Per and poly-fluoroalkyl substances and respiratory health in an Inuit community.

BACKGROUND: Concentrations of plasma per and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are elevated in the Inuit population of Nunavik and may be causing adverse health effects. Respiratory health outcomes have been associated with PFAS, but have not been explored in Inuit communities. The aim of the study was to examine the association between PFAS and respiratory health outcomes, and the moderating role of nutritional biomarkers. METHODS: We included up to 1298 participants of the Qanuilirpitaa? 2017 survey aged 16-80 years. Generalized regression models were used to estimate the associations betw

Ontogenetic and static allometry in the human face: contrasting Khoisan and Inuit.

OBJECTIVES: Regional differences in modern human facial features are present at birth, and ontogenetic allometry contributes to variation in adults. However, details regarding differential rates of growth and timing among regional groups are lacking. We explore ontogenetic and static allometry in a cross-sectional sample spanning Africa, Europe and North America, and evaluate tempo and mode in two regional groups with very different adult facial morphology, the Khoisan and Inuit. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Semilandmark geometric morphometric methods, multivariate statistics and growth simulations

Heart defects and other malformations in the Inuit in Canada: a baseline study.

OBJECTIVES: Birth defects occur in all ethnic groups, remaining an important world-wide cause of perinatal and infant morbidity. This contributes greatly to an excess of health care dollars allocated to the care and repair of those affected. This is especially true when those affected live in remote geographical locations. STUDY DESIGN: A chart review of 2567 live births of children of Inuit parents residing in Arctic Quebec (Nunavik) and on Baffin Island (Nunavut) between 1989 and 1994 (five years) was carried out compared to rates of anomalies of the Alberta Congenital Anomalies Surveillanc

Neurobehavioral performance of Inuit children with increased prenatal exposure to methylmercury.

Exposure to methylmercury from marine mammals and other seafood may affect the development of the central nervous system. In a traditional Inuit community in Qaanaaq, Greenland, mercury concentrations in cord blood and maternal hair have been examined in connection with all births. We examined 43 children at age 7-12 years with a battery of neurobehavioral tests. The average mercury concentration in hair was 5.0 microg/g and 1.5 microg/g in children and mothers, respectively. Clinical neurological examination did not reveal any obvious deficits. However, neuropsychological tests showed possibl

Oral health status of a group of elderly Canadian Inuit (Eskimo).

Fifty-four Inuit elders, representing 90% of the individuals 60 yr of age and older in three communities in the Keewatin region of the Canadian Northwest Territories, were examined for dental caries, periodontal disease, levels of edentulism, and the fit and quality of denture prostheses. These elders had a mean of 2.8 +/- 3.5 decayed teeth and a DMFT of 26 +/- 13 which reflected significant tooth loss. The Root Caries Index for subjects with gingival recession was 19%. Periodontal pocket assessments revealed that 86% of the individuals examined had CPITN readings of either 3 or 4. Over one th

Prenatal exposure to methyl mercury among Greenlandic polar Inuits.

During the period 1982 to 1988, 37 paired samples of blood from Inuit women and their newborn children were collected in North Greenland. The samples were analyzed for whole blood content of total mercury (tot-Hg) and for content of methyl mercury (Me-Hg). In maternal blood, 80% of the tot-Hg was found to be methylated in contrast to 98% in cord blood. Concentrations of Me-Hg in maternal and cord blood were significantly correlated, and the mean ratio between fetal and maternal blood Me-Hg was 1.9. Concentrations of Me-Hg in cord blood were closely related to the marine food intake of the moth

Invisibility, hypervisibility, relational visibility, and collective adaptation: inuit experiences of disability.

Disability is increasingly understood as a socially and culturally situated experience shaped by relationships, environments, and systems of recognition. However, limited research has examined how disability is perceived and experienced within Inuit communities. This paper draws on a secondary qualitative analysis of interviews with 126 Nunavummiut across 12 communities in Nunavut, conducted as part of a community-led study by Nunavummi Disabilities Makinnasuaqtiit Society. Guided by Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit and the Piliriqatigiinniq Research Model, the analysis explores how disability becomes

Toxoplasma gondii: How an Amazonian parasite became an Inuit health issue.

Toxoplasma gondii is a protozoan parasite that originated in the Amazon. Felids (mammals in the cat family) are the only definitive hosts. These animals shed large numbers of infectious oocysts into the environment, which can subsequently infect many intermediate hosts, including birds, mammals and, possibly, fish. Human T. gondii seroprevalence is high in some parts of the Canadian Arctic and is associated with adverse health consequences among Inuit population. Since the range of felids does not extend to the Arctic, it is not immediately obvious how this parasite got from the Amazon to the

Association of blood polychlorinated biphenyls and cholesterol levels among Canadian Inuit.

