SIH) is caused by leakage of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) within the spinal column, and it is a rare risk factor for cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST), which is a life-threatening condition. We present a case of SIH with further developed CVST causing intracranial hypertension. Discussions were made on the mechanisms of SIH, leading to CVST and the presentations and treatment of SIH. Clinicians should keep in mind the coexistence of CVST and SIH. Patients with CVST should be closely observed for any change in the headache pattern such as orthostatic hea

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) is a rare condition but an important complication of spontaneous intracranial hypotension (SIH). We reviewed our experience of patients with SIH and assessed for the presence of CVST.
METHODS: We reviewed the medical records and imaging studies from our tertiary referral institution, assessing patients with clinically suspected SIH as well as imaging findings of intracranial hypotension. All relevant brain MRIs were reviewed for the presence of brain sag, pachymeningeal enhancement, and CVST.
RESULTS: Among 563 patients with a c

Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) related to intracranial tumors has most commonly been recognized as an operative complication related to local operative factors such as retraction or direct venous injury. CVST may also be caused by tumor-related factors such as local mass effect but rarely occurs geographically remote from the site of the tumor. We report 6 cases treated at our institution of intracranial supratentorial tumors associated with CVST. In each case, the CVST was remote from the surgical site. In 3 cases CVST was noted at the time of resection, and 3 cases occurred in a del

Unexplained SDH in infants and children is an accepted marker for AHT. It has been proposed that IVT may be the initiating event leading to the development of acute SDH, mimicking the appearance of traumatic SDH. Our study aims to investigate if nontraumatic IVT causes SDH in the pediatric population. We retrospectively identified 36 patients with IVT and reviewed neuroimaging studies for the concurrent presence of SDH. In our 36 patients with IVT, no associated SDH was observed. Even with extensive IVT, no SDH was present. Three false-positive diagnoses of IVT were identified in the setting o

BACKGROUND: Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) is not as well understood as an ischemic stroke of arterial origin. Although the prognosis of CVST is usually good, parenchymal lesions may occur in some patients, and the development of intracranial herniation may result in death. For this reason, recognizing the risk factors for intracranial herniation and accurately determining those patients who should undergo decompressive craniectomy is important.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to determine the risk factors for intracranial herniation in patients with CVST.
METHODS: A total of 177 patient

BACKGROUND: Optic neuritis is recognised by the international classification of headache disorders as a painful cranial nerve lesion. A lumbar puncture may be performed in the investigation of optic neuritis. Postdural puncture headache (PDPH) due to intracranial hypotension is a frequent complication of this procedure. In contrast, cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) is a rare but potentially fatal complication of dural puncture. A few studies have identified an association between iron deficiency anaemia and venous thrombosis. There are no reports linking CVT with lumbar puncture and iron defic

Developmental venous anomalies (DVAs) are the most commonly encountered cerebral malformations. While generally asymptomatic and discovered as incidental findings, there is a small number that can cause intracranial haemorrhage, usually attributed to associated cavernomas; however, venous thrombosis of the draining vein is a rare cause. A 10-year-old woman presented with seizure episodes. Angiographic evaluation revealed a collection of vessels draining into the superior sagittal sinus via the vein of Trolard, concerning for a DVA. The patient improved clinically with supportive care and antie

Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) requires anticoagulation to promote vessel recanalization. Current anticoagulation paradigms utilize plasma tests from peripheral venous/arterial samples for therapeutic monitoring. We describe a medically-refractory case of CVST in a 35-year-old woman later found to have JAK2 mutation and essential thrombocytosis. Despite therapeutic anticoagulation levels, worsening cerebral edema and progression to coma prompted endovascular treatment. Failed endovascular thrombectomy attempts led to placement of 2 separate indwelling microcatheters for continuous inf

BACKGROUND: As of 8 April 2021, a total of 2.9 million people have died with or from the coronavirus infection causing COVID-19 (Corona Virus Disease 2019). On 29 January 2021, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) approved a COVID-19 vaccine developed by Oxford University and AstraZeneca (AZD1222, ChAdOx1 nCoV-19, COVID-19 vaccine AstraZeneca, Vaxzevria, Covishield). While the vaccine prevents severe course of and death from COVID-19, the observation of pulmonary, abdominal, and intracranial venous thromboembolic events has raised concerns.
OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical manifestations an

Spontaneous intracranial hypotension (SIH) is an uncommon headache etiology, typically attributable to an unprovoked occult spinal CSF leak. Although frequently benign, serious complications may occur, including cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT). The objective of this study was to examine a highly complicated case of CVT attributable to SIH as a lens for understanding the heterogeneous literature on this rare complication, and to provide useful, evidence-based, preliminary clinical recommendations. A 43-year-old man presented with 1 week of headache, dizziness, and nausea, which precipitously e

BACKGROUND: Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) is a life-threatening condition that may present with symptoms and signs identical to idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH). Both conditions consist of increased intracranial pressure (ICP); however, IIH shows no evidence of contributory intracranial pathology. Oral hormonally based contraceptive usage has been associated with both conditions as well. Because disc edema often occurs in CVST, and IIH and is evident in other sight- and life-threatening conditions such as intracranial mass lesions, neuroimaging and other ancillary testing m

Headache with variable characteristics and associated signs and symptoms may occur in all forms of arteritis. Giant cell arteritis, one of the most common forms, involves branches of the external and, more rarely, of the internal carotid arteries. It occurs in patients over the age of 50 and is characterized by fever, new-onset headache, prominence and tenderness of the temporal artery, claudication of the masticatory muscles on chewing, amaurosis fugax, and visual loss. Headache is the initial symptom in 48% of patients and is present in 90%. Primary central nervous system angiitis is a rare

Several cases of hypothyroidism have been reported to develop idiopathic intracranial hypertension not directly precisely linked with cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVT). A 31-year-old Chinese woman presented with bilateral blurred vision and paroxysmal amaurosis for about 6 months without headache. Neurological examination revealed normal expect for the sixth cranial nerve palsy and bilateral papilledema. Laboratory tests showed pronounced hypothyroidism and greatly increased serum triglyceride. Cerebral spinal fluid showed the increased opening and closing pressure. Digital subtraction an
