[Migraine and irritable bowel syndrome].

The association between migraine and functional gastrointestinal disorders has been confirmed by many clinical observations and epidemiological studies. In most patients during the attacks of migraine, apart from various neurological and vascular symptoms, gastrointestinal disturbances occur including nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain or diarrhea. Functional gastrointestinal disorders, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), are reported in migraine patients in periods between the attacks as well. On the other hand 23-53% of IBS patients have frequent headaches. Migraine and IBS often coexist w

Treatment of Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is an extremely common cause of consultation, and at present is diagnosed on the basis of symptoms and a few simple exclusion tests. Exclusion diets can be successful, but many patients have already attempted and failed such treatments before consulting. Anxiety and somatization may be an important driver of consultation. Patients' concerns should be understood and addressed. Those with prominent psychiatric disease may benefit from psychotherapy. Hypnotherapy benefits symptoms in those without psychologic disturbance, but its availability is limited. Antidepress

Alosetron and irritable bowel syndrome.

Alosetron (Lotronex, GlaxoSmithKline) is a potent and selective 5-HT(3)-receptor antagonist approved by the FDA for the treatment of women with diarrhoea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) in whom conventional therapy has failed. Studies involving healthy volunteers and IBS patients have demonstrated a beneficial effect of treatment with alosetron on global IBS symptoms, abdominal pain and discomfort, altered bowel function as well as improvement of quality of life (QOL). Data from animals studies suggest the involvement of 5-HT(3) receptors on intrinsic primary afferent neurons in the

Diagnosis of irritable bowel syndrome.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is the most common disorder seen in gastroenterology practice. It is also a large component of primary care practices. Although the classic IBS symptoms of lower abdominal pain, bloating, and alteration of bowel habits is easily recognizable to most physicians, diagnosing IBS remains a challenge. This is in part caused by the absence of anatomic or physiologic markers. For this reason, the diagnosis of IBS currently needs to be made on clinical grounds. A number of symptom-based diagnostic criteria have been proposed over the last 15 years. The most recent of the

Dysbiosis in Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

The human gut microbiota fosters the development of a dynamic group of microorganisms impacted by diverse variables that include genetics, diet, infection, stress, ingested drugs, such as antibiotics and small intestine bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) as well as the gut microbiota itself. These factors may influence the change in microbial composition, which results in dysbiosis (microbial imbalance) and exposes the gut to pathogenic insults. Dysbiosis is incidental to the etiology of inflammatory diseases such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and metabolic diseases, including type 2 diabetes and

Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Resilience.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a disorder of the gut-brain interaction (DGBI), characterized, mainly in severe cases, by altered psychological stress reactivity, psychological disorders, and dysfunction of the brain-gut-microbiota axis. Prior studies have highlighted significant physical and emotional impairments in the health-related quality of life of patients with IBS. Resilience is a psychosocial ability that reduces negative emotions while enhancing adaptation to adversities. Resilience is essential for health promotion and stress response. The present study aimed to carry out a review

Pathophysiology of irritable bowel syndrome.

Traditionally, irritable bowel syndrome has been considered to be a disorder with no known underlying structural or biochemical explanation, but this concept is likely to be outdated. In this Review we challenge the widely accepted view that irritable bowel syndrome is an unexplained brain-gut disorder. There is epidemiological evidence that, in a major subset of patients, gastrointestinal symptoms arise first and only later do incident mood disorders occur. Additionally, possible mechanisms for gut-brain dysfunction have been identified, suggesting primary gut disturbances might be the underl

[Management of irritable bowel syndrome].

Management of patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is based on the positive diagnosis of the symptom complex, limited exclusion of underlying organic disease and institution of a therapeutic trial. As a general approach, physician should establish an effective therapeutic relationship by providing clearly understood explanation to patients of the causes and implications of their symptoms, supported by reassurance and appropriate therapy. Treatment of IBS needs to be individualized, focusing on patients' predominant symptoms. In diarrhea- predominant IBS, loperamide and some antispasmod

Management of irritable bowel syndrome.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is one of the most common functional gastrointestinal disorders. The prevalence rate is 10-20% and women have a higher prevalence. IBS adversely affects quality of life and is associated with health care use and costs. IBS comprises a group of functional bowel disorders in which abdominal discomfort or pain is associated with defecation or a change in bowel habit, and with features of disordered defecation. The consensus definition and criteria for IBS have been formalized in the "Rome II criteria". Food, psychiatric disorders, and gastroenteritis are risk factor

Neuropathophysiology of irritable bowel syndrome.