BACKGROUND: It has generally been thought that Inuit populations have low risk of cardiovascular disease due to high consumption of omega-3 fatty acids found in traditional marine-based diets. However, results of recent surveys showed that Inuit populations are experiencing increasing rates of cardiovascular disease and related risk factors. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate if blood polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are associated with high cholesterol and related parameters in Canadian Inuit, known risk factors for cardiovascular disease. METHODS: The Adult Inuit Healt

Attempted suicide among Inuit youth: psychosocial correlates and implications for prevention.

OBJECTIVE: To identify potential risk and protective factors associated with attempted suicide among Inuit youth, a population known to have a high rate of both attempted and completed suicide in recent years. METHOD: A secondary analysis of data on 203 Inuit youth (aged 15 to 24 years) from a random community survey conducted by Santé Québec in 1992. Factors previously identified in the literature and in clinical consultation and ethnographic research were tested with bivariate statistics and logistic regression models for each gender. RESULTS: At the bivariate level, positive correlates in

Thyroid function and plasma concentrations of polyhalogenated compounds in Inuit adults.

BACKGROUND: Several ubiquitous polyhalogenated compounds (PHCs) have been shown to alter thyroid function in animal and in vitro studies. So far, epidemiologic studies have focused on the potential effect of a small number of them, namely, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and some organochlorines (OCs), without paying attention to other important PHCs. OBJECTIVES: We investigated the relationship between exposure to several PHCs and thyroid hormone homeostasis in Inuit adults from Nunavik. METHODS: We measured thyroid parameters [thyroid-stimulating-hormone (TSH), free thyroxine (fT(4)), tot

Common genomic variation in LMNA modulates indexes of obesity in Inuit.

We discovered that rare mutations in LMNA, which encodes lamins A and C, underlie autosomal dominant Dunnigan-type familial partial lipodystrophy. Because familial partial lipodystrophy is an extreme example of genetically disturbed adipocyte differentiation, it is possible that common variation in LMNA is associated with obesity-related phenotypes. We subsequently discovered a common single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in LMNA, namely 1908C/T, which was associated with obesity-related traits in Canadian Oji-Cree. We now report association of this LMNA SNP with anthropometric indexes in 186 n

Glaucoma in East Greenlandic Inuit--a population survey in Ittoqqortoormiit (Scoresbysund).

PURPOSE: To determine the prevalence of primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG) in an isolated Greenlandic Inuit community and to examine the anatomical risk factors for this disease. METHODS: All individuals aged > or =40 years were examined. Visual acuity, refractive error, anterior chamber depth (ACD), intraocular pressure (IOP), gonioscopy, and optic disc characteristics were recorded. RESULTS: Seventy-nine individuals (65% response rate) were examined. Mean IOP was 12.0 mmHg. ACD was shallow and decreased with age and hypermetropia. ACD was deeper than observed in the same community in 19

Structural neuroimaging of the planning network in Inuit adolescents prenatally exposed to lead.

Exposure to lead has been linked to alterations in cortical organization and impaired executive function. However, neural correlates of the association between lead exposure and cognitive planning remain poorly characterized. This study investigated whether brain structures mediate the association between prenatal lead exposure and planning performance in late adolescence. Seventy-two Inuit participants (mean age = 18.4 years, range = 16.25-21.55 years) from Nunavik, Canada, completed the Tower of London planning task as well as a T1-weighted brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan to meas

History of dental caries in Inuit populations: genetic implications and 'distance effect'.

Dental caries is considered the third most important scourge in the world. In North America, Inuit populations are the population the most severely affected by dental caries. It is often assumed that this situation can be explained by a combination of factors classical for Indigenous populations: remoteness (geographical distance), low economic status and low health literacy (cultural distance). Using a bibliographic approach, we tested this hypothesis of the "distance effect" by exploring the caries prevalence in other Indigenous populations living in high-income countries. Next, we tested wh

A novel COMP mutation in an Inuit patient with pseudoachondroplasia and severe short stature.

Pseudoachondroplasia (PSACH) is an autosomal dominant skeletal dysplasia, generally identified clinically at two years of age due to decreased linear growth and a waddling gait. Radiographic features include small and irregular epiphyses, with metaphyseal changes of the long bones and characteristic vertebral changes. Mutations in the COMP gene cause PSACH and some cases of multiple epiphyseal dysplasia. Mutations generally cluster in the calmodulin-like repeat regions of the gene. Mutations in exon 13 (encoding the seventh calmodulin-like repeat) have been associated with severe short stature

Allergen sensitization and allergen exposure in Greenlander Inuit residing in Denmark and Greenland.

The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of allergic sensitization and possible risk factors in a genetically homogenous Inuit population living under widely differing climatic and cultural conditions. A written questionnaire and skin prick test for 10 aeroallergens were obtained from 1119 adult Greenlanders residing in Denmark, Nuuk (main city in Southern Greenland) and Uummannaq (rural settlement in Northern Greenland). Allergen exposure was assessed by pollen counts, questions on pet keeping and counts of house dust mites in dust samples. The overall prevalence of at least one p