Widespread symptoms associated with the irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) are abnormal defecation and abdominal pain, both of which can be exacerbated by psychogenic stress. Disordered defecation may present as diarrhea or constipation. A subgroup of IBS patients alternate from one to the other over time. Urgency to stool often accompanies the diarrheal-state, and patients with the constipation-predominant form of IBS report straining and the feeling of incomplete evacuation. Basic scientific research aims for improved understanding of the physiology and pathophysiology of the digestive systems f

[Irritable bowel syndrome in children].

The irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is characterized by alteration in bowel habits (i.e., constipation and/or diarrhea) and abdominal pain, and is most common gastrointestinal disorder in adults. The recurrent abdominal pain (RAP) in children is similar to IBS in adults except bowel habits, but there is no settled conception of IBS in children. In our department, diagnosis of pediatric IBS will be made if the child has; #1 functional gastrointestinal disorders without organic diseases, #2 abdominal pain and other gastrointestinal symptoms continuing more than 3 weeks, #3 psychogenic background

[Irritable bowel syndrome in children].

In the adult, the irritable bowel syndrome is characterized by intestinal transit disorders associated or not with chronic abdominal pain. Two different forms can be seen: in one, pain and constipation are predominant, while in the other, pain and diarrhea alternate. The second form is encountered with predilection in the child. Various terms can be used to name the syndrome including colitis, non specific or benign colitis, irritable bowel syndrome in the child, infantile diarrhea, and others, all of which attests to our ignorance of the pathophysiology of this disorder. This syndrome is by f

Symptoms in irritable bowel syndrome.

In a consecutive study of 101 patients with IBS and at least one year of complaints, the presence of somatic and mental symptoms were measured. By definition all patients had abdominal pain and/or disturbed bowel function in the absence of organic disease. The most prominent symptom of indigestion was abdominal distension. Many patients also had complaints of food intolerance and avoided bulk forming agents such as fruits and vegetables. Symptoms associated with the upper gastrointestinal tract such as burning sensations in the epigastrium nausea and acid regurgitation were seen in a majority

Healthcare Costs of Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Irritable Bowel Syndrome Subtypes in the United States.

INTRODUCTION: Contemporaneous data on healthcare costs of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) in the United States are lacking. We aimed to estimate all-cause and IBS-specific costs in patients with and without IBS and to compare costs across IBS subtypes. METHODS: Using Optum's deidentified Clinformatics Data Mart Database, we performed a retrospective cohort analysis of patients with and without IBS using data spanning 2016-2021. Patients with IBS were identified by ICD-10 codes. Controls were randomly selected from Clinformatics Data Mart Database participants. Primary outcomes were total all-c

Belgian consensus on irritable bowel syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is characterised by recurrent abdominal pain related to defaecation or associated with altered stool frequency or consistency. Despite its prevalence, major uncertainties in the diagnostic and therapeutic management persist in clinical practice. METHODS: A Delphi consensus was conducted by 20 experts from Belgium, and consisted of literature review and voting process on 78 statements. Grading of recommendations, assessment, development and evaluation criteria were applied to evaluate the quality of evidence. Consensus was defined as > 80 % agreement.

Nursing management of irritable bowel syndrome.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is an umbrella term for a common range of symptoms such as abdominal pain, distension (bloating), diarrhoea and constipation. Nurses will often encounter patients with IBS in their day-to-day practice. As well as patients who present to healthcare services seeking assistance in managing their IBS, nurses may also encounter patients who were initially seeking assistance for other conditions, but were also found to be exhibiting symptoms of IBS. This article outlines the causes of IBS and the range of symptoms that people with IBS may experience. It details the pha
